Jazz rookie Grayson Allen didn’t make his debut as he received a DNP-Coach’s decision and veteran Thabo Sefolosha missed his first of five games while serving his suspension for violating the league’s drug policy, but that didn’t matter.

Looks like we might see him with the Stars after all. Went mostly with 8 guys. Not sure Thabo or Neto changes that. Got to be looking to showcase Burks to trade him? No other explaination. Niang with his first quality minutes with the Jazz. O'Neale very limited minutes is surprising. The 5 game win streak early last year was the only time Rubio was around 20 minutes. Hood was also out. They don't win last night if he plays Rubio his usual 30. He was awful. And no Hood!

With the Jazz roster so deep, Allen didn’t enter his first game with any expectations. Snyder is challenging him to improve defensively and the 21st overall pick isn’t pouting.

Needs to work on his whole game from what I've seen. He can shoot

The bench looks like it will be as effective as we thought. Keeping Exum was a solid move.

This game showed how important Ricky and Donovan are.
Rudy, Derrick, Joe, Dante, Alec, and Jae all played well, but with our starting backcourt struggling, we barely managed to beat the kings

Posted by cchappell18 on Oct 18, 2018 | 8:45 AM

It showed once again that Ricky is at best a back-up. Was good to see COTY bench him and my hope of this being his last year as the starter for the Jazz as realistic.

Exum is a better fit for the team than Bricky and will be a better player this year.

Favs is an awesome backup center and a marginal stretch four with Gobert.

Rudy is going to score loads of points this year and be an Allstar.

Ingles and Favs play great together. I think Ingles will be even better this year which is hard to believe at 31.

Exum and Burks play great together. The prettiest basketball is when those two are on the floor together.

Utah’s 81 points in the first half broke the franchise record of 80 points set in December of 1989 against the Warriors. The Jazz also tied an all-time Warriors opponent record for points in a second quarter with 47 and nailed 10 treys, which were the most threes in any quarter in franchise history and one shy of the NBA record, but still fell to 1-1 on the young season after the Warriors’ strong finish. “This is one of the best defensive teams in the league and they’ve got a lot better offensively,” Kerr said. “They put you through a lot of motion, a lot of actions, they’ve got a lot of weapons, they come in with a really deep bench and Mitchell gives them something they haven’t had with playmaking.” – via Deseret News

Wikipedia lists some of those guys on the roster. Drafting Reed makes even less sense with Stone on the roster. Also Dixon-Tatum. I guess Reed can play some PF? They did play two of their centers together at times last year but much of the league doesn't even play with one center. Burton was good. Be interesting to see if he makes the rotation with the new guys in the mix. Would be 15 guys on the roster going into camp plus Bradley and Allen not to mention the injured Haas.

The Utah Jazz fell to the Golden State Warriors on Friday night in heartbreaking fashion as a last second tip-in sunk the Jazz after leading for most of the game. The loss moved the Jazz to 1-1 on the young season, but they also established themselves as a legitimate threat to the Golden State Warriors moving forward. As such, it will be exhilarating to see how they bounce back and respond from here.

Over the summer, the Darius Bazley hype train was running strong, but with him altering course on going to the G-League from high school (his fit was questionable, anyway), a legit NBA-level talent who can help the Jazz if the need arises is probably better than developing a player who will ultimately belong to someone else.

See what happens with Mr. Platoon and Raul. Would love to see a line-up of Gobert/Mitchell/Ingles/Niang/Allen. Imagine 2 shooters on the floor at one time opening everything else up. What a concept!

Q should consider the following:
DM: I would pull him to the side and tell him to stop shooting 3s every chance he gets. I would also hire Deron or Stockton part time and mentor him how to be a PG/ floor general . I recall Stockton was hired to help Deron when he was a rookie. I do not know if fame got to his head and spent more time BBQ this summer than practicing. I hope this is just a slump. Not worried yet, but Q has to asset himself.

Rubio: I would hire a shooting coach. He needs some arc on this shots. Ideally should be 45 degrees. But this guy chugs them at 15-25 degrees. I like his defense and playmaking. No issues there.

Exum: he is not providing any evidence that he is PG material, period. He can’t assist nor has not shown the ability to be a floor general and has been out of control (same as last year). However, he can play off the ball and defends well. I guess playing time may solve most of the issues as he is still young.

Posted by statpower on Oct 23, 2018 | 12:01 AM

Snyder is the one wanting them to shoot 3's

Rubio is nothing but issues. A shooting coach isn't going to help.

Exum hasn't ever shown much of anything. He keeps getting paid though

It seemed like Rubio had better arch on his shots when he was humming last year. I agree his shot is super flat right now.
I was trying to come with a "his shot is as flat as a" but it all ended up being inappropriate.

One of the things I see with Donovan is once he starts going to the basket he is not passing out. I am certain the scouting report says that, so you see him driving on four opposing players sometimes. He needs to learn from Harden to keep his head up, and either draw the foul or kick out. I suspect he will learn that skill but he sure is having a bad start this year.

I find that Exum plays better with certain players where there is more ball movement and pace. Very different from Rubio. Contrary to common opinion on here I believe that Exum can be a very good PG. I posted his assist and turnover numbers from last year on a different post and they were better than Rubio’s. He was definitely out of control this game and was trying to do far too much. That seems to be a problem so far this year with Burks, Exum, Rubio, and Donovan.

Posted by TheRealDennisLindsey on Oct 23, 2018 | 1:00 AM

The problem is the defense surround the 3 guys that don't suck. Give Mitchell, Gobert and Ingles some spacing and watch out!

I Think Exum Has a Role
Exum probably wont ever be a point guard but as a shooting guard or small forward I think he can contribute. His defense is good and he is a very good driver. His shooting can use some work but if he can get that down I do think he could be a starting 2 or 3 in this league, or at least a solid 6th man.

Posted by ArcticSlicer on Oct 23, 2018 | 12:17 AM

The non shooting shooting guard! He is a defensive specialist not a 33 million dollar rotation player. If he could hit shots he could be a 3 and d. Big if! :rant

What Do You Propose?
Exum, Burks, and O’Neale didn’t really look any better tonight and I can’t see much reason to start any of them over Mitchell or Rubio at this point because statistically speaking Rubio and Mitchel are our best guards.

Start Allen at the 1 and Crowder at the 2? Sure if we went by tonight’s game only that might make sense as they were about the only bright spots tonight.

On a more serious note, Crowder looks like he could be a strong contender for SMoY.

Posted by ArcticSlicer on Oct 23, 2018 | 12:34 AM

I suggest Rubio/Favors are benched and ideally traded. I'd start Thabo at the 4. Niang gets back-up minutes at the 4. Udoh or Bradley at the back up 5. Jae behind Ingles at the 3. Allen or Neto alongside Mitchell. Burks back-up at the 2. O'Neale eventually could be in the mix as well

The only two players in this game who somehow managed to have a positive +/- were Joe Ingles and Grayson Allen. Grayson Allen was inserted into the lineup as Quin Snyder dug deep into the depth chart to find someone—anyone—who had a pulse and could make a shot. Allen scored 7 points in 10 minutes on 100% shooting. Unfortunately, outside of Jae Crowder, the bench just didn’t have it tonight. They were woefully below average against a Memphis Grizzlies bench that could be mistaken for a G-League bench on some nights.

I'd take Mack over Rubio or Exum. Selden can shoot, score and pass the ball. Brooks had a nice rookie year, Anderson fills the box score, Casspi is another shooter. If this is G-league level what is Exum and O'Neale who has sucked thus far? :facepalm

Utah’s starting lineup is in some serious trouble. Last year, they had a Net Rating of +12.4. So far through the Jazz’s first three games, it’s not pretty. They have a Net Rating of -36.7 with an offensive rating of 73.3 and a defensive rating of 110.0. It’s Utah’s most played lineup at 29 minutes. This isn’t exactly against the league’s cream of the crop either. Other than Golden State, Utah has faced two lottery teams from last season. The Grizzlies and Kings are improved, but these are the games you gotta take care of.

But Rubio and Favors are great and making over 30 million between them! :lol

Rudy Gobert for the season has a defensive rating of 109.5 when he’s on the court. It took Rudy sometime last year to get going. It wasn’t until he returned from injury in January that he really got into a groove. The Jazz are running at a much higher pace with Rudy on the floor. This year they’re averaging 105.39 possessions vs 98.71 last year. That’s a steep increase. Could this increased pace be affecting the Jazz’s defense? It remains to be seen. But right now, Rudy isn’t Rudy.

Looks like Rudy to me. Needs help.

The Utah Jazz were getting good shots, but just not hitting any of them. Gasol shut down everything from inside which forced Utah to take a lot of contested threes. Rubio’s trick two pointer from the free throw line was there all night, but he didn’t have it. You have to hand it to the Grizzlies, they played amazing defense and deserved this win. The Jazz allowed the Grizzlies to play their game on Utah’s home court, not a good look.

and Ricky sucks!

Ricky Rubio is having a rough start to the season. In his first three games he’s shooting 25% from the field, 33.3% from three, and has the lowest usage rate of his career. He has an average Net Rating of -10.3. That could be partly because he’s with that starting lineup, but we saw last season that he was the catalyst that makes the starting lineup work. If he’s off, that lineup can’t create the spacing to work.

and yet that starting line-up was horrible without Rudy

Donovan Mitchell has had flashes where he looks like his Donovan Mitchell self. Right now, we haven’t seen that Donovan Mitchell game yet. It took him about a month to get going last year, too. If Utah wants to surge up the standings this year, they can’t wait a month. They need the Spida they know and love. One would think that a Donovan Mitchell explosion is just on the horizon. He’s due.

Going to be tough without spacing

If Utah can somehow put together both pieces, this defense with their high octane offense we saw against Golden State and Sacramento, then they will be just fine. But the degree of difficulty is going to increase in the next four games as they go on the road to play the Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, and Minnesota Timberwolves.

But why would anyone think they can be a high octane offense?

Some of this can be attributed to defenses focusing on him more but is a 10% falloff completely attributed to a little bit of extra defensive attention? There is more to the story and the Jazz need to figure it out. To combat Mitchell, the Memphis Grizzlies packed the paint with both of their bigs which took away his shots inside. Can the Jazz figure out a way to get more space for Mitchell to work inside?

The Jazz's Future Hinges on Donovan Mitchell's Transformation

It hinges on putting the right players around their big 3. Have serious doubts about the front office/coach doing that

Of course, as everyone knows now, what actually happened last season was even crazier. First, the Jazz followed that early success by losing 18 of 25 games from December 1st to January 22th. That was the reality check, and the regression that most people worried about during those first few weeks. Sitting 9 games under .500 in mid-January, it looked like Utah would have the 10th place season that everyone had expected all along.

What early success? They had a 5 game win streak against crappy teams with Hood out and Rubio only playing 20 minutes a game. Other than that they sucked.

From there, the team finished the year winning 29 of their final 35 games. Utah finished at 48-34 and landed at fifth in place in a loaded Western Conference. Rudy Gobert won Defensive Player of the Year. Quin Snyder probably should've won Coach of the Year. Mitchell nearly stole Rookie of the Year from Ben Simmons. In the first round of the playoffs, the rookie went head-to-head with Russell Westbrook and outplayed him over the course of five games. The Jazz advanced, and while they lost decisively to the Rockets in the West semis, the future looked brighter than it ever had with Hayward. Utah entered this season with a real chance to be one of the best teams in the entire league.

Snyder playing Hood and Rubio while platooning two guys that didn't suck was the main reason other than Gobert being hurt that the Jazz sucked. COTY?

Wednesday in Houston, he did. Mitchell had 20 points in the first half, and then he opened the second half turning the Rockets inside. There was a spin move that turned into a pinpoint cross-court pass for an Ingles three; then there was him winding his way around James Harden and then splitting Clint Capela and Carmelo Anthony for an up-and-under lay-up. On successive possessions in the third he sought out Carmelo in switches and got whatever he wanted. Later, when the Rockets fought their way back into the game and made it a six-point margin, Mitchell squared up over P.J. Tucker for a three to kill any comeback momentum. In a game that included James Harden, Mitchell was the best player on the floor. That was the other Jazz-Rockets takeaway that mattered.

Gobert's defensive rating might make an argument for who was the best player

As the Utah story accelerates and dreams get bigger now, it's still all about Mitchell. The Jazz want to go from good to great, and that will only happen if Mitchell can make the same transformation. Players like Joe Ingles and Jae Crowder and Derrick Favors are perfect complements, but they can't be the centerpiece. The same is true for Gobert, an All-NBA defensive talent whose offense becomes only marginally useful down the stretch. Gobert is great at keeping this team decent regardless of who's out there with him, but he's not the player who will make them elite.

Favors is hardly the perfect compliment and Rudy is the centerpiece no matter how people want to spin it otherwise

-The Jazz, of course, had good reason to make continuity a priority after going 29-6 over their last 35 games of the regular season and beating the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs after starting the year just 19-28. Could they have even more success this season with the band back together?-

No reason other than to get better

-Did Rubio turn a corner as a shooter? Could he carry over whatever worked for him down the stretch into this season? Many have assumed the answer to those questions is a rather emphatic “yes.”-

Why would they think that? He's sucked his whole career. Sucked in the playoffs. His form is horrendous

-But through Utah’s first four games of this season, Rubio has largely struggled from the field. He made five of his 12 shot attempts against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 19 but otherwise is just 2 of 16 from the field (12.5 percent). He’s 1-of-7 from beyond the arc and 1 of 9 from two-point territory. Many of the shots he’s missed have been good looks within the flow of the game that he made at the end of last year and needs to make in order for the Jazz’s offense to succeed.-

He is wide open for a reason. They aren't good looks if he is the one shooting

-“I know the shots will come,” he said before the game against the Warriors. “This team trusts me and Coach trusts me, so I know my game is going to come. It was all summer without playing a professional game for the first time in eight years. Preseason is good, but at the end of the day, when it comes to an NBA game, there’s nothing to replicate that.”-

Excuses.

The Utah Jazz had a very strong outing in their win Saturday night against the New Orleans Pelicans. Ricky Rubio and Rudy Gobert came up big for the team. I expect that they will continue to produce consistently for Coach Snyder. Today (Sunday) at 5 pm MST the Jazz will be in Dallas to take on the Mavericks.

Odds aren't good on Ricky being consistent unless you're talking of him consistently playing behind his man, throwing crazy passes, throwing up bricks and flopping.

A few hours before the game, Derrick Favors was ruled out due to a left knee injury. In his place came Jae Crowder. Most injuries to a team’s starting player may make a matchup for favorable for the opposition, unfortunately, for Dallas, that’s not the case for Utah. The Rubio, Mitchell, Ingles, Crowder, and Gobert lineup is Utah’s best lineup. Starting in place for Favors, Jae allowed Gobert to feast inside. Crowder finished with 15 points.

The best line-up but doesn't start. :confusedshrug:

This win may have come with a big cost, however, as Jae Crowder sprained his ankle as Harrison Barnes undercut him on three with 1 minute remaining in the game. Luckily for Utah, the ankle sprain looked a lot worse than it was as x-rays came up negative and Jae is now day to day with a grade 1 ankle sprain.

Good news. Might have to play the pot smoker?

On top of those numbers, Rudy is putting up a stat line of 13.5 rebounds per game, 1.5 steals per game, and 2.7 blocks per game. To put it shortly, Rudy “eats freaking with humans”. Rudy has my vote for all-star this season.

They will get two all-stars since this is Mitchell's team? :lol

Grayson Allen made an appearance tonight and had some key plays in the third quarter to help stifle one of Dallas’ runs. Every time Grayson shoots it looks like it is going in. That is a very good sign for his future with this team, and when his defense has improved enough to gain coach Quin Snyder’s approval, the league better watch out. We’ve got another sharpshooter in the making.

He went to Duke. He'll play regardless

We all got a scare when Exum went down after being tied up mid-air in a play that probably should have been counted as some sort of flagrant foul. Luckily he got right up and brushed the fall off. Exum has had good games and not so good games, but overall is looking fantastic. He is learning how to use his speed and athleticism to create plays for himself and his teammates. Dante is really starting to look like he’s gaining a feel for the game. That is one thing that injuries prevented him from doing over the past few years. Dante’s defense is always fantastic. He sticks to his man like glue, and is great at contesting with his long arms. I would like to see him get a few more blocks, as he is only averaging 0.3 per game. With his size advantage over other guards, I hope he is able to convert a few more of his contested shots into blocked shots.

He mostly sucks. Not sure how anyone could watch and think otherwise. Neto is better than him and Rubio who again sucked as well. They will never go anywhere with those guys and Favors

Moving on down the line, Donovan is officially here. Mitchell along with Ricky Rubio have been on an almost parallel path to start the season. Both had a slow first few games, due to an issue of forcing up difficult shots rather than taking what would come to them. Both have figured out this issue in unison. While Ricky may not have scored many points this game, he had 8 assists with only 1 turnover, and hit the shots that mattered. Donovan had a middling night, scoring relatively well, but turning the ball over 5 times to his 4 assists. Although both Donovan and Ricky have things figured out, there will still be the ups and downs of a regular season. Hopefully, they continue to bounce back just as quickly in the future.

Ricky has figured it out? :wtf:

Someone please make a Knights of Niang meme. Dude is legit. Didn’t see that coming.

Exum is not better than Rubio but he’s better than many on this board will acknowledge. That dunk shoulda been an and-1. If he makes those layups . . .

Mitchell with 20, ho hum

And I have to credit Deandre. Not for the 19 reb or 9 ast (waat?) but for the 4/4 ft. He is now 26/30 on the year. Props to him for putting in the work. Hackajordan is finally dead.

Posted by Jazzbeetle on Oct 28, 2018 | 9:16 PM

Anyone that saw the Stars isn't suprised with Niang. He's the most skilled player on the team. Only question I had was defense and he seems to making plays at that end as well

Of course
But I also want us to be at our best and contend for a championship. I believe we have the players to do that.

Posted by Capnchuck on Oct 28, 2018 | 10:05 PM

People will always doubt him and Chuck will always be there to defend him. Cause and effect around here lol
I’m in the exum camp so I sympathize with Capn (within reason) when it comes to exum.

Everyone deep down knows exum is the key to our hearts and dreams. They are just slow to accept it. Let that magical unicorn horn dust wash over you as he blows by his defender for an easy layup. Dmx is here and it’s for real

Posted by JazzHands2017 on Oct 28, 2018 | 11:06 PM

People won't doubt him if he proves himself. I've given him credit the couple games he hasn't sucked.

The day Exum relegates Rubio to the bench
Will be a great day for the jazz, because it will mean Exum has improved a lot.

I don’t think that day has arrived yet. And when it comes I hope it’s because Exum improved, not because of a decline of Rubio

Posted by emirvisir on Oct 29, 2018 | 1:56 AM

More likely it will the Jazz not wanting to pay Rubio

He’s got some hops. If this team finishes top 3 or 4 in the West I think you have to consider him as an mvp candidate. If we are 1 or 2 he may even get it. I think he can average between 15-20 per night. The defense will stabilize eventually and be very good again. His impact to our team is nearly unmatched. You have to go find LeBron or AD if you want to compare.

Does anyone here think he’s reached his potential? I don’t. That’s scary. He’s still so young and has so much time left to get better and better. He will add a shot and or better post moves inthe next two seasons. He will get even better at what he’s already elite at. His body can keep getting better.

This team could hold it down for like 5 to 6 more years. With Lindsey managing maybe even see another 20 year playoff run again lol

We all know Quin Snyder is an amazing coach. Easily one of the top 5 coaches in the NBA. We are lucky to have him in Utah. Andy Larsen, wrote an article in the Trib, about Quin. Recognizing that Video coordinators is a popular path for future NBA coaches. Eric Spolstra. David Fizdale, James Borrego, Mike Budenholzer, Mike Malone and Steve Clifford all spent time as video coordinators.

And yet one of their best players is sitting on the bench. Soon to be 3 of their best players.

To read more about Snyder’s DAV program, check out Andy’s article.

Just remember you have top to pay now!

Usually, whenever there is talk about Rudy it is about defense and naive fans will talk about what a liability he is on the offensive end because of his lack of three point ability. Rudy’s ability to roll, spaces the floor. It gets easy buckets for him and his teammates. The added focus on lobs to Rudy makes the game so much fun and despite looking easy, other teams haven’t been able to stop them.

One of the top rated offensive players the past couple of years. Imainge if they ever put shooters around him. They had Ingles, Niand and Allen all in together last night but I think Ricky was still out there :facepalm :facepalm

Could both of these guys make the all star team this year? Who has the better chance of making the team, Rudy or Donovan?

If Mitchell can play like he did the past couple of games yes. Gobert for sure. Should gave made it over Hatward

Nothing too crazy, but relevant nonetheless. I’m not going to lie, it was pretty weird to have such early basketball this year. Awesome, but weird. I love the changes the NBA has made to the schedule to remove some back to backs, 4 in 5’s, and 5 in 7’s. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if they trimmed the season down some entirely, but maybe I’m crazy.

Definitely too long. Too much money involved tp shorten it though

These two were basically the end of the bench coming into the season. Niang particularly has forced his way into the rotation and I think the Jazz may have found themselves the next Joe Ingles/Royce O’Neale. I’m amazed at Dennis Lindsey’s ability to find diamonds in the rough. And I’m equally amazed at Quin Snyder’s coaching staff for the development of players that come through this system.

You knew Allen would play. Better than Hood and from Duke

One of the top players in the G-league. That's what it's there for. Not too hard. He was already developed but give Quin the credit anyway!

One of Quin Snyder’s keys for this season was putting up more 3’s. They were 13th last year with 29.6 attempts per game. They were 11th for 3 point percentage, making 36.6%. So far this year they have increased their attempts to 31.8 per game, but are down in the ranking to 18th. Oddly enough we are shooting an identical percentage this year as last year at 36.6%.

Less Exum, Rubio and Favors and the % will go up

Look at how few midrange shots there are. We are taking very few shots that aren’t behind the arc or in the paint. I love it!

I'd love if they could actually shoot or make lay ups in some cases

Gobert has played at All-NBA level consistently since 2016
Barring injury he’s deserving.

Sitting at 3-4, the Peskies have had a mediocre start to the season record-wise. As for the locker room and organization in general, they're a mess. We've heard former Jazz players complain about three-hour practices before, but the way the Timberwolves players talk it seems like coach Tom Thibodeau has found a way to make them play three hours per game. To be real, he probably would do that if he could. Because of all this, Jimmy Butler will probably be the subject of trade rumors until the deadline.

He'll be gone by January.

Jae Crowder and Joe Ingles each missed a 3-pointer that could have tied it for Utah. Rose then blocked a 3-point try by Dante Exum with 2.7 seconds to go, and the Timberwolves grabbed the loose ball to seal it.

Well, while such has largely seemed to be the case for Crowder and Exum, who have gotten off to considerably solid starts, it appears quite the opposite for Ricky Rubio. Much like he did last season, Rubio is off to an abysmal start, perhaps the worst of any Jazzman. The sample size is still quite small and time is ample, but the current trend remains an absolutely discouraging one.

Dante Exum looks ready to be a starter in the NBA. Now what?

He's mostly been a crappy back-up save what 3 games? :wtf:

When Dante Exum was draft four years ago, Dennis Lindsey urged the Utah fanbase to be patient. After all, the Jazz General Manager had just drafted a player who was in the throws of acne. The just out of high school athletic phenom had never played against competition even close to the level that he was about to face in the NBA. Toss in being the highest lottery pick since Deron Williams and Dante Exum had a lot of expectations to live up to. Year after year fans have wondered if this would be the year Dante Exum breaks out.

Early Season Injuries

Really? The Jazz have had the advantage over their opponents so far there

Alec Burks is out with a hand injury, Derrick Favors has missed some time and, of course, worst of all, Donovan Mitchell recently suffered a hamstring injury which held him out of the end of the game against the Timberwolves (likely costing his team the game) and out of the entirety of an ugly loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.

Burks wouldn't have layed anyway and they are better off without Favors at the 4

However, while I believe the decision was right, so far the result has been far from it.

It made no sense. Thabo, Neto and Burks aren't favorites of the coach. Why bring them back? Don't get me started on their small 3 either.
