When does it arrive? When do you feel glad it did or when do you have moments of regret after?

Moreso when the sun is down, because I feel like I have to compensate. But I was born under Sun-Pluto alignment, which changes the nature of the ego. It becomes more black-and-white, all-or-nothing. So the sun shining, I feel comfortable that my ego is healthy. But under nightfall I can become urgent about being validated.
I would imagine those born under Saturn alignment would have the easiest time keeping their ego under control.

When faced with humiliation or violence
You get a very quick subconscious grasp of who you really are
It can be scary. You feel it in your gut, the butterflies
Have you ever been in a relationship breakup and turned into somebody dark with rage/jealousy you never thought you had? It's nuts, you can become evil fast and say/do wild hateful shit. With age you learn to compose and manage sweating the small stuff.

Are you referring to the Freudian concept of Ego, or the general definition of ego as a sense of pride, ambition, etc?

Some Sufi Muslims focus on annihilating the ego by remembering God as much as possible.

Anywho, here's a different perspective--- the purpose of ego is to know God.
Because man has faculties like hearing, seeing, thinking, imagination etc---he knows that there is One who created Him that has full knowledge of the above.
Like a measuring device. Ex. I can lift... 45 pounds with one hand-- I see that the waves move, that the planets have an orbit, that we are on a piece of rock that's moving/rotating at extremely fast speeds,---therefore, I know I AM WEAK and my Creator is All-Strong.
Some mystical saints have an interpretation that the story of Moses and the Children of Israel--and Pharoah alludes to the everlasting battle of man vs himself--that is the spiritual aspect of man against his own tyrannical ego.
The ego is diametrically opposed to the spirit. The ego wants to claim ownership, it wants to feed itself, it wants validation, it wants such and such.. it wants to beat everyone else and wants others to be defeated.. it doesn't want to admit it's wrong---whereas the spirit yearns for closeness with God.
You can see the examples in leaders like Trump vs Robert E. Lee. Robert E. Lee is a man who prayed for the welfare of his enemies.
Hence, you hear lyrics like in Matisyahu "King without a crown," ---"you want God but you can't deflate your ego!!" and why humility is an extremely important trait in all religions.
To attain knowledge one must be humble---and attaining more knowledge ought to lead to more humility (unfortunately that is not the case in certain situations as it may cause a professor to feel they can talk down to students)
On the spiritual path--we want to think less of our selves and more of our Creator, Most Merciful.
Whichever way you follow---be it the "flow" moment the New Age religions preach, or being in the present as Eckhart Tolle advocates, or surrendering to the Tao--the main point is to experience true PEACE we want to be aligned and surrendered to the Creator. Which means purifying the ego and just BEING.
Peace and love.
