Little to no homelessness. Everyone employed contributing to a strong economy. Great food. Most people owning their home. Are people overall happy there? seems perfect

Is it a nice place to retire? My pops is always telling me how he wants to go there. I'm like, do you really wanna be that far away from everyone else? :oldlol:

By no means, but it's good for expats with high salaries and for short visits. Also good place to raise kids in. On the positive side, it's extremely clean, safe and pleasant overall. Amazing food also. On the negative, extremely expensive, hot and boring. Not many decent jobs unless you're in computer science, artificial intelligence or the likes, and even then cost of living is absurd. I spend there 4/5 days a month and personally I'm quite sick of it.

What is perfect? There are also a lot of cons to Singapore.

The oil trading business used to be good as well, and maybe vessel operation? IMO it is the perfect example of how perfection is either unattainable or it's inherently a flawed concept. By all means Singapore is what you'd think a perfect city should be, but then you realise that those expectations come at a cost. Cleanliness and rule of law in Singapore is pretty much unrivaled but at the same time it makes life expensive and boring.

It's subjective is what it is. Some people love Singapore's government dictatorship while others don't. Some like hot weather while others love winter. Some find it too small while others don't care about that.

I don't mind hot weather (obviously, since I live in Jakarta which any cooler). Singapore, though, is not only hot and humid, but also sunny as hell. It feels like the hottest major city in the region to me.

Maybe those too, I'm not sure as they fall outside of my area of expertise. I do know that the likes of Grab, Lazada, etc, are snatching every halfway decent computer scientist in SE Asia, especially if they know anything about machine learning, AI, neural networks and such. The financial sector used to be good too, but they have been shifting strongly towards local talent in the last few years. Those huge expats packages are slowly starting to become a thing of the past pretty much everywhere, except for the very senior executive levels.

Annual sunshine hours:
Jakarta 2,975
Singapore 2,022

yes, in some ways, but you need to be rich and cannot be a pot smoker.
food = excellent.
100% authentic Malaysian, Indonesian, Nonya, Thai, Chinese of all regions, Indian. Good continental, American chains, passable Mexican, British pub fare etc... You won't get that home cooked Western meal but you will eat better than almost anywhere else if you like food with flavor.
nightlife = underrated (best of the best in Asia if you are not afraid to drop several hundred on a good night out).
Good brewhouses, good bars, 3 or 4 good nightlife areas, good discos, good whoring (if that is your bag), and nothing closes early.
girls = local girls are the ugliest of all the Chinese nations (Singaporeans will tell you this as well), BUT tons of attractive girls from all over the world move there (Africans, Latinas, Asians, Indians, Central Asians, Russians), and its still Asia, so not too many fatties.
weather = sticky hot (on the equator), but lots of aircon, good public transport and relatively cheap cabs.
travel to and from = excellent, flights to everywhere and cheap on excellent airlines. plus so many cool places just an hour or two away by flight.
Assimilating = very good, English speaking country, BUT you will never be one of them, they still look down on non-Chinese S'porean, always that unclimbable hurdle.
Seems far, but once you are there you are so close to so much cool shit and so many cool places (Australia, Africa, Asia) you will feel the US is the isolated one.

It's a city for the rich. High taxes, extremely limited space for growth (forced to grow vertically rather than horizontally), crowded, hot, expensive restaurants/housing/products/grocery..
It's nice technology-wise though. Most hi-tech city right up there with Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei, and San Francisco..
Nice public transportation too. Public transportation is cheaper and faster than cars.

It's a city state so if you are an outdoorsman it's far from ideal.
