Michael Carter-Williams was just waived by the Chicago Bulls just before his contract became guaranteed. He was the no. 11 overall pick with the Sixers in 2013.

This year he is putting up:
4-1-1 on 41/37/46 (yes, 46% FT)

During his rookie campaign with the Sixers he put up:
17-6-6 on 41/26/70 with 2 steals a game

Last year he played 52 games, averaging 16 mpg and put up:
5-2-3 on 33/24/82

Regarding his NBA debut vs Miami at age 22

Williams messed around and flirted with a rare quadruple double by racking up 22 points, 12 assists, 7 rebounds and a rookie record of 9 steals! He also hit 4 3-pointers, only turned the ball over 1 time and started his career with a dunk in front of the 19,523 fans in attendance.

So...what the hell happened?

Some players just lose confidence when they are tossed from team to team and never get a proper chance. MCW looked an interesting prospect but you need to believe that youre good and I don't think he does anymore.

Good point. His shooting never seemed to get better either. His FG% was always pretty low every single year, I wonder if he needed a shooting coach too.

Yeah we all know Bran requires video confiscation, NBA to remove stats from their databases, commish intervention, and cheap collusions in order to be relevant.

We all know this.

Some players can live without the shooting, like Simmons or Giannis. MCW was great athletic specimen with a lot of feel for the game, so shooting was always secondary to him. The big question is why he has declined even on the good things he has been doing?

Its difficult to identify cause and effect as to why certain players never seem to pan out. sometimes they simply peak early, sometimes they get distracted from the good life and are not dedicated enough to improving (like Milicic who was simply just not that into basketball), and sometimes their talent was simply overrated. But the latter is related to what I said about confidence: if you have confidence, you will play better than you actually are objectively and it will show.

However just as this is a spiral effect of mutual reinforcement, it is also the reverse. If somebody puts you down, you will play worse than you can, and that will put you down additionally. Its a chicken and egg thing, you can never know which came the first.

I liked MCW's game. He was also a good defender. Shame he ended up like this. Often a lot of it is about the context, who were his teammates, coaches, how was he integrated in the gameplan, and also his private situation.

Sadly, about 75% of them end up being about him in some way.

I've rarely seen him playing with passion. Seems like someone who is there for the money, unlike Jimmer. Jimmer is not in the NBA because of his shortcomings, not because he lacks passion for the game. If he had MCW's height, his story would be so different.

Like how the basketball gods made LeRoid the laughing stock of 'superstars' for being a ped cheating, manufactured, colluding loser?

Not everyone has the drive to get better, and thats when you start to get worse. I remember a young MCW playing at a random NYC street tournament and no one even knew who he was because he was trash. He worked hard to get where he is today. He got what he wanted, the money. Cant blame him

He got a weird skin condition and was never the same. Glad the Hinkster shipped his ass out before he got exposed.

I remember his very first NBA game. Nearly a quadruple double against the NBA champs. Brings me back to a time where I had hope.

Nothing happened. He was just allowed to do whatever he wanted on the tanking Sixers his rookie season, but he was never any good.

MCW might have peaked higher than Lonzo ever will :oldlol:

It's crazy the trajectories of some players.

He was a mini Giannis, but somehow his finishing ability around the rim evaporated. For me going from being able to finish around the rim to not being able is simply a reflection of a major drop in the self perception as a player.

@Michael_Levin
if you ignore the internal strife, the same FO that ended in scandal, a near-death allergic reaction to an already-injured rookie, the strangest injury/mental health issue in NBA history, a racist dad, a lack of depth, and a human trafficking investigation,

the sixers are 26-14

He was literally never good lol, regardless of what his inflated, low efficiency box score numbers were. He never worked on his game hard enough, had some injuries rob him of some athleticism, and just continued to fall off every year. He was bad from the start and declined to below NBA level.

eh. a team just needs to give him 30 minutes a game and he'll be a star that can give you 13/4.5/3 on .38/.17/.68

just give him the keys to a team already.
