View Full Version : Why is Kobes legacy aging like fine wine?

Mr. Jabbar
01-07-2019, 03:11 PM
And why does the NBA connoisseur always picks Kobe over lebron?

Is it the hard-earned FIVE western rings?
Is it the loyalty to a team?
Is it despising collusion to the point of getting rid of another atg?
Is it the fact refs and league never made rules to favor him?
Is it his strong foundation when put under the eye-test and context lens?

IMO its a combination of all of them.

We don't hate Lebron. He's our guy, he's a Laker and will be for life. All the respect to one of the best to ever play the game....but we are not going to pretend that Kobe wasn't a notch above just cause the King is leading the team atm.

its pretty obvious kobe is the true 2nd greatest player of all time when every single time theres a lebron/MJ discussion on fox/nba tv/espn or somewhere else and the people have to say "isn't kobe being slighted/passed over here"

i've heard this line a million times. nobody ever says "isn't russell or duncan or shaq or magic or bird or kareem or wilt being slighted/passed over"

nope... they only bring up kobe

The man was perhaps the most skilled player ever, a complete game physically and mentally - rarely does a player have one aspect let alone both

Dominated in a bigman era before the league became guard oriented, unfortunately he was out of his prime before this current offensive explosion began.

Of course, 5/7 helps as well as most series wins against teams with 50+ wins. People can keep discrediting him but real basketball purists know his place among the best of the absolute best.

Excellent post, my friend. Truly reaffirms OP's declaration that Kobe's legacy is like a fine wine. Even after almost 3 years since his grand finale, I am still unraveling layers and subtleties to his game, discovering some new facet or skill that I did not notice during his career. Like a finely aged pinot noir, Kobe's legacy is full of surprises! But this is only understood by the most urbane sophisticate of NBA fans--those of us with a truly refined eye test, and NOT for the box score (boxed wine) watchers.

Kobe's legacy is aging more like milk tbh. His all time rankings are going down quicker than milk gets rotten.

Right when he retired, he was ~9th (recency bias).

Less than a year later, he already dropped to 12th (more objective but still overrating).

Now most people have him falling out of the top 12 by the end of this season.

He's going to drop out of it. He's a modern day Wilt with the same 33% finals record. Nobody really considers Wilt in the top 3. Once LeBron is retired (all of us can't wait for that day) he's ONLY going to be remember as the guy that kept losing in the finals. It won't look as great on his resume.

WINNERS will remain in the top 3 and that will be MJ, Kareem and Russell.

kobe fans are content with his place all time. you can nitpick his career but after jordan he's the next guy people talk about for all time impact on basketball

lebron might have more individual accomplishments but nobody likes the guy

you know for a fact if kobe did space jam it makes 400 million in China alone

I'm a Kobe guy for life but the one thing his resume is lacking are the big time playoff performances - especially as #24. And I know people can cite examples from his career it's just we could have used a little extra Kobe-playoff-magic on the back end of his career.

To me, he was a egotistical and selfish player but he squeezed that toothpaste. I watched this dude play through so many injuries. Literally fly in from Colorado during his rape case just so he could play. He wanted that smoke.. Real men respect him. He is an icon for sure.

And MJ wasn't :lol Jordan punched his own teammate in the face in practice that being Steve Kerr Kobe has never attacked any teammate physically.

i think kobe sacrificed more individually than anyone. hes probably the least selfish player ever considering what he could have easily averaged over his career ( 30-33ppg ) and what he ended up averaging ( 25ppg )

he could have had 10 games where he approached 100 and who knows. if he wasn't a facilitator in the first half of that 81 point game vs toronto he may have dropped 100... we've all seen him drop 45 in the first half and 55 in the second half. so he was more than capable of that accomplishment

but he never really stat padded much or gunned for scoring titles. jordan admitted he did gun of them so even though he was successful he was still much more of a selfish player than kobe was

during 2003 when kobe was going off on his 40 point game streak kobe willingly ended it himself because phil told him "they were losing shaq"

who knows what he may have done from then on out before he got injured in the playoffs and needed surgery. that was possibly his greatest version and shaq made him shut it down
