See this is where being around a while or researching helps out. The narrative was changed for Mj as well. For all intents and purposes Wilt was widely regarded as goat during Mj's rise. Sure there were other arguments for guys like Magic, Bird, and surprisingly to a lesser extent Kareem but Wilt was that guy. The change of the narrative to rings during Mj's run actually boosted Russell and Kareem's respective cases long after their careers ended. It was actually the only reason Kobe had a single leg to stand on once he got 5 rings himself. He was immediately attacked by Mj fans in the same way we have seen Lebron be afterwards. But we all knew Kobe wasn't as great as Mj that much was clear, the ridiculous ring narrative put him where he didn't belong. (and i say this as a fan who thoroughly enjoyed Kobe's career, he was my replacement Mj once he retired. )Pretty much after Kobe was crucified in the goat debates it became the status quo so to speak, now Lebron or anyone after him who dares to be great enough to be mentioned among the best will get the same treatment that no greats before Kobe got.
