View Full Version : Who is the better passer?

Bird or Bron
3ball
01-19-2019, 06:09 PM
Bird got most assists within a second or 2 of catching the ball (so without disrupting ball movement), while lebron gets most assists after a long pondering with the ball, thus disrupting ball movement and struggling on the championship level, 3/9
No comparison. Bird was the superior passer

Bird was the “fancier” passer. He was the MJ/Kobe of passing. A lot of flash and spectacle, but not as much pure impact as Lebron’s pinpoint passes to players he personally opened up the defense for.
This is no disrespect to Bird, he is a legend. But Im giving this one to LeVision.

I actually don't think this is true
I think Bird is a better off ball passer so he's less demanding of his teams touches. Don't think fancy is the best word for his passes because as far as I can see the form follows the function. They look fancy because the function of what he's doing is next level stuff.
LeBron has some real corkscrew dazzling passes himself but just the same I see a purpose first. The thing I don't like is LeBron sometimes falls on this bad habit of pounding the clock away waiving 4 players off to stand still in the corner and just "be ready" to catch a difficult to catch bullet pass that he corkscrews through 5 defenders. If they make it it's considered a great highlight by LeBron and if they miss it his fans cry that he has no help. I think it's a bad play. You account for those bad habit iso plays and I think Bird is a better passer.
To each their own though. Bron is an all time great passer I won't dispute that I'm just not a fan of how he does some of them in the grand scheme of 5 on 5.

Can't go wrong either way. BUT from a stationary position or off a dribble or two, Bird could be the best passer of all time! BUT Bron was better in terms of an ALL COURT PASSER. Meaning he would ACTUALLY play more like a PG. And use his handles more to create off the dribble and drop off dimes. More similar to Magic type passer than a Bird type passer.
They are the top two passing forwards of all time. And are BETTER than most PG's passing. It takes the guys like Magic, Stockton, Nash, Zeke, and Kidd to be just as good or better passing the rock. ONLY reason Bron and Bird never averaged 10 dimes a night is because they were such dominant scorers. And were SF's instead of PG's flat out. Even though Bron has played the PG spot flat out in his career of course. BUT if i could see any two guys play together from different eras, I think Bron-Bird would be at the top of the list. The way they would complement each other would have been scary. The weaker points one would have, the other could EASILY cover up for it!

Lebron is good at throwing fast and accurate passes into the corners, but that's about it.
He very rarely "wows" the crowd.
Lebron stans don't get this cause they just watch boxscores, but real basketball fans are just not wowed by Lebron.
Luka on the other hand, wowes the crowd multiple times a game. Jokic is the same. Lebron is only impressive in the same way Karl Malone was impressive.

Haha no I think Laz actually thought Bird was over rated. By old I meant he had been around on here before myself even. If I said you'd know who he was for sure. But I'm not going to be the guy to unmask him, like Kane he's probably better off with it on. Doesn't need to be pigeonholed

Bird had that killer instinct from day one , Bron later.
but their passing is best of NBA historic forwards.

Bird's passes seemed more instinctive to me, perhaps a function of being off the ball. He wasn't on-ball using seconds off the clock surveying the court for the perfect opportunity, or slashing to the rim causing the defense to collapse leading to open shooters in position to leverage the open opportunity. Alot of his passing were threading the needle within packed paints since the court wasn't spread out like it is now.

Bird easily. Particularly in the half court and with those smooth ass touch passes. Magic was the best fast break passer ever. Bird was the best half court passer ever.

"off-ball passing" is not a nonsense term
it just refers to a player playing off-ball, receiving the pass, and then passing again. It is not some sorcery where a player uses telekinesis to make a pass without touching the rock. "off-ball" just means non-pg

Wtf does that have to do with passing ability
Situations dummy
LeBron is 100x better at passing off of pick and rolls
LeBron is 100x better at passing in transition
In terms of halfcourt passing they're equal
Bird is slightly better at passing out of the post
LeBron is the much better ball handler and actually has the ability to warp the entire defense unlike Bird
LeBron can pull off every pass that Bird could do but Bird is not athletic enough and doesn't have a good enough handle to do what LeBron could do therefore LeBron is better

I know right? Basketball fans watch basketball.
The more of a fan of basketball you are the more interested you should be in watching it - Hell I pretty much will watch any game at any level and uniqueness (like "a long time ago" - almost makes it more appealing). I've stuck around in my rec league just to watch other teams in other divisions play sometimes after my own game ended. Basketball is fun to watch - I don't see what's so difficult to believe about fans watching old NBA games

The fact that Bron can play as a PG FLAT OUT shouldn't be so glossed over. Or running the offense from the point forward position shouldn't be overlooked. Both are passing savants no doubt. But Bron is BETTER at Bird in terms of breaking down a defense and dropping the dimes the way a Magic, Stockton, or Kidd would.
And Bron IS pass first on top of it. So he's seeing plays before it happens just like Bird would. Bird has his advantages. Bron has his advantages. To say one was WAY BETTER than the other passing doesn't make sense to me. U could go either way!
