Depends how you define terrifying, I've researched serial killers for some time now ever since my dad showed me dirt he collected from John Gacys property not long after it was finished being dug up. All of them are unsettling but Angels of death in particular are pretty damn creepy. Not all of these will be angels of death, or have the resume of others... but some you can easily consider just as terrifying as the violent types

That recent guy up in Cleveland, Anthony Sowell was pretty gnar gnar. 11 bodies, necro, just left the corpses rotting around his house for years. Smelled so bad, neighbors were complaining about the meat shop next to his duplex but it was just the bloated bodies stinking up the hood.
11 different crackhead chicks gone missing, raped, strangled, killed. More raped and even released by him. Cleveland PD in the ghetto didn't even blick an eye, even went to his house a few times and knocked on the door. Left after 5 min.
Not over a span of decades, 11 neighborhood girls murked in 2 years time. Few bodies in the basement, upstairs, closets, backyard.

IMO Joseph Fritzl from Austria was the most disturbing of them all
Not so serial spree, but the fact he kept his 18yo daughter in a dungeon prison for 24years and raped/had kids with her, while she raised the kids in the dungeon. Few abortions/miscarriages. Fck

No doubt the US government has done unforgivable things...Still does...But if you add up all the deaths those countries you listed caused, on top of how many more could have died if we didnt enter WW2 with nazi germany who knows what the world would look like today. Allies could have still won, Russia might have been too much for Germany even without the pesky US. It has definitely done good also, but I guess that could be likened to some of these other countries that had benefit for their own but did horrible things also. So it's not a free pass

Albert Fish raped, tortured, killed, and ate young children. Not young men like Gacy or Dahmer preferred, but little children.
Here's his description of what he did to four-year-old Billy Gaffney:
I brought him to the Riker Avenue dumps. There is a house that stands alone, not far from where I took him. I took the boy there. Stripped him naked and tied his hands and feet and gagged him with a piece of dirty rag I picked out of the dump. Then I burned his clothes. Threw his shoes in the dump. Then I walked back and took the trolley to 59 Street at 2 a.m. and walked from there home. Next day about 2 p.m., I took tools, a good heavy cat-o-nine tails. Home made. Short handle. Cut one of my belts in half, slit these halves in six strips about 8 inches long. I whipped his bare behind till the blood ran from his legs. I cut off his ears, nose, slit his mouth from ear to ear. Gouged out his eyes. He was dead then. I stuck the knife in his belly and held my mouth to his body and drank his blood. I picked up four old potato sacks and gathered a pile of stones. Then I cut him up. I had a grip with me. I put his nose, ears and a few slices of his belly in the grip. Then I cut him through the middle of his body. Just below the belly button. Then through his legs about 2 inches below his behind. I put this in my grip with a lot of paper. I cut off the head, feet, arms, hands and the legs below the knee. This I put in sacks weighed with stones, tied the ends and threw them into the pools of slimy water you will see all along the road going to North Beach. I came home with my meat. I had the front of his body I liked best. His monkey and pee wees and a nice little fat behind to roast in the oven and eat. I made a stew out of his ears, nose, pieces of his face and belly. I put onions, carrots, turnips, celery, salt and pepper. It was good. Then I split the cheeks of his behind open, cut off his monkey and pee wees and washed them first. I put strips of bacon on each cheek of his behind and put them in the oven. Then I picked 4 onions and when the meat had roasted about 1/4 hour, I poured about a pint of water over it for gravy and put in the onions. At frequent intervals I basted his behind with a wooden spoon. So the meat would be nice and juicy. In about 2 hours, it was nice and brown, cooked through. I never ate any roast turkey that tasted half as good as his sweet fat little behind did. I ate every bit of the meat in about four days. His little monkey was a sweet as a nut, but his pee-wees I could not chew. Threw them in the toilet.

Zodiac was a hoax. The letters were fake as shit. Those murders were never connected.
Lol no. The survivors saw him. Bryan Hartnell at Lake Berryessa described the garb he was wearing and the visible Zodiac symbol.
Now, Zodiac may very likely have taken credit for additional crimes that he had nothing to do with just for the attention. And Zodiac may have not even been one person but multiple people, which would help explain why Arthur Leigh Allen had so much circumstantial evidence against him but no DNA matches.
But there was undoubtedly at least one person killing people, calling in the murders to police twice, and mailing the 408 and 340 ciphers to newspapers under the name Zodiac.
This is a good short documentary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY_tqjdnDVk) that accompanied the great film in 2007. I think some of those being interviewed, like Spinelli and Cheney, might be lying for various reasons. But I find something to be off about Cheney. They should run his DNA honestly.

Another name missing from this list is Jeffrey Dahmer. Drilling holes in the victim's skull, pouring hydrochloric acid, turning one into a walking zombie that managed to escape out onto the street and get some people to call 911. Only to result in Dahmer convincing the cops that it was just a domestic dispute. The officers helped him bring his victim back to Dahmer's apartment and even noticed a foul smell (decomposing bodies) before leaving. Dahmer went on to kill him and like 4 or 5 others after that. 17 in total.

insane (spoilers ahead for anyone not familiar with the case)
dude was just raping and slaughtering dozens of people, in his own general neighborhood... while he was working as a police officer. he never strayed further than like 30 miles from where he was living when he committed his acts too. so he'd do his shift as a cop, punch out and go on a rampage in his area, then maybe the next day he was the cop called to the scene of the crime he committed.
he would've died a free man too if it wasn't for a one in a million shot by the cop who had the cold case.

Naw. The letters and ciphers were never proven to be from the killer. They were probably written by someone who had access to evidence and police reports. Either someone at the PD or in the media. Robert Graysmith and the SF chronicle just wanna sell books. The police reports really say each murder had real suspects with real motives, and aside from the 2 in Vallejo there are no connections to any of them. Only thing tying all this together are the fake letters and the Lake Berryessa copycat.

People understood this until snowflake liberals became such a loudmouth minority. We tamed the Japs and the Germans, and eventually the Soviets. US to the world..."you're welcome" :pimp:
US gave the Jap scientists and docs from Unit 731 massacre compete immunity and full time jobs post WW2
This included all the engineers and IQ's from Nazi regime also, US snatched all that research and brushed their experiments under the rug
Where do you think the medicinal, industrial and tech boom rooted from? :hammerhead:

America also used Werner von Braun and Nazi rocket concepts to win the space race. Jet engine technology also comes from Nazi Germany, which we improved upon. Many of our NASA scientists back then were from Nazi Germany/Japan from WW2. It is just how it goes in life. Winners of war get the spoils of war, whether it is technology, resources, land, money or people.

Clown rapist is pretty bad. He might take the cake. BTK is very disturbing too on how he was able to pull off a double life for so long. He seemed like he was just some dorky ass family man who (ironically) was obsessed the with rules. John Gacy did this in a similar fashion as well. Imagine if a co worker or family member you knew for 20+ years turned out to have been killing people the entire time. Something like that would shake your world view I imagine. It probably would be hard to truly ever trust anyone again.

Japanese killed millions of civilians...
Again, the Japanese ARMY did this...
So the Japanese are terrible because they killed a whole lot of civilians...doesn't that make the US also terrible because we also killed a whole lot of civilians, just not as many as the Japanese?
Back to the thread topic...in my opinion, when considering which serial killers are amongst the worst, body count should not be the only factor nor the deciding factor either. The type of victim and the severity of the act should be accounted for. GTFOH with those nurses who poisoned old folks as being amongst the worst, lol. Those who rape/torture/slaughter children should be considered the most depraved subhumans of all. It is much much much worse killing a child then some methhead hooker or some fggot, sorry.
Albert Fish (someone already mentioned him) is really underrated as a serial killer while Manson is way overrated since he didn't actually kill anyone himself...lets just include Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot too if we are gonna include dudes who ordered others to kill.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were legit military targets. No one, especially back then, were going to hold off attacking major military and industrial war machine targets just because civilians surrounded it. A good portion of those "civilians" were part of the war effort anyway. The end totally justified the means in this case since Japan was the agitator and the US was just defending itself. That bomb saved a lot more Asian, American AND JAPANESE lives than it took, end of story.
The funny thing is, A LOT MORE German civilians were killed in allied bombings than that bomb took but you don't ever hear any snowflakes crying over these Nazi sympathizers deaths. :oldlol:

He's not classified as a serial killer though since he never did any of the killing.
Yes. That was Tex Watson. He was the killer (on his own, not from Manson's orders. It was drug-related):

Multiple people spoke to him on the phone moments after the murders.

Again the calls were never proven through any forensics to be from the actual killer or killers. Just like the letters they were most likely hoax

How would someone call police after each murder, confess to the killings and provide details of the murders if they weren't involved in the killings? These phone calls took place before police were even on the scene. Pieces of Paul Stine's bloody shirt were mailed in with the letters.
You're not making sense.

At first I thought you said Tool Box Killers. Then I noticed it was singular. The Tool Box Killers didn't kill that many victims but their rape/torture/murders were viscious even by serial killer standards. Tearing out pieces of teenage girl's private parts while they were still alive. Then going out and volunteering to help the needy, and regularly donating not insignificant sums of money to help our their less fortunate neighbors. :wtf:

At the Newseum in Washington DC, I remember going through the FBI's Famous Cases exhibit there. They had the shed the Unabomber lived in, some 9/11 wreckage, the shoes the would-be Shoe Bomber wore when he tried to blow his plane up, some other relics from famous Ganglang-era cases.
One of the displays was a painting John Wayne Gacy sent to the FBI detective who led the investigation and eventually helped catch him. It was a self-portrait of himself in one of his clown costumes and a message congratulated him for catching him. It closed with some quote about patience and harvesting...I don't remember exactly what it was but I walked away from that exhibit about as creeped out as I had ever been in my life. Gacy's been dead for years and he scared the shit out of me with that.

This is a subject I've been a fan of forever. I'm probably mostly a Zodiac fan, because he's the first book I ever read in the true crime genre, but I've read tons of books on tons of killers. I have less time now as I've gotten older, but I still find myself falling down rabit holes on youtube and even text driven websites.
The torture guys to me are the scariest. Gacy on the original list. I was deep into BTK when he finally got caught. I do like the unsolved cases with communication to police, almost certainly because of how fascinated I became with Zodiac during the 90s from reading Graysmith's book, and then whatever I could find on the topic. BTK felt like a more extreme version when I got into him. Nanners mentioned Toy Box who is extreme.
I scanned through this thread, and most of the big ones have been hit.
I'd throw out Isreal Keyes, as an interesting case if you've never heard of him. He's most scary because of the amount of preparation he put into his killings:
For the Currier murders, he flew to Chicago where he rented a car to drive the 1000 additional miles to Vermont. He then used the murder kit he had hidden two years earlier to perform the murders.

F*ck... the Ledford murder in particular was horrific. Reading the transcript (https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/watchingrobertpickton88015/transcript-of-shirley-lynette-ledford-audio-record-t3312.html) and you can even hear the actual screams from the audio tape being played in the courtroom at 26:44 in this NBC footage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY4YmVi4_LQ&t=26m44s), even after the doors close.
Apparently one of the detectives ended up killing himself and citing the audio tape in his suicide note. The tape is played for new FBI recruits to desensitize them.
Stephen Kay, the prosecutor at Bittaker's trial, still considers the murders committed by Bittaker and Norris as being the worst criminal case he has ever prosecuted or encountered, and remains insistent in his belief that Bittaker deserves to be executed more than any other inmate incarcerated on California's death row. In interviews, he has stated that for over two years following the trial of Lawrence Bittaker, his sleep was disturbed by recurring nightmares in which he would be rushing to Bittaker's van to prevent harm coming to the girls, but would "always get there too late."
With Stephen Kay forewarning the jury: "For those of you who do not know what hell is like, you will find out." More than 100 people were present in the courtroom as the tape was played, and many members of both the jury and the audience wept openly upon hearing the contents, with several members of the audience either burying their heads in their hands, daubing tears from their eyes or rushing out of the courtroom before the tape had finished. Bittaker was undisturbed at hearing the contents of the tape—smiling throughout the hearing of the recording'
Detective Paul Bynum, the chief investigator of the murders committed by Bittaker and Norris, committed suicide in December 1987. He was 39 years old. In a ten-page suicide note, Bynum specifically referred to the murders committed by Bittaker and Norris as haunting him, and of his fear they may be released from prison.
The audio tape Bittaker and Norris created of themselves raping and torturing Shirley Lynette Ledford remains in the possession of the FBI Academy. The audio cassette is now used to train and desensitize FBI agents to the raw reality of torture and murder.
And somehow Bittaker is still alive today, just sitting on death row.

Goddamn, guy sat there smiling as the tape is played and enjoying it.. Pretty f*cked up. :confusedshrug:
So the investigator killed himself over that.. In the 80s, it was probably new so I can see why the investigator would kill himself over this. Today, he probably wouldn't. Today, the screams are scary but not enough for someone to kill himself over. I have seen some scary stuff, so I guess I am desensitized myself over the years.. I think a lot of people nowadays are desensitized and don't feel much. Perhaps the doing of modern technology, computers, social media, graphic videogames/tv shows/movies..
