"In the year 1241, after very little warning, terrified monarchs all over Europe could do little but wait as a terrible and colossal wave of nomadic steppe warriors descended upon them from the eastern borders of Christendom. Tens of thousands of highly organised, highly trained and highly experienced nomadic horse archers from beyond the edge of the world. Experts at living off the land, all the Mongol war machine needed to operate was open grassland to feed its horses, cities to plunder, and glory to win, and as chance would have it, lush grasslands just so happened to stretch in an almost unbroken line from France all the way back to Mongolia...."

The tactic of opening up a gap so the enemy doesn't fight for a last stand, but eventually break to flee towards the opening only to be run down is ****ing brilliant. I doubt they would have been able to take England... too fortified, wooded, with damn good Calvary etc. But had they continued it would of definitely changed the face or Europe.

Pizza Tower (https://pizzatower.io/)

The Mongol invasion of Europe was one of the most significant military campaigns of the medieval period, and it had a profound impact on the course of European history. Although the Mongols were eventually forced to retreat, their invasion demonstrated the power and effectiveness of the Mongol military machine and set the stage for further Mongol conquests in Asia and beyond.

Pizza tower? Nice try, buddy!

From what I understand, Genghis Khan would bed down the queens and princesses of captured lands.

IIRC the Mongol invasion stopped twice because their Great Khan died. And after Ogedei Khan died the Mongol Empire began to decentralize and the successor states like the Golden Horde were lesser threats to Europe.

Anyways the Mongols were probably the greatest conquerors in history. They demolished armies much more powerful than theirs on paper with exceptional discipline. Only a very skilled and experienced force can feign retreat in battle and then re-engage and envelop the enemy. The light cavalry armed with bows gave them lots of speed and ability to hit and run opponents who were wearing more armor until they wore them down.
