We all know about no handchecking, but let’s look further into why Kobe and T-Mac averaging 30 a game 15 years ago was more impressive than Harden dropping 35 a game right now:

The Rockets currently have a pace of 96.9, which is 27th out of 30. The league average is 99.5. They’re also getting to the line 25.8 times per game, which is good for 4th with 11.9 belonging to Harden.

Kobe averaged 30 on the nose in 2003. The Lakers had a pace of 92.5, which was 8th. They got to the line 26 times a game, good for 8th with 8.7 belonging to Kobe.

McGrady averaged 32.1 in 2003. The Magic had a pace of 93.1, good for 5th. The Magic got to the line 25.4 times a game, good for 9th with 9.7 belonging to T-Mac.
_________________________________________________
Another thing to keep in mind is overall points. The Rockets average 112.3 PPG, good for 12th. 19 of the 30 teams average over 110 PPG and no one is under 100.

The Lakers in ‘03 averaged 100.4 PPG, 4th in the league while the Magic were 6th at 98.5. Only 4 teams hit 100 PPG that season and 2 teams were under 90.
_________________________________________________
So to sum it up the fact Kobe and T-Mac were able to average 30+ a game with handchecking, a much slower pace and 2-3 fewer trips a game to the line were more impressive than Harden at 35-36 a game while getting to the line 12 times a game.

Dude I'm sorry but all of your logic is going to be ignored by 30 Bran alts quoting eachother spamming memes and emojis because that's what this board has become.

But you're absolutely right. People just look at PPG!! and if you're averaging empty triple doubles. Nobody takes into account that games this era are ending 140-139 every game while games in the early 2000s were ending 80-79. And people compare stats between the two eras without using a lick of their brain and draw a conclusion from that.

Kobe only averaged 25ppg!! Then those same people mention Kobe was a bench warmer/irrelevant for the first few and last few years of his career and then fail to realize just how impressive it is that his career average is STILL at 25ppg despite the 5-6 down years bringing his #s down.

L0L Harden has better stats than Kobe ever had therefore Harden >> Kobe!!

Bran stans are legit the lowest IQ species out there

Harden's averaging 36/8/7. Not 35.

Harden is putting up raw numbers night now that haven't been seen since MJ...and that's what's going to end up in the record books.

Not what "D.J. from InsideHoops" thinks is more impressive. :lol :lol

I'm pretty sure most people know that Kobe and T-Mac were far better players than Harden is/was in spite of the numbers due to his high volume of free throw attempts.

And his post season play being subpar correlates to that.

Averaging 36PPG and NBA fans don't even want to see this guy start in an all star game. Tells you all you need to know.

They're about equally impressive. Right now Harden is playing at a prime Kobe or TMac level. That's his tier.

That the all-star game is a complete joke and should never be used to judge a player's season or career by.

Why even compare Kobe to Harden and McGrady when he clearly wasn't first option and didn't get as much defensive attention as the other 2??

The first GIF that Bobo posted was called due to Harden not givin' enough space to land. It's clear as day.

Why post Rodman and Zo when neither were shooting the ball? The pic doesn't fit the OP's narrative. The only pic that makes sense is the MJ one.

He's the most unwatchable superstar in the history of the NBA. Sucks that reality hasn't hit you yet with the facts cupcake.

I don't care whether he's unwatchable. I care that he's good when it comes to recognition.

I don't like the Rockets style of play, but Harden putting up big numbers carrying the team is exciting, even if some of the ref baiting is off putting. I feel the same way about flopping in general.

That's true.

So imagine someone not named Harden and not playing on the Rockets next year doing this:

2 pointers: 4 of 12 for 8 points at 33%
3 pointers: 4 of 16 for 12 points at 25%
FT: 18 of 20 for 18 points at 90%

38 points right there. It will be a record. Better than Jordan's 37 ppg. Do you think you will praise this imaginary person? Better than Jordan, too?

Kobe averaged 35.4 ppg in 2006 with his team playing at a pace of 90.9.

Yeah, I remember someone adjusted Kobe's numbers to league average pace today and he averaged 38/5/5.

He went 1 for 17 from 3 a week ago and had 30+ points because of his hacky ass FT spamming. I laugh when people post his TS% and not his FG or 3P shooting.

Absolutely, it's because of the way Harden gets his points.

If this was Durant or Curry averaging 35 a game then it would be more respected and impressive.
