Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki and Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade have been named by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver as special team roster additions for the 2019 NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In honor of their extraordinary contributions as iconic NBA champions and beloved ambassadors and in recognition of their All-Star careers, Nowitzki and Wade will take the court for the 68th NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 17 at Spectrum Center.

I would assume the commissioner has the discretion to bestow these kinds of 'career achievement' selections as long as they aren't taking spots from players who are deserving based on current play. In the grand scheme it's a pretty harmless gesture.

It is kinda odd they change the rules so people don’t get in on name alone from people not choosing the best players then put in a guy doing 4ppg on 34% shooting because of his past.

I feel like if you do something like this you should do it how they did it when Magic was voted in the last time when he was no longer playing. Let him play but give his team the extra roster spot so you don’t take it from somebody who has been looking forward to it his entire life. Three players had their only career All-Star games that year. How shitty would it be for one of them to never get to go because a legend got in who isn’t even playing?

I was all for Magic going and he put on a show and I would be fine if they add two legend spots every season. But don’t take the guys who are borderline and then their kids never get to see them make it.

I was listening to Steve Smith talk about it once. Having Jordan in his way he knew he had to fight it out with Reggie, Dumars, and Penny and he usually didn’t have a shot.

Imagine a guy waiting to hear he made it only to be told some other guy made it because he used to deserve it.

Just do an extra spot on each team and I’m in favor of it every year.

Even All-NBA selections are a bit overrated. Wade did not make the 1st team with seasons of 27/6/7/2/1 on 49% (won the FMVP that season) and 26/6/5/2/1 on 50%. Kobe made it over Wade and Kobe averaged 25/5/5/1 on 45%.
