If the can ship Barnes for Gasol, do you think Mavs are contenders?

Doncic
Hardaway Jr
KP
Gasol
?? Depends what the Warriors were looking like, but that could compete with everyone else. Absolutely.

With what depth?
Team is way too thin from top to bottom to be a contender right now.
They'll compete for a low end seed but no way do I see them as a viable contender for anything of significance.

They still have Brunson, Kleber and Powell on the bench. JJ might be able to come back.
JJ, Brunson, Kleber and Powell is a good enough backup. Brunson in particular has shown amazing poise and potential. He could be a real threat off the bench soon.

They'll be in the Playoffs every year and will have at least one good run if everyone's health is fine. They have a HOF coach in Carlisle and a good enough core to beat anyone in a 7-game series. People can say what they want about Luka's defense, but Mavs had many deep Playoff runs with Dirk and he wasn't known for being a good defensive player. KP and Gasol can make up for his mistakes with their help defense.

We get a lot better, but why would the Grizzlies do this?

The Mavs tied themselves up from making any major trade by giving up first rounders until Doncic's grandkids are born.
Best bet is to tank it out for the rest of the year, maintain their 2019 first and add Rui/Barrett/Reddish in between Luka & Staps.

Porzingas will be guarding on the perimeter?

They don't have their 2019 first unless they get super lucky in the lottery.
Best things Mavs can do is trade Barnes / Powell for either expiring contracts or even money and a pick or two.

Gasol is no longer the defender he used to be and we all know Doncic's shortcomings at that end. That leaves... Porzingis. Good luck :lol

Agree. This is such an underrated aspect of championship teams as well. 2 or 3 guys dont win titles by themselves. Teams win. But in the media’s star-driven culture a lot of good contributors unfortunately get overlooked.
Luka, Marc, KP would be a THICK core on offense, tho as mentioned serious defensive shortcomings. But without a good supporting cast around them? No chance at a title.

Not yet (Luka and KP are still too young and inexperienced), but in another 2-3 years I would say definitely, especially since the Warriors dynasty will be coming to a close by then so other teams will actually have a chance to win.
Gasol's production won't be as great as it once was since he's in his mid 30s now but he'd be a solid veteran presence to help the young guys grow.

It is yet to be seen if Gasol can remain focused and engaged for an entire season. Love the guy, but he's got some Pau in him that's for sure. He does deserve a change of scenery and a chance, though.
