A man running on a popular park trail in the mountains of northern Colorado killed a mountain lion after it pounced on him from behind.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officials say the man sustained serious injuries after he was bitten on his face and wrist by the young male lion.
The man, who has not been named, turned after hearing a noise behind him, just as the lion lunged, officials say.
The cat died from suffocation, state wildlife officials have determined.
Monday afternoon's attack occurred on the West Ridge Trail at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space near the city of Fort Collins - about 66 miles (106km) from Denver.
The victim "described hearing something behind him on the trail and was attacked by a mountain lion as he turned around to investigate," according to an official statement.
"The lion lunged at the runner, biting his face and wrist. He was able to fight and break free from the lion, killing the lion in self-defence."
After killing the predator, the man was able to leave the park on his own and call for help.
In a statement, officials the described the wounds to his face, wrist, arms, legs and back as "serious, but non-life threatening".
https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/485/socialembed/https://twitter.com/CPW_NE/status/1092794804658876417~/news/world-us-canada-47136308
Officials later found the dead lion, which was determined to be a juvenile male weighing around 80lbs (36kg).
"The runner did everything he could to save his life," said Mark Leslie, CPW's Northeast Region manager, who did not say exactly how the runner killed the animal.
"In the event of a lion attack, you need to do anything in your power to fight back just as this gentleman did."
Cougars, also known as mountain lions, panthers or pumas, are members of the wild cat family. They live across the Americas, from British Columbia to Argentina.
Mountain lion attacks in North America are very rare, officials say, with fewer than 20 happening in the past 100 years.
Instances of attacks are often seen among sick or starving lions, which normally are elusive and tend to avoid humans. The animal in Monday's attack has been taken to a nearby lab for a post-mortem examination to be performed.
The Horsetooth Mountain Open Space is a popular hiking spot outside Fort Collins
If you ever seen a big cat, authorities say not to run, since that may trigger the lion's hunting reflexes.
"Running may stimulate a lion's instinct to chase and attack," the park service said.
Instead people should stand firm and make an effort to look larger, and if attacked, fight back using any weapon at hand.
"What you want to do is convince the lion you are not prey and that you may in fact be a danger to the lion," officials said in a statement.
"People have fought back with rocks, sticks, caps or jackets, garden tools and their bare hands successfully," the park statement read, adding that sensitive areas such as the eyes should be targeted first.
Last May, two cyclists in Washington state were killed by what authorities described as an "emaciated" cougar.
In September 2018, a hiker in Oregon was found dead in what officials suspect was the state's first ever fatality caused by a wild mountain lion.

Damn. I was just having a conversation yesterday with my stepfather about whether or not the average grown unarmed man could kill a 40 pound coyote.
An 80 pound mountain lion? That's incredible. I wonder exactly how it played out. They usually go straight for the neck.

House cats for their size are decently strong, at least their back legs...I wish this was on video because I really don't understand how he SUFFOCATED the damn thing with his bare hands while not getting gouged to the point of bleeding to death at the scene. Even a starving, weak big cat can **** you up with those back legs...He did recieve serious injuries, but was able to walk out of the park. :biggums:

I knew a guy bird hunting , and the lion attacked , he shot it from 5 feet away.
I shot a mountain lion on a hunt , and when it was skinned it was all muscle , a true killing machine.
Ate it and it was delicious.

He has to be a big dude. I don't see any other way.
I don't think a person my size could do it. That creature is too well-suited to kill.
But if I was the size of Steven Adams, I think I could get out of there with just some scars. He could probably slam an 80 pound cat into the ground and break its spine.

Yeah he'd have to at least be heavy af, and decently strong. If it's not a Lesnar sized, to Steven Adams sized guy I'd be surprised. I definitely don't see myself managing that, maybe I'd kill it but I'd die in the process :lol
Should bring back Shaq versus but an extreme edition haha. I'll never forget this video on FB that I can't find anywhere of Shaq visiting a Zoo with a Gorrila getting pretty pissed off/nervous as soon as he saw him. Definitely never saw a human that big. "They brought alpha human to challenge me!?"

poor animal. we are destroying its habitats.
Mule deer populations in Colorado are down because of chronic wasting disease. And elk populations are just over a tenth of what they used to be. But whitetail populations are booming. The main prey of cougars is deer and probably rabbits. There are more deer and rabbits in the US now than there was before European settlers arrived. Also populations of deer are more concentrated, making it easier for cougars to get a successful kill.

He did choke it out. He just didn't let go like they do in MMA. How else could he have suffocated it?
Could he have covered the cougars mouth and nose from behind? Seems more unlikely than a choke hold. Maybe he could have gotten on top of it and the cat couldn't get up, then smothered it.
Even though the cougar wasn't an adult it is still amazing he was able to kill it with his bare hands. Wow

Where do you draw the boundary for animals you think you could prevail against?
How many of you believe you could even kill a bobcat?
How big would a grizzly cub have to get before you think you couldn't kill it?
Any of you think you could lose to a dog?

Depends on the type of dog, most breads can be seriously injured by spreading their legs apart if I'm not mistaken...But if you're dealing with a pit Idk if I want to risk getting bit in order to pull that off lol. I'd try my best to get the dog to get a hold of piece of clothing first, keep moving so he stays latched to that hopefully, and maybe get a choke hold on him while using my body weight...But those dogs are strong AF. I always carry a baton on me, but idk if it's going to do much to those cute mother ****ers.
There's no animal you mentioned that I can kill getting unscathed from. It's like a fight with someone, you have to not be afraid of getting hit, but when you're dealing with something with instruments made to kill unlike us it's tough to say. A bit of luck would have to be involved, I'm not a big of a guy as I'm only 5'8.5 185 pounds. So MY best bet might be to just kick and try to keep away
A bobcat I'd feel a LITTLE more confident with, they're ambush predators, not straight up fighters like a Pitt would be. So if I had time to react I'd like my chances more so... but I'd still get ****ED up and possibly bleed to death in the process.
Side note Bobcats are ****ing adorable, they're basically giant outside ally cats lmao

It must feel GREAT for them rubbing their head on things, other than marking their scent. There's a way you can rub your cats cheeks that will make them do this yawning like motion with their mouth which is pretty funny. Works on every cat...Wouldn't try it on a bobcat though :lol

Just for reference , 6 bear dogs can put a big hurt on a black bear, but that is a different story. Never ever trust any bears , black bears run first then plan out right kill. If sow and cub , your life is in risk 100%....

Not sure, no. I would be terrified and might die. But I think if it came down to me or the dog, I'm gauging its eyes or tearing its ears off or crushing its neck or snapping a leg or, if it's not neutered, ripping off a pair of balls. And I think I would lose a hand and probably never be as pretty again. But that's just what I think. The pit would be more interested in finding out than I ever would.

no. there is nothing a human is doing against an animal that size. literally nothing, you might as well be made of tissues.
and even on the smaller cat, its almost certainly not gonna be a rnc. that would require putting your face right next to its face... and it's quicker than you by a vast degree. Would be a great way to wind up with your neck in its mouth.
The more i think about this, the more i can picture how it could work. Cats usually go for the neck, but this guy turned around before it got to him. He pulls back and extends an arm as a shield - onto which the jaws of the cat latch. front and back paws catch him on the other arm, chest, face, etc, but in this quick struggle with the bite on his arm instead of neck, he uses the fact that it's attached to his arm to pin it down (against the meeting point of the ground with either a tree or a big rock, using the kind of leverage that mma fighters use when they are grappling against the cage). With the one forearm/elbow in the cats mouth, and his other hand gripping its throat, he drives all his weight into its mouth and neck until it is suffocated. This whole time he's gonna have claws in his arms, but fight or flight should block out that pain as he realizes he's fighting for his life. In this way I can see a man using his superior mass and intelligence to kill the 80 pound cat.

Well, the good thing about this story is that it showed a few anti-Wilt idiots that strongly resisted the idea of him having done it that it can actually be done. And it didn't even take a 7-1, 300+ beast of a man or a martial art legend to do it. And, iirc, Wilt didn't even claim that he killed it, just that he managed to take it off him and threw it in the bushes.

Someone asked me about my scar. I refer to it as my birthmark. On my eighth birthday, my father brought me a fat little bulldog. I named him Prince Henry Stout. He was strong. He chased my pet turkey, he chased squirrels up the tree, he chased everything. I raised him, I trained him, I groomed him, I fed him, I took care of him. I loved that dog; more anything in the world, I loved that dog. Then my father gave me a handful of cherry bombs and M-80s. He said: "You're gonna train this dog to be a protector". So, every Saturday afternoon, I got behind a little dummy that my dad built. I tossed cherry bombs and M-80s at the dog - BOOM, BOOM! The dog was scared at first, but after awhile he got angry and charged the dummy.
He ripped it apart. The head was off, the shirt was gone... So, thirteen years old, birthday time. My father got me a twelve-gauge shotgun. "We're going hunting!" I was so excited. We went out to this clearing in the woods where my dad laid his gun down, then took my gun and laid it down. He said: "Son, today you're gonna learn to control your emotions. You're gonna do things that some men are unwilling and *unable* to do. Follow me". My dad and I passed through this grove of trees, to where he'd built a corral. There was Prince Henry Stout chained in the middle of the corral. My dad took out a pocketful of cherry bombs and put them in my hand. He said: "Get in the corral. Here's a Bic; I want you to light those cherry bombs and throw them at the Prince. You're gonna face manhood. You're gonna fight that dog to the death. Either he's gonna kill you, or you're gonna kill him... NOW!"
I threw one cherry and he was on me, like flies on shit. I had one chance - I got my arm up in between his teeth and my neck. Then we were down in the mud, rolling over and over. That dog was baying and snarling and biting, while I was crying and screaming. I grabbed him and stood up, then fell on him with all my weight. I heard his neck break. He was dead, not biting, not even breathing. I was covered with blood. I stood up, wiped the blood off, and licked it. Then my dad said: "Welcome to manhood!" And that's how I got my birth mark.

Wildlife officials just released the postmortem details on the cat....or kitten
Apparently it was only estimated to be 35-40 lbs but weighed only 24 lbs by the time they got to it because it's starving siblings had come across the corpse first and had consumed a large portion of the body. The siblings were later captured and relocated. They were only a few months old and around 40 lbs. Since the cats were starving it likely did attack the man though.
So it was a 40 lb cat. How much does that shrink the size of the guy's balls? :oldlol:
Ruins the hell out of a kick ass story :(

a starving 40 lb cat could still potentially kill you... theyre trained to sneak up & slice the jug or carotid, the guy not wearing earphones probably saved him.
