View Full Version : Buying my first car soon, some advice would be the bees knees

So as the title says I'm buying my first car soon, know how to drive but funny enough at age 27 I don't have a license just yet. I want something relatively cheap, but yet I don't want something that looks like ass...These are some cars I'm looking at. What would the fam go with? Any of these look like a really good deal?

These are more than I was intending to spend

I have the money to pay for all of these upfront in cash, but I've heard if I can get interest around 2% it might be worth getting a loan/lease.

Some Audi's are built like tanks and have excellent steering when you decide to maximize that V8 power. Like any foreign car, you'll have to provide ample maintenance which could set you back some money.

The sexiness of the car matters too. You have to like what you drive. You have to like looking at it.

i would steer clear of the bimmer, or any car that will be expensive to fix. high mileage bmw's are a pain in the ass, sh1t will break and you're going to pay a lot to fix it.

look up each of those cars for reliability and cost to own(maintenance and repair).

I used to like black vehicles too, I even bought a couple of shiny new ones. Then it became a pita to keep them clean, and I was in dismay every time a scuff or a scratch appeared on them. :oldlol:

Pretty much. Took it at my HS, but my dad wouldn't support me getting my license until I took drivers ed again, and then drove with him for a long ass time after that. Could buy a car but can't get insurance without a license, and I couldn't take the test without a car that's insured. Live in a very good area for public transport so it hasn't sucked TOO much, so I put it off.But I'm sick of it and found a way around that without having to go through drivers ed again. Was too focused on smoking, and getting laid to save up enough to get a car for the longest time lol. A buddy is going to be listed as the primary driver on the insurance to help me, then take his name off as soon as I get my license

Good question lmao. Uber, train, or I had them pick me up. Had one girl so hooked she drove from the south burbs of Chicago, all the way to the northern burbs where I'm at to pick me up. Either to go back to her place, or rent a hotel :lol

Benefits of being decent looking, I feel horrible for guys who aren't and dont get away with the same shit I do. I can be funny, a good listener, and am smooth sometimes on accident...But otherwise if it wasn't for my face I would've been ****ed :lol

I don't think I'm hot shit though, amazes me to this day I've been with as many as I have. I was a awkward hermit growing up so I beat my own expectations

yeah i'd avoid each and every one of those cars.

Audi A8 and BMW 7 series? With that type of mileage you damn well know you are going to need to suspension work in the near future. That will cost 50% of what you are going to pay for the car. Go price out brakes and tires for one of those things while you are at it.

Run away from any high mileage german car ESPECIALLY the flagship ones. They are cheap for a reason. They are absolute money pits, and there are no aftermarket parts. If something breaks everything has to be purchased from a dealer. You will absolutely regret it.

Caddies are just GM garbage. At least they won't cost a fortune to maintain though.

You got champagne taste on a beer budget.

5-10k and you want an A8 :oldlol:

Had a girl a few months back before uber changed it(I think) pay for my uber to go to her. Like she ordered it and everything, and didn't ask for me to pay back. Just got a cellphone again for the first time in about a year if not a little longer.

I don't remember you being ugly, maybe you're not George Clooney to women...But a good haircut if you still got a decent amount, and a suit, sports jacket Jean combo etc etc does wonders. Plus how you carry yourself can make or break you...I can still be awkward, so most of my luck comes from building up familiarity with someone online through a dating site. I can't go to a bar and just pick up women because I dont know what to talk about...But if I know things they're interested in beforehand I'm good.

I got my first real job at 23, which is the one I got fired at recently. You misread my post about losing it, had that gig for years. Was going to be running overnight garden recovery as the main forklift driver, managing other people. Nothing to brag about but I worked hard. Sounds like you have some severe depression that is fueled further by drug and alcohol usage.

You need to see a psychiatrist and stop drinking.

I had about 10 jobs by the time I was 23 and a car at 16.

Your face is too pretty for you to be such a loser.

Don't buy a used premium car, because they're in your range. They're not relatively cheap if that's what you're looking for, they're expensive AF to maintain.

Buy a Honda, Mitsubishi etc.

You're 27 without a driving history, your age will offset the higher insurance and being married would also help.

What's your budget?
Where do you live?
Is AWD mandatory?
How far do you travel?
What's your salary?

Leasing a car is also what I'd recommend. Brand new car every 3-5 years, option to buy the car or walk away, lower or no down payment, free maintenance and car washes. If you own the car, high interest rates can be an issue with bad credit but you'll have an asset.

The Honda Accord 2018-2019 is gorgeous inside out. Looks like a BMW at night. Aggressive. The Honda Civic 2018-2019 is pretty good looking.

Toyota Camry 2018-2019 is also nice, come in V6.

I wouldn't go German (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) unless you're making $60k or more. Maintenance would make your experience bad and bank account even worst.

If you're considering luxury on a budget, Acura, Lexus.

I've got 10k set aside for a car, can pull more selling stock but I was hoping to spend 5-10.

A suburb that boarders the north side of Chicago

4WD is nice but not necessary

At most I'll be driving to my gym 4-6 miles away before I get more experience. It'll be a straight line at 2AM so I'll be good despite the rust lol.

Atm Jobless. Got fired recently, getting a car to expand my options searching. Or to not have to order a uber if it rains if the job happens to be within walking distance like my old one. Just waiting for my system to be clean from smoking. Should be good getting tested soon

if I was you I would be looking at ~10 year old toyota and honda sedans. you should be able to find a decent one of these cars for 5k or less. these cars will pretty much run forever if properly maintained, so mileage doesnt really matter that much as long as you get one with a good service history. if you want something a little more fancy you can also look at lexus or acura, they also tend to be extremely reliable, and on the rare occasion that they do break it costs a fraction of what you would spend to repair an equivalent bmw or mercedes.

if you end up going with honda/acura try to get one with a manual, their automatics werent the greatest during the 2000s.

get a subaru impreza or a legacy if you want the awd. I'd look at accords, civics, mazda 3s, or 6s, camrys, corollas, etc. You can get a decent example of any of those cars in your price range and those cars are very reliable.

None of those cars will impress your friends. But none of them are bad financial decisions.

Yeah, I was wondering; you were somewhat caught in a catch 22 early on. Sounds good, though. Hope you're able to get a good deal.

Don't sell stock. Stick to your budget, the low end of your budget. Set aside what remains for gas, insurance, upkeep to get you through til you have a stream of income again.

You don't have a job, and you're looking to spend more money?

Until you find a job and understand what your traveling distance would be how would you know whether this big financial decision is worth it or not?

Is there public transportation where you live? How do you normally go to work?

I'd go honda anything. But not the v6. Go for the 4 cylinder, less expensive for gas.

If you're looking at civics during that year, I'd recommend the Honda over Toyota. Better looking visually, however, the Toyota will overall be more reliable. Toyota and Lexus being the most reliable brand in the market.

You have a nice amount of money for a lease though. As someone mentioned, you can even go bmw for leasing but their entry level cars start at $40k and your lease payments would be upwards of $350-400. Then you need gas money and insurance which will be fully covered on that vehicle, you're looking at paying upwards of $600 a month easily for German. I wouldn't recommend it but until you have the money and stable job, maybe. Combined, my wife and I make around $80k and I still wouldn't opt into a German car.

I'd also like to recommend subaru wrx, they'll last long and may need some repairs off the back when obtaining due to the beating up from previous owners, but it'll come in AWD (AWD is better for snow, 4WD is for offroading).

All in all, I wouldn't advise getting a vehicle without a job TO find a job.

Until you have one, then maybe revisit this thread.

Miata is also solid as **** if you can drop $5000 on a decent milage one.

Edit: Look at Acura RSX/TSX/TL models. See if you like them.

Atm Jobless.

i would get that problem fixed first before getting a car.

if you say you need a car to help you get a job, you know that's just an excuse. no, you don't.

I don't need a car to get a job, but it opens up my options as far as the distance of places I can apply to. I live in a decent area for public transport, but I'd just rather not stand around waiting for a bus, train etc dropping money on that when the whether is shit in Chicago. Especially once it starts raining. It didn't matter when I worked outside, but now? Would rather avoid it. Or even paying uber every day... Depending where I go that could end up costing as much as insurance on the car per month.

I think the main thing is I'm being impatient since it's been 10 years since I took drivers ed at my HS, and I'm turning 28 next month

Leasing a car is the worst thing you could ever advise. You ALWAYS have a car payment. How stupid is that?

You buy a car that has longevity and make your payments or pay in cash and then once you're done...you own the car and as long as it's still good, guess what? No more car payments and you can do other things with that money...save it, invest it or spend it on other things.

Leasing is what you do when you're rich and have nothing better to do with your money.

i would steer clear of the bimmer, or any car that will be expensive to fix. high mileage bmw's are a pain in the ass, sh1t will break and you're going to pay a lot to fix it.

look up each of those cars for reliability and cost to own(maintenance and repair).

This.

Check out consumerreports for the best deals.

Buy subaru, honda or toyota.

Or a Ford 150 for a good price. Those are badass. :lol

if I was you I would be looking at ~10 year old toyota and honda sedans. you should be able to find a decent one of these cars for 5k or less. these cars will pretty much run forever if properly maintained, so mileage doesnt really matter that much as long as you get one with a good service history. if you want something a little more fancy you can also look at lexus or acura, they also tend to be extremely reliable, and on the rare occasion that they do break it costs a fraction of what you would spend to repair an equivalent bmw or mercedes.

if you end up going with honda/acura try to get one with a manual, their automatics werent the greatest during the 2000s.

This is good advice.

Draz buying brand new cars? wtf? Rich daddy?

Fuuuuuuck just took an uber to my 24/7 gym but forgot my wallet that has the key card to let me in...Debating waiting until someone shows up, or just going home and go tomorrow. It's 3:18AM here so idk if it's worth waiting :lol. Would love to have a car right about now so I could just quickly drive back. Thought I didn't take it out of my gym bag from the other day, whoops

the main and only reason i'm telling you to hold off right now is because you have no cash flow at the moment and owning a car is an ongoing financial liability. i don't think you fully realize just how much more you'll have to pay once you have obtained a vehicle.

so don't think that you have X-amount saved up, so you can afford a car that costs X-amount. when you see a car selling for 10K, that's only the initial price, man. but then there are ongoing costs that you have to pay every month for owning it. and some months will cost more than others depending on what problems come up. do you really want to think about insurance, maintenance fees, gas, shit to fix or replace, etc while having no monthly income? i will answer for you. of course not.

so get some income first. then get your wheels.

sure, nobody wants to be out in the rain, or in your case, snow, while waiting for public transportation, but that's what you gotta do right now. if you have to wake up earlier or dress like an eskimo, that's what you gotta do.

also, the age thing is not critical nor even that relevant. it's not like having some near expiration date for a woman wanting to have a baby. you can wait. i mean, if you've managed to not have a car for 27 years, i'd say you're pretty adapted to public transportation and you already know how to get around fine.

That's some good advice. Especially if you don't have friends who can fix your car or you can do it yourself. Also don't know about the US, but I have a tiny car(don't need anything else) and I pay 100-150
