Title.
Lately I have been fascinated with the French Revolution. Everything from the radical energy of mid 1789 to the terror of 1794... so many important things went down in those years, the effects of which have rippled throughout governments ever since...
Also (and this is probably the most common answer anyway) I can't get enough of any information about World War II.

definitely the roman empire. they provided so much structure to the modern western world. everything ranging from politics to things like concrete advances - did you know they discovered how to make cement less prone to cracking by adding horse hair into the concrete? adding volcanic ash to concrete allowed it to set underwater. collosseum is still standing to date, and it has concrete parts.
the modern world relies on concrete more than ever: skyscrapers, bridges, dams, etc.

Like you said, it's the easy answer but...one of my good friends was born and raised in Germany and his parents had a copy of the Communist Manifesto and I haven't been able to get enough of that entire idea and time since.

Ancient Greece and ancient Rome
Ancient Greece gave us science, philosophy, politics, history.
There were so many groundbreaking developments in any area you can think of.
The fascinating nature of the Spartan society.
The development of democracy in Athens.
Legendary conflicts such as the Greco-Persian wars, Peleponnesian war, unification of Greece under Macedon, conquest of Persia.
Then there is Rome.
Romans were so adept at incorporating different cultures and technologies.
Their military organisation was unparalleled.
The demise of the republic.
With its various causes ranging from the immense corruption and bribery prevalent at all levels. The centralisation of power and legitimization of violence.
Tensions between aristocratic privilege on one end and radical populism on the other.
Countless fascinating figures, Scipio, Marius, Sulla, Caesar, Pompey, Cato, Cicero, Augustus...
The legacy of Roman law, republican constitution, Roman infrastructure, the origin of christianity...
