View Full Version : Has a superstar ever fallen quicker than Carmelo?

2016-17: Melo was still an all-star caliber player, putting up averages of 22.4 ppg/6 rpg/3 apg on 43.3%

2017-18: Melo gets traded to the Thunder and puts up the worst numbers of his career. 16/6 on a horrible 40% shooting. He was even worse in the playoffs

2018-19: Had 2-3 good games for the Rockets. The rest of the games he played terrible. The Rockets cut ties with him after 10 games, then he gets traded to the Bulls only to get cut again.

And now no team really wants to sign him. Even the Lakers aren't sure they want him. Guy goes from being an all-star just 2 years ago, to not even being wanted on a roster.

What's the problem? Is he really that bad? I know he's a scrub level but is he not even capable of being an NBA level player? I don't see why teams can't use him, even on an auxiliary level.

From what little I understand, he won't accept that role. That makes him pretty much useless to NBA teams.

Only by numbers, not by impact. The average fan simply doesnt know the difference.

Melo was never a top player by impact. He was a high draft pick who took a lot of shots, so he carried name recognition and most casuals including ones on this board thought it meant something. When in truth it never did. He was never an actual player of much consequence.

Truth is Melo was neither that good in 16/17 nor that bad in 17/18 and 18/19.

In 16/17 he was afforded good numbers by a deferring DRose who should have been the #1 option of the team but was a new arrival and had to live in the shadow of the 'king of NY' (also his injury history has contributed to this power distribution). Basically, DRose allowed Melo to flourish by his gravity pull and by allowing him to iso as often as he wants. But Melo was already on the wane.

After that, Melo suddenly went from #1 to #3 option for thr first time in his career, where he had to get used to getting much less touches on the ball in a very short time. Hes not a player who can shoot well while kept cold and Westbrook was the opposite of Rose, hogging the ball to infinity. So Melo's numbers dropped.

Fast forward to this year, when Melo's reputation as washed up due to his previous season was exaggerated and he was put in the worst possible environment for his game (Dantoni's uptempo), and then quickly became scapegoat for the losses of an injury stricken and undermanned Rockets team. Despite playing half of his games pretty well, while being in a completely unsuitable system.

Conclusion is that Melo has declined but neither as fast nor as badly as people say. He is still a good player now, but he was not a great player in 2016/17.

I thought 2013 was the last year of Melo's superstardom. After that, it was like watching a sinking ship. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. NONE.
