View Full Version : Why does Larry Bird get a pass?

In 1981 Larry Bird won a ring and Cedric Maxwell was the FMVP because Bird shit the bed.

Bird put up 15.3 ppg on 42% shooting but no one talks about it.

His ppg were low because of two games they took 29 and 35 point leads and he stopped shooting. This has been explained a dozen times.

I saw 43 mpg and the obvious 42% FG

That series has been discussed on here quite frequently. Bird does get a pass though for several pedestrian to mediocre playoff performances he had in his career, including many losses with HCA

When you have 8/13/10 with 5 steals and 2 blocks and take a 30 point lead do you get an extra ring for stat padding late? When you have 12/12/8 and lead by 35 would demanding the ball late to add ppg do anything of any use?

What purpose would more points serve exactly?

Said it before and I'll say it again. Bird was the best player in the series. Maxwell also had 2 low scoring games that no one talks about. Bird had 2 8 point games Maxwell had games of 10 and 6. 16 point for both but no one talks about Maxwell's. Check out rebounds, assist and steals then get back to me.

Please talk to someone who watched the games and find someone who thinks Bird wasn't the best player. Box scores don't tell the whole story.

So since my last post not one person has commented on Maxwell's games of 6 and 10 points. also I referred to rbs, assist and steals. Here are those numbers.

Maxwell 57 rbs, 12 assist, 1 steal
Bird 90 rbs, 42 assist, 14 steals

I actually watched the games.

Box score historians should have their internet access taken away for life.

Love it when kids try to retroactively check the box scores of prior era games and come to asinine conclusions because of it.

Is OP implying that Bird should have stat-padded like his fraud idol?

Someone above mentioned it was his first finals and his 2nd year. What were Lebrons stats in his first finals? How about his 2nd finals in his 8th year?

But he does get a pass he is really allowed all these blunders
