View Full Version : Almost hit a pedestrian at poorly lit intersection

So I'm in Chicago right now on business. I go to make a right turn on green (was not at a complete stop at the light, the light was green as I was driving a good 100 feet before it) and I damn near hit a pedestrian who is crossing as I'm turning right with my turn signal on. I was approaching from the south turning east and he was obviously to my right coming from the south also crossing the street to head to the north side. I roll my window down about to talk some shit and I look at the cross walk and it's white with a walk sign so the pedestrian has the right of way. He just keeps walking like nothing happened. The problem is that the intersection was dark as fvck and I couldn't see shit. Not even sure how I stopped in time because I didn't see him and I even checked before turning. It was just natural alpha level instinct on my part. Time to tell Rahm Emanuel to put some goddamn street lights up before someone gets killed.

Yeah cross walks can be perplexing sometimes... why should someone be told it's safe to walk when I have a green light telling me I can also go? It's poor design.

What's even harder for me to accept is how ready some people are to let a stranger decide if they die or not. That dude crossing the street is just relying on the assumption that you're gonna be really careful about not killing him. That shit's wild. I've seen enough maniacs and drunks behind the wheel to wanna take 30 extra seconds to get wherever I'm walking so that I'm not surrendering the keys to my mortality to some random jackass.

At the end of the day, I would have been found guilty if I hit him. That's the bitch of it all. Now that I think about it if I see a car approaching alongside me from the same direction I'm heading on foot, I'm going to be very cautious crossing until I know he's not turning along my path. I sure as hell am not going to rely on him seeing me knowing I'm at a dimly lit intersection.

When it comes to cross walks, most accidents happen there, I'm always cautious with turns. Always also check your bike lanes before moving the car in any way, and, more importantly, before or while approaching the intersection double check no one is speeding or running the red light.

That shit is the worst. What trips me out about that is that if you happened to be distracted by something at all it would have been all over. And if by chance you happened to have a beer or two before hand, lord help you.

No beer for me before driving, but you are right. I dodged a bullet today.

I knew a guy who fvcked up his company car with only 250 miles on it. :oldlol: When they hired him they didn't know he was an alcoholic. When they asked him about it he said he wasn't drunk. Said that he got into the accident due to having an allergic reaction to "a snack". The hiring manager goes "well wtf was the snack, a cold beer?" He was fired on the spot. Police report comes back with him clearly failing the breathalyzer at the scene. :facepalm

Are we talking 2 cans of beer or 2 tall 22oz glasses? :lol If you weight 180 pounds, and consume a maximum of a little less than four 12-ounce beers over a span of one hour, you will blow under 0.08% BAC.

So "2 beers" depending on how much is in that tall glass and the proof could put you over the legal limit. Were only talking a 4 oz difference here. That being said, if you are watching a game at a sports bar, you are likely going to drink more than 2 beers. Drink two 22 oz Great Lakes Christmas Ale's an you are blowing over a 0.1% BAC easy. That's why I always uber home and pick up my car later if I'm out and about and meet people up at Hodge's (best place to watch Cavs games hands down)

Honestly the best thing to do would be to keep a breathalyzer in your car. If you blow over the legal limit or just under, it's time to get a ride from a friend or take an uber.

Gonna have to disagree with you here, buddy. You might not feel the difference, but that doesn't mean you haven't compromised your coordination and reaction time.

I am always aware of this because I spend so much time playing musical instruments. I might have two beers and think I feel nothing, but my playing will be noticeably worse and it's frustrating.

Driving is too important. Anything else in most of our lives we can **** up and it will be okay. Driving you can ruin your life and others' lives in literally a fraction of a second.

But keep doing it plz, because you're a tough guy and no one's gonna tell you how to live.

I kinda laughed at the last line because you hit home pretty well. That

They may be bullshit but I'd keep a breathalyzer in the car. That way you know if you get pulled over you will blow under the legal limit.

Yeah I been meaning to get one for some time actually.

I would bet money that you actually drive drunk too though. Everyone I've known who says the shit you're saying also drives when they're trashed.

Well usually people turn with very low speed, especially if it's dark. So even if you hit someone, it's not that serious. At worst insurance should cover everything.

2 beers would put you at like .06 even if you were a woman. It's nowhere near enough to saturate the brain to the point of losing coordination, if anything it will temporarily boost energy levels.

Then why do I get noticeably worse at guitar and video games when I have had very little to drink (a small enough amount that I don't even feel buzzed)?

a lot of people feel the opposite in my experience... who hasnt got better at bp after a couple? it's when you go overboard that your coordination takes a downswing.

Don't get mad because you're not a capable human being.

Sure, most people should never get behind a wheel while intoxicated (like 90%). You have to know your limits and capabilities as a human being. I know for a fact that I can drive better stoned/tipsy than 99/100 people can while sober.

Edit: My aunt was killed by a drunk driver, so don't bring up any personal anecdotes of family/friends getting killed to refute my argument.

There's a difference between driving while drunk and driving while buzzed. I've driven while tipsy plenty of times and it's nothing. If anything I became more careful and drive slower than usual. I drove much worse when I didn't get enough sleep.

Your ignorance, arrogance, and hubris are pathetically foolish. Absolutely pathetic. "I can drive better tipsy than 99/100 people can sober" honestly read that back to yourself and slap yourself in the face. What makes you think you're in the 99th percentile of anything in life, let alone something like driving a car?

You've lost touch with reality.

I really hope you're under 25. If you're a full-grown adult and you still think like this, then shame on you.

This is laughable with your whole “I had two beers how can I ever drive? What about the .01% chance that someone goes into road and my supposed millisecond reduced reaction time will result in a tragedy that would have not happened regardless!” Oh how could you endanger the innocent lives!

If you want to go that route, how about if one of those times you were ganking from Walmart and some security guard actually chased your ass into the parking lot for once and a car swerves to miss you and kills a little kid. How pathetic! How arrogant! What an outrage!

Everything is dangerous depending on your perspective, if you think .08 drinking should get you sent to jail you should reexamine some of your other behaviors.

Drinking and driving aside.....I have difficulties at night with pedestrians too.

I live in a northern european city which means 90% of everyone is dressed in black from head to toe. It also rains alot. There's nothing like trying to look out for pedestrians at night, in the rain, and everyone camoflaged in black. It's like they want to get hit. Throw in some cyclist riding without lights as well. You have to be real careful.

No one increase in reaction time and skill when buzzed. What usually increase is deliberate alertness, carefulness and slower driving that more than compensates the decrease in reaction time. At least on people who has some common sense.
