Thanks for this, love reading long-form stories like this. I didn't find much more to be added to the story like ESPN claimed...their stats were very basic and gave no detailed explanation, after the author condemns the NBA for not releasing more specifics on their own study. It was a pretty well-written and enjoyable read and a good glance into all the characters involved.

The most illuminating parts were

1) Ronnie Nunn referencing James Donaghy benefiting from the new officiating that was being pushed and using a 'literal interpretation' in many instances.

2) The following excerpt:

Martino did recall Donaghy telling him that certain games would be unfixable. In Martino's words, "Blowouts, he can't control." If the score in a game widened too far beyond the betting line, Donaghy told Martino, Donaghy would be powerless to rein it back in. Because then "you gotta call a lot of fouls," Martino said. "And it's too obvious."

The idea that that refs are instructed to call more fouls in blowout situations, presumably (though not in Donaghy's cases) to give the losing team a better chance to close the gap, a sort of real-life 'NBA Jam CPU-assistance'.
