I get why he's keeping 1971 since it was his first. But I'm not sure why 1982 is closer to his heart than 1985 when he won MVP.

When you get as old as he is, knowing that the end is in a sense tomorrow, a lot of people start to sell everything. They can't take it with them.

those rings aren't worth much in gold/diamonds TBH...

https://auction.steinersports.com/ItemImages/000098/JOHNRIU000000_med.jpeg

they're made by jostens ( the same company that makes highschool rings )

i got one for 500$ back when i graduated

and theres probably 1000$ worth of diamonds in it

so the rings are worth about 1500$ brand new... the pawn shop/cash for gold value would be about 350$

only thing that makes it valuable is the fact that its kareems ring.

No way.
If he wants a job, sure somebody will get him one.
Maybe not a head coaching job, but if it is a job, he can get one for sure.

yeah but we don't wear cards around our neck

championship rings today are valuable regardless if they belonged to anyone

they're twice as big with 100's more diamonds

i was just pointing out that rings from the 60's, 70's, 80's were no better than highschool shit

now some are worth 20 grand+

Collectors don't care about how much the items are worth in "material." It's the rarity that counts.

if there was a kareem abdul jabbar jizz rag up for auction i doubt it would get more bids than his rings even though they're less rare

All the top selling sports memorabilia are game worn/used stuff /rules or that Honus Wagner card.

The record for the most expensive player championship ring is a 1990 Super Bowl Lawrence Taylor that went for $250,000.

exactly ... a championship worn jersey would bring less than half that amount

the fact that an item is made out of gold and diamonds makes it even more enticing

so one with twice the weight in gold and diamonds would do even better

brady's rings would probably go for a million each

He has no personality, and no one likes Lou Alcindor. He's a reclusive weirdo. And I was talking about media and peers being contemporaries. In the 70's, and mid 80's. Why are you white knighting for this social retard?

It's not even close to being a top 20 sport memorabilia of all time... literally none of them are championship rings.

"Rick Harrison estimates that one of Brady’s rings would easily sell for at least $250,000."

From the article

"When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple. Sell it all," Abdul-Jabbar wrote on his blog about why he's auctioning off valuables from his sports history.

"Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I'd rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future.

"That's a history that has no price."

Much of the proceeds from my auction will go to support my charity, the Skyhook Foundation, whose mission is to 'give kids a shot that can't be blocked.'

"We do this by sending children from economically challenged schools to five days in the Angeles National Forest to experience the wonders of nature and learn the basics about science, technology, and engineering."
Good for him, give the dude props for this

"Much of the proceeds from my auction will go to support my charity, the Skyhook Foundation, whose mission is to 'give kids a shot that can't be blocked.'"

Told you the dude was hurting for cash, all that charity BS is nothing but PR. A fraction of what he makes will go to charity for public perception, while he keeps the rest and use's it as a tax right off. All these celebrity "charities" / "foundations" are nothing but a way for them to launder money tax free

And to think this asshole came at Michael, saying Jordan chose commerce over social justice. Jordan is a billionaire and you have to sell your shit because you're desperate for cash, who really won here?

Someone with intelligence who can read through the BS narrative and press release spins

:applause:

And Mike donates to charity too. He just doesn't have to advertise it. Pretty sure over the summer he donated a million to like a Charlotte hospital or something. He doesn't do it for the pub like LeFaux and Alcindor here.

Same way LeBron's "charity" not a dime out of his own pocket (and Nike) built his school which conveniently finished when he was ready to bolt town again.

Yeah being conspiracy minded and a skeptic I thought this too. If he wants to help kids, great but most would want to leave a championship ring to family members or at least a museum.

LeBron should buy it , it's the only Lakers championship ring he'll ever get

No, above its materialistic value it's purely based on scarcity. There are less rings than jerseys, but I guess MJ's '98 G6 jersey, autographed with a certificate of authenticy, would sell for more than his ring.

Been living in LA most of my life. Been listening to ESPN radio religiously for years along with the Lakers programming. And one thing we die hard Laker fans know around here is that when KAJ came on for an interview, whether on radio or on TV, it was because he was always selling something. Most times, a book. He never, ever came on just to chat it up.

It's just the truth yall. Dude is going to keep most of that $$$. He needs money. Never made a ton on the court and because he's an introvert, never got his off field $$$ going. You don't sell that sh*t unless you need $$$. It's one of the last bullets he's using.

Nah, yall don't understand. KAJ is revered everywhere else but not in LA in that he's never been a personality here. Just always kept private. Magic is God around here along with Kobe. He never had the personality to be on TV or coach. So he COULDN'T get a job like that even if he wanted too. And that's another reason why he hates MJ. Because not only did MJ take the GOAT title from him but makes more $$$$ in his sleep than KAJ can ever dream of. That's why dude sells a book like every year.
