View Full Version : Another idea to reduce 3 pointers

Maybe for the first half, you're not allowed to miss 4 threes. When you miss 4 more than you've made, then 3s only count as 2s. Then for the 2nd half, you can allow regular 3 point play.

Like in baseball, you're allowed 1 replay. In basketball, you should only be allowed to shoot a certain amount of 3s. Let's limit it. But we don't want to take them away completely, so maybe in the 2nd half you should have the green light.

Every game I watch now is crazy because you have young players now with the green light who just chuck 3s whenever they can. Even centers now chuck 3s.
Pop is right. This isn't basketball. Only Curry & Klay should shoot them that often, since they invented it. But from an entertainment standpoint, all these 3s are not that fun to watch, not when every player on every team has the green light.

I agree.

Another idea OP is for there to be a pregame lottery that determines which players will be allowed to shoot a three pointer for that nights (or days) game.

Not only will it reduce the obnoxious number of three pointers that we're seeing in this era, but it will make each game different and more creative, because every lottery will be different, and thus different strategies for each game.

What would be the game plan if say only Cousins can shoot threes, but Steph no? The possibilities are endless.

The answer is simple. You introduce a 4-point line as well.

Push the line further out to 25 feet and call it a day. Unfortunately the can of worms has been opened and the only way to re-balance is to make the 3 more 'earned' again by making it a tougher shot.

1. 3ptas missed within first 14 secs of shot clock are automatic TOs*
2. Players fouled while shooting 3s get to shoot 3rd FT only if they make 1st two.

* excluding last 2 minutes of 4th/OT
