View Full Version : Adam Silver on mental health in NBA: A lot of these young men are generally unhappy

“When I meet with them, what surprises me is that they're truly unhappy," Silver said, according to Boston.com's Nicole Yang. "A lot of these young men are generally unhappy."
Silver added, "We are living in a time of anxiety," according to ESPN. "I think it's a direct result of social media."
Silver suggested it's a generational issue that's not limited to athletes. Arguing that Jordan-era teams benefited from more camaraderie, he quoted Isiah Thomas: "Championships are won on the bus." Now, Silver pointed out, players are always wearing headphones.
"(Players) are isolated, and they have their heads down," the 56-year-old said, according to Yang.
The NBPA launched a new mental health and wellness program in May 2018 to assist players with mental health challenges and issues. Over the past year, stars Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan have spoken publicly about their own battles with depression and anxiety.

Yeah, imagine not heaving a steady home, not being able to have a family, because no woman will put up with your rockstar lifestyle, while being permanently under pressure, because some fool, who can't put up a lay up on an open basket will burn you on twitter, if you miss a guarded 28 footer buzzer in january. Imagine that not making you happy. Money isn't evrything.
Also Imagine a place you like and then you get traded along the 130 million dollar superstar, because some dude on another team wants that guy and you have to be packaged with him to make salaries match.

Dating and having a functioning family are two different things.
Of course, but they won't find a better job and won't be free either, so they won't quit. Doesn't mean they have to be happy.

Lots of people in high paying jobs have depression. Everyone in my family is a millionaire and they're all depressed/alcoholics. My dad is the only one that isn't ****ed up, and he basically figured out a daily routine and sleep-walked through every part of his non-work life for 20+ years. At the same thing for breakfast every day. Exercised at the same times every week. Almost every weekend spent in the same way.
Money isn't everything. Lots of factors go into fulfillment.

The salary levels in professional sports are directly opposed to the level of spiritual fulfillment of society.
You think some of these athletes sometimes don't stop to ponder "wait what, why am I getting paid hundreds of millions to play a sport"?
Maybe even some of the wokest see through the bs and that they're tool of propaganda for a hostile elite.
Bread and Circus.
They're the circus. Just so happens is so ****ed up, that they need to pay their circus artists 30 million dollar a year to hide the fact that the 1% own the 99%.

there's much more to life... like real relationships.
you are missing the fact that the only reason these guys can't have "real relationships" is due to their lack of self-control and discipline. There's nothing preventing them from doing it. If they didn't have money they would be in prison and be more "depressed"
look at Tom Brady or someone like Shane Battier or Grant Hill

I don't buy it
They seem generally unhappy because they're meeting with some bald geek pretending he cares about them.
Most of these guys are happier and more fulfilled than 99% of the population.. and I guarantee that
Being a part of a sports team alone fosters happiness... getting paid to travel, hang out with your friends, and play basketball while getting social media clout fosters extreme happiness/fulfillment
There's a reason it's hard for them to step away.... and it's not just basketball. Like Ray Allen said, what he missed most was the brotherhood and commodore

you're naming older guys who grew up without the internet. People arent being properly socialized, always buried in their phones on all their different apps. hell when you meet new people everybody wants to know your twitter, gram, snap, facebook handles and more. shits crazy.
i imagine people in the past talked to each other a lot more. instead of typing to others far away dissasociating themselves from their environment.

It's all relative, in comparison to NBA players of the past, today's players are probably less happy.
It's the product of the internet, and it affects most people. Specially younger ones who didn't grow up with it. The constant search for stimulation is a waste of life.
I remember watching a sitcom back in the 90s, looking at the clock, knowing that it's 30 minutes long, and not wanting it to end. That was very comfortable, with zero rush. Now if I go on to YouTube, I'll start watching a video, pause it, check out ISH, watch another video, pause it, etc. Pure boredom in search of stimulation. So many more options, but less enjoyable. More stress. You can't simply flip a switch and just watch a show like in the 90s.
People also tend to get used to their circumstances. Kyrie looks unhappy, things are not quite going his way. Yet if you suddenly give his life circumstances and status to someone who has been struggling for decades (not a teenager or early 20s person who will not appreciate it as much and party it away), they will be the happiest person in the world.

Man oh man this is the truth. I miss that feeling of pure relaxation, just knowing you're set for half an hour and staying focused on the show.
The sad part of this age is I'm totally aware that the internet has destroyed me, and that history shows I'm capable of living differently (I didn't have the internet til jr. high), but by and large, I don't change.
My biggest question is is this 'stimulation anxiety' caused from too many choices and the feeling you might be missing out on something better? Or is it something less simple?

It's not just NBA players. It's modern society in general.
Correct.
And it's not just social media. It's being tethered to each other and the internet in general 24/7/365.
Cell phones, and specifically smart phones coupled with texting, are one of the greatest inventions in human history... and one of the worst.
Social media isn't the big culprit. Our brains ARE LITERALLY being re-wired to expect instant, at will gratification AT ANY MOMENT'S NOTICE because we carry around in our pockets a vast array of information.
And even as we're more "interconnected" than ever, we as a species have never been further apart within our own communities.
https://www.amazon.com/Alone-Together-Expect-Technology-Other/dp/0465093655/
https://www.amazon.com/Glow-Kids-Screen-Addiction-Hijacking/dp/1250146550/
I highly recommend these two books to anyone struggling with anything tech related or any unexplained mental struggles. I also recommend the second one especially for anyone raising their kids by pacifying them with a tablet or phone.
I am, unfortunately and fortunately, about 20 years ahead of most people on this subject... because I became plugged into the net in roughly 1992 at 9 years old and have been heavily plugged in almost ever since(took a year long break roughly and it was the most peaceful time of my adult life). I was carrying around smartphones before people even knew what they were.
Technology is completely destroying our communities, socially speaking. I'm not exaggerating or being dramatic. It's happening. And there's no going back.

Why are people so scared to, you know, just not use social media? Ive never had social media accounts, i dont watch tv, don't even pay for internet (other than this phone) and I'm mentally better off than 99% of this planet.
And you know what? Im fulfilled. Im not rich (not even close), but im self sufficient, stay healthy, have my AC at home, my bed, my video games, basketball ( i play in real life) and my weed and I'm happy. Every day is an opportunity, I like associating with all kinds of peoples. In person.
When you have your basic needs met and and you realize Just existing is fulfilling enough in and of itself, you're good man...
The main.thing is I have rooted out all sources of stress in my life (literaly no worries beyond basic bills). Stress is the biggest killer. Also you can (should) never care what another human thinks about you, like, at all.

LeBron tried to help young men by giving them something to cheer for because they were so fvcking depressed that they missed seeing GOAT MJ and some even missed Kobe's prime. All their lives they've been told what a great experience it was and how every other viewing experience in the NBA has been absolute shit by comparison. (and it has) LeBron gave these sorry sons of bitches hope. They try to come on ISH and feel happiness about him ONLY losing 6 finals and people like 3ball shit all over their hopes and dreams by making them feel like nothing because he reminds them constantly how inferior their viewing experience is compared to the viewing experience of watching GOAT MJ. They spend months trying to make a house of cards and 3ball just blows it down effortlessly causing them to go into a deep state of depression. It's not fair for them and no one even trolls them anymore because it's too easy. Safe spaces are becoming more and more scarce for them. What once was a safe space at ISH is no longer. Can anything be done to help these sorry bastards?

Nah, he believes it. People really believe that excessive amounts of money and fame and bitches = automatic happiness. And that's because it is... for a short while... until the existential dread sets in you're right back to square one.
BTW, nobody can escape the challenges of life... but day to day? moment to moment? Relatively speaking, and not as an absolute? Happiness is a choice.
