One of the things that made the All-Star game special back in the day is you didn't see these stars outside of your market play everyday, but now with the internet, highlights uploaded on youtube in 10 minutes, social media etc. it just isn't as special.

They should try USA vs. the World, the international talent is really getting close and it's only going to keep closing the gap vs. a glorified pickup game that they've been trying.

The US players will want to prove we're still the best, and the international players will want to prove they're right there.

It would also really strike home that basketball is a more globalized sport than the other big American sports.

Agreed. Also pay the winning players something. Doesn't have to be a lot. Just enough for extra motivation.

These guys make so much money in order for it to make a difference to them you'd have to probably make it financially unfeasible for the league.

Yeah, but if you made it like a bet, then it's more an ego thing. Maybe the losing team has to pay the winning team.

Just give the players a few days off and scrap the whole thing tbh

Too much monetary incentive to do this, particularly in the hosting city.

Totally agree....and we all know about Silver....

As long as serious injury remains a concern (and it always will) youll never see really competitive all star games again.

Teams invest too much in these players, and players themselves invest too much in their brands (which rely on them being on the court) for anybody to want to risk a serious injury during a meaningless game with absolutely nothing on the line.

They will continue to be glorified games of horse until the final 8 minutes of the 4th quarter, when basic competitive pride starts to creep in. That’s the way the league is now. It’s nobody’s fault and there’s no good solution.

Time to accept it.

Fri: go back to rookies v sophs.. celebrity game is meh but who cares

Sat: Skills is fine, and the 3 point, but get some actual all stars for the dunk comp.

Sun: maybe try OPs idea of Usa vs the world.

It's just a bit of fun, I'm not sure you can do much more with it

the best way for it to mean something is to make the game have playoff/seeding implications.

the best way for it to mean something is to make the game have playoff/seeding implications. This is the next logical step, players have enough money now compared to 90's/2000's so they won't gaf if they get a little more. The new incentive nowadays are winning situations, which better playoff seeding can affect.

The game doesn't need to be super intense...how pissed would you be if an All-Star from your team got injured during the game and was out for the year?

There's no incentive to play hard in a game that doesn't count. And since it's never going to count for anything, there's no way to fix it. Players are gonna through the motions no matter who they're going up against. Just get rid of the game altogether. Who the heck will actually miss it? Literally nobody.

Just keep All Star Saturday. The 3pt contest and the dunk contest are still plenty fun. That should be enough.

Change it back to the old all star format. No captain's picking their own teams.

The average NBA salary was 90k at that time. Each round the prize money doubled and the winner of the tournament got 15k. I'm guessing they'd actually want to win that. Wouldn't you try for something if you knew you could make 1/6th your annual salary in a weekend?
