There's no doubt Mavs are tanking now. With the new draft rules, they already have at least 20% of keeping their top 4 protected draft pick. Just get a little bit worse record and that chance goes up to like 30-40%
How did Mavs tank?
They got rid of no-future vets DAJ, Wes, Barnes and a sometimes off/on guard in DSJ. Literally traded their entire starting lineup.
What did they get in return? An injured played in KP who would not play the rest of the season.
Then they have a completely washed legend in Dirk, who they can use to lose. More minutes = more losses. The Lakers/Kobe method.
Lastly, they have a number of so-so prospects: Brunson, DFS, Powell, Kleber, who are excellent trade bait, but not good enough to win.
Put together, the Mavs can field a team that will lose, but with enough credibility to not look obvious and enough drama (Dirk last season), to not piss off fans.
THAT is a proper "process", not the losing culture of Philly.
