View Full Version : How do you let the shooter rebound it when you KNOW he has to miss?

Its rare but its always annoyed me. If I know youre gonna miss ill get a lane violation before I let you rebound it. We can do this all day bitch.

This is unacceptable:

Lucky for them Skip missed the 3. Not so lucky when Adams/Westbrook did it.....

I'll go easy on the miracle plays. This guy threw the ball like Captain America with his shield on some "Dude...perfect" shit....

But barring someone with supersoldier level accuracy.....I might get fined if im the coach and my players let that happen. My tirade would be picked up by nearbye camera and get the FCC involved.

Some of it is on the coaches if these guys arent prepared though I guess. Like when JVG had one of the great "Called it" moments in history and said he doesnt like Bass trying to box out Kobe alone because Kobe is a great Ft rebounder vs inexperience:

If JVG knew that Avery Johnson should have. He was fired shortly....and I think hes being fired from Alabama as we speak.

So maybe its the coaches fault on some of them and guys just didnt know what was about to happen. Bad coaching does matter...but some of them? Adams turned around and told Russ he was gonna miss and throw it back to him. The commentators said it. They heard it from courtside but the players rebounding all half assed.....

Some people just prefer to roll the dice. I think I'm one of them. How many things have to go right in order for those plays to work?

Gotta brick the free throw, which is harder than it should be.
Gotta recover possession. Also random as hell.
Gotta have a shooter that can make the shot open. Probably the easiest after the chaos of a missed free throw.

That's too much randomness for me to want to give a free shot and a new possession, but I wouldn't blame someone for feeling differently.

It's like being up 3 and not fouling the shooter when they've got possession. I don't do it. I want them to make the shot, and in today's NBA, I'm afraid of a four point play. I don't like setting some one up for free throws and then a 50-50 bounce like the ones in your clips.

50% > 30-40% at best 3 pt shooter

As everybody knows though, if that goes sideways everybody will be screaming for your head because "everybody knows you foul in that situation."

I've seen enough losses in these scenarios both ways to just leave things up to fate.

As for the Brandon Bass scenario, I vaguely remember that and being pretty disgusted with it. What do you do though? Bass was not a good defensive rebounder, but Dampier was a guaranteed miss at the line if he secures the rebound.

Again, just depends what odds you want to play. I probably roll with Dampier because when he misses at least there is another roughly 50-50 chance your team can get the ball back, but yeah, everyone's much smarter when all is said and done.

Those first two are really hard to "defend". You can't box out the shooter and with that velocity you can't get into the lane in time. So a violation is the only thing you can do, but how often can you repeat that?

Ah, my fault, viewed it more from the perspective of a coaching decision as opposed to a point of pride in the players themselves.

Yeah, seems more a lack of desire and focus than anything else in most situations but the Yao/Adams bounce..........unless, I first hand see someone pulling that in practice with consistency no way am I thinking that is certain to work.
