I remember when I loved baseball when I was a teenager. It was my favorite sport. Now it's boring as **** and frustrating to watch. Frustrating to see these players get all this injuries when they stand around 75% of the time and do nothing then they go to explode off their gold ass muscles and pulling muscles and groins all day.

They don't keep themselves warm on the bench and just sit there and eat seeds and gum for half the game.

No doubt, getting a 90+ MPH baseball is one of the hardest things to do in sports, but sheesh. These contracts given out this off-season were and are a joke.

These contracts given out this off-season were and are a joke.

not really.

the market dictates pay. many mlb teams signed lucrative tv deals recently, so naturally the players will get a nice % of that. same thing happened with the nba after they signed their mega deal with cable networks.

the angels signed a $3 billion tv deal, so it makes sense that the face of the franchise/best player in the game would get a massive pay raise.

Since 1986 when it reached 36 millions viewers, World Series TV ratings have steadily declined.

Good article about baseball being dead...

Regardless of the inflated attendance figures, and the monumental local TV deals for teams like the Angels and Dodgers, this game will be little more than a niche sport by 2040 (very much like the NHL is today). It’s not extreme pessimism, just extreme realism. One needs to look no further than the ultimate bellwether of our modern society: television ratings.

For the past 30 years, national television ratings for both the Game of the Week, playoffs and World Series have been plummeting. In 1986, the Mets-Red Sox Series garnered nearly a 27 average share nationally. Game 7 alone came close to a 40 share. New York and Boston practically shut down that night. The average this century for the Series is between an 8 and 10 share. One game in 2008 received a 6.5. The inverse relationship is clear. As expanded cable television became ubiquitous, national baseball ratings dropped. Add the internet or mobile, and the choices became endless.

To be fair, the 2016 Series had some of the best ratings in years due in part to the Chicago Cubs nationwide following and there was a Game 7. Plus their opponent, the Cleveland Indians, had not won a World Series since 1948. So you had two fan bases crying out for a long-awaited victory. However, if you breakdown the ratings per game, they really were not very good. Ratings were in the teens with around 20 million viewers. Game 7 received a 21 rating with just over 40 million watching. Thirty years earlier, Game 7 between the Mets and Red Sox had over 56 million hanging on every pitch; times have changed.

The 2017 Series also went seven games and was somewhat compelling, with two extra inning games. Having the Dodgers and Astros meant that MLB got the second and fourth biggest markets in the country. But overall ratings fell slightly with Game 7 attracting just over 28 million viewers. The game was played on a Wednesday night, which never helps. Also, the average duration of the games that year was over four hours. TV sets were being turned off gradually throughout the evening. In just over fifty years, the average length of a World Series game has doubled.

Sadly, the 2018 Series stopped hope in its tracks as ratings fell 23%. It only went five games, so that could be an issue. But the Dodgers made for frustrating viewing, as they struck out with men in scoring position like it was a habit.

And yet baseball is at an all-time low in popularity.

completely irrelevant.

it's all about dollars and cents.

the angels have a $3 billion tv deal, are valued at $1.9 billion as a franchise, and bring in about $345 million in revenue every year.

now what are the angels without their players? you think fans are tuning in, buying tickets to watch the owners in their sky boxes while staring at an empty field?

the market dictates the compensation.

mlb teams are swimming in cash right now.

therefore the players are entitled to their cut of the revenue stream.

many analysts think that they actually got mike trout, who many are already proclaiming the goat, for a discounted price.

Baseball is dying and has been dying for the last 20 years if not more. Let them get their contracts. I don't care honestly. The only reason I know about the contracts is because my TheScore app shows the news breaking when they sign on my phone. Otherwise I wouldn't even know about them because I don't give a shit. :lol

Baseball is dying and has been dying for the last 20 years if not more.

if baseball is dying, someone should inform the mlb's pockets.

they somehow keep getting fatter.

MLB Sees Record Revenues Of $10.3 Billion For 2018 (https://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybrown/2019/01/07/mlb-sees-record-revenues-of-10-3-billion-for-2018/#7c2e66695bea)

the players are partners in the money-making scheme.

if the mlb is seeing record profits, then the players will see record profits.

doesn't get much simpler.

The reason they keep getting fatter is because of the media deals they make in recent years. Not because more people are watching baseball than ever, because it's the opposite. TV rating wise and attendance wise baseball is less popular now than it's been in the last 20-30 years.

The combination of the markets, media deals nad the fact that the MLB has no salary cap lets these players get paid crazy amounts of money, when compared to the NFL and NBA less people watch these games than the other two sports.

So the contracts are laughable when less people watch these games no than ever.

I can't watch every game, but I will follow along if it's close. For instance, I got the alert that it's a close game after 8 innings (cbs app) so I said WHY THE HELL NOT, and put it on and BOOM Mets big inning including one of their youngin's first monster HR

No one should have the patience to watch 9 innings every day. Unless it's a playoff game. But I can try to watch an inning or 2 often enough... so it's up to the Mets to keep my interest.

Saw that the Dodgers were up 3-1 in the 7th inning so I thought they had it won. Checked back and it was 3-3 and immediately saw the grand slam.

Was curious to see how they blew the lead and of course it was none other than Kershaw who gave up back to back HRs. Are you kidding me??? Peyton Manning, for as great a QB he was in the RS, had too many stinkers when it counted, Alex Rodriguez also had some really bad playoffs runs then he put up a few really good ones later in his careet but you're right, Kershaw is in a league of his own. Dodgers need to get rid of him, what good is your ace when he can't deliver in the clutch.

Lol so I guess I was wrong. Yankee bats have gone soft at home, so much for the mystique of Bronx. They can't hit with runners on. Twins suck so they don't count, lost both their games at home against Sox last year and now about to lose their first 2 to the Stros.

So the Astros were heavy favorites going into the WS, right?

Lost both games at home behind their two best pitchers...

As Captain Obvious would say...not good :lol

I really dislike this Astros team so Go Nats!!!

Hey Yo

"Nationals are first team to win the first two games of a World Series on the road since the 1999 Yankees. Of the last 18 teams to take a 2-0 lead, 17 went on to win the World Series (including 11 straight.)

Hey Yo

I wonder what Bryce Harper is thinking right now.
Dan Patrick and crew were wondering during the NLCS if Bryce is rooting for or against the Nats.

I don't think anyone who follows baseball would say them winning is a direct result of getting rid of Harper. I mean they did start out like 17-30 or something along those lines this season.

Tough game for Washington, ‘twas a dud for such hype back at home.

Left lots of RISP. Oh well, can’t win them all. I wanted them to keep breaking postseason records but just win the ship.

If they woulda won, it was the new record for consecutive playoff wins

maga thought the reaction to the baghdadi news would be the same as it was to osama's

they were expecting cheers for the dear leader, massive chants of U-S-A, etc

Fans attending a nationally televised Sunday Night Baseball Major League Baseball game between two National League East rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia initiated U-S-A! cheers in response to the news, confusing players and officials alike because no official announcement was made until later.[8][9] Likewise, at WWE Extreme Rules 2011, a pay-per-view broadcast emanating from the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida, newly crowned WWE Champion John Cena announced the news to the audience following the event's conclusion, resulting in a massive "U-S-A!" chant from the crowd.[10][11] Students at Ohio State University celebrated by jumping into Mirror Lake, a tradition done before playing rivals Michigan in football. Hundreds of students at the University of Notre Dame, located in Notre Dame, Indiana, spontaneously gathered and celebrated by setting off fireworks, yelling loud chants, and running through busy student centers and libraries, many screaming the entire way through and carrying American flags.[12] Students at the University of Southern California celebrated on USC's Greek Row, playing the national anthem and blasting fireworks.[13]

instead what they got was boos and chants of 'lock him up!'

imagine if he threw out the first pitch... would've been a full on riot.

It's baseball, the great teams with 100+ wins at the end of the day also lose around 60 games. That's only a 62% winning percentage. It's not like the NBA where the great teams usually win 75-80% of their games.

To be fair they pulled him after the home run and then a walk. He got hosed on that 2-1 pitch to Soto though.

I still would have left him in but hindsight is 20/20
