Nostalgia is a disease

Most people grow out of it, a few dont

The ones that don't continually reflect back to when their life didn't suck, that's why they hold onto and protect that period of their life so much.

We call this the "Kids get off my lawn" syndrome.

Im gonna try to give you a serious answer explained in a way that isnt insulting but my natural tone is a bit condescending so bear with me....

If you go to a classical music forum....do you expect to see posts about Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven dont you? All long dead....but obvious people to discuss among people with a passion for the genre. There are many great living composers...but people are gonna talk the all timers. Those who shaped all modern versions of their music and remain the biggest names historically. In fact...lets take this out of the hypothetical and find a real classical music forum....

First one on google...

https://www.talkclassical.com/classical-music-discussion/

Lets see some topics....

Nietzsche on Beethoven

Is Beethoven over-hyped?

Reverse question: How could great music of the past be so beautiful?
^
That one is pretty much asking how are the past composers better than today....which we can relate to in basketball.

Beethoven Vs. Mozart

Read through it. Even the topics on modern guys are just comparing them to people long dead.

They are pretty much making the same topics we are:

Most Overrated

a. Mozart

b. Tchaikovsky

c. Mahler

d. Liszt

e. Philip Glass

f. John Cage

g. Stravinsky

Most Underrated

a. Monteverdi

b. Schubert

c. Handel

d. Schoenberg

e. Debussy

Mozart created some of the most beautiful and memorable music in Classical era. I just don't understand the adulation he received today. Tchaikovsky, in my opinion, is very competent composer, but his music doesn't ''do'' me. Same to Mahler' symphonies.

On, the other hand, we can argue that Schubert is as popular as ever, but there are some, who think that he's only a ''gifted amatuer'' (that's bs, btw). Monteverdi's contribution to opera was often overlooked, while Schoenberg's twelve-tone system continues to baffle listeners..

I am tempted to include LvB in the overrated, but I don't wanna die..

It's important to distinguish between ''overrated'' and ''underappreciated''.

What's in your list?

Assuming none of these people are 220 years old....it isnt nostalgia making them bring up the greats. The issue with modern vs all timers no matter the discussion is that comparisons are inevitable because you need a reference point to explain just HOW great what you are dealing with is. And the comparison issues brings us to body of work...

No matter how great a composer or athlete is....when you talk about him being your favorite ever and try to defend that...you run into the unfinished catalog issue. How do you compare a 24 year old composer with one or two great compositions to Bach who has over 1,000? The young _____ fan would get clowned by classical fans because while his two things may be great....Bach has literally 700 great ones.

In sports...no matter what a young player does he doesnt have the career to justify comparison to the greats...but all young fans insist on doing it as does the media who uses it to drive ratings.

So you have some young phenom come along...lets call him Bazyli Wiśniewski.....the Polish Freak for short. He has a great piece of music. Its built into a great show...has a couple great seasons touring. Its fans think its as good as anything ever was...its doing numbers Chopin could only dream of. Half these guys died broke really. And the Polish freak is going platinum. So some classical music fan wants to compare the Polish Freak to the greats. He makes dozens of topics on why hes better than Bach...Mozart....whoever. How would he get around the fact that his guy has been working for a couple years and the others have entire libraries of music as good as or better than his in the eyes of hardcore fans? He wouldnt. He would hear about it every time he tried to bring it up. He couldnt escape the classic symphony count.

You might eventually have a couple Mozart fans go crazy and post too much about him and why hes better than ____ but it wouldnt necessarily be nostalgia.....just that person talking about who hes a fan of just as the Polish Freak fans do. You counter could be that the Polish freak is active and making current news but really....who cares about it? Mozart in his grave is a bigger deal to music fans than the Polish Freak. Thats what comes with greatness. Greatness doesnt die when you do. Greatness is eternal. ANd greatness will always have a better catalog than 20 somethings trying to BECOME great because greatness is already done. Its retired. Its put in decades of work and have accomplishments the youth cant touch.

If youre lucky the Polish Freaks will make 50 years of great music and one day justify comparisons beyond the ear test which nobody can agree on.

But in the short term?

Your guys grew up wanting to be our guys. They took their moves...patterned their games after them.

Using the 84 draft alone which you mentioned...

Its hard to talk about Kobe and Lebron with coming to Jordan....because Jordan is who they themselves spent their whole lives trying to be. Its hard to talk about Embiid without Hakeem....you are watching a guy trying to be Hakeem. In his own words:

“I had this DVD that my coach in Cameroon had mailed to me when I first came to America,” Joel Embiid wrote in his recent piece for The Players’ Tribune. “It was an hour-long tape of Hakeem Olajuwon and some other legendary big men. I probably watched that DVD every single day for three years. I would study the way Hakeem moved, and I would go out and try to imitate him.

“I did it in high school, and I did it at Kansas,” Embiid added.

“I was basically just imagining that I was a good basketball player,” Embiid wrote. “The power of the mind is kind of amazing. I mean, I sucked. But somehow, I convinced myself that I was Hakeem. And I started getting better and better. And then I sort of started killing it.”

And to keep it 84....Embiid started his career with people worried hed be Sam Bowie.

We watch Zion now and those old enough to remember it cant think of better comparisons than the other short explosive combo forwards the best of them being Barkley:

You see Zion.....we see a high jumping less skilled Larry Johnson...because the only way to compare people is to what you have already seen.

The mold breakers who are what nobody has seen...they are who the next few groups get compared to.

You would see less older fans come to tell you why _____ isnt Jordan/Magic/Bird/Hakeem whoever if the younger fans were content to compare their favorites to eachother and leave it at that. But they dont. Human nature and emotion makes young people drag the greats in for comparison....then they get upset when the young peoples lack of accomplishments are used against them. But what do do you expect? Your guys are 28 with 2-3 years of nice shows under their belts. We have Beethoven who did music even non classical fans have actually heard of.

You are gonna hear about that 9th symphony homie and the deaf compositions where his nurse had to carry him to bed after closing it out on the road in Paris when doctors told him not to compose that day.

Your guy might be great. But he isnt Beethoven. If you all would accept that it takes a long time to be that guy and stop bringing his name up with these pretenders....you might hear less about how your guy isnt there yet.

But thats how the media drives discussion.

They know nobody gives a **** about contemporary classical music. The only way to get a buzz is to call a guy the next Mozart so fans come give it a listen. And calling a nobody...Mozart...gets the real fans upset. Which then makes the young fans upset that their guy gets shit on all day in favor of a dead guy. Its a cycle. And the only people who break out of it are the ones great enough to be the ones the next group gets compared to. So....not many. Its hard to get Mozart or Bach status. And till you do....you get clowned by Mozart and Bach fans.

Same thing in every area of discussion. You know the first man on the moon. You dont know the last. He was walking in someone elses foot steps so who gives a ****? We arent gonna remember another astronaut till the first one to walk on Mars. You guys are comparing Jeff Henderson to Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and John Glenn and wondering why you get laughed at.

And for the record...I made the name "Jeff Henderson" up. But you didnt know that. Because you dont give a **** about modern astronauts. They haven't really accomplished enough to remember their names have they?
