the hand has never been part of the ball

just like one cannot place the ball on one's hip, leg or part of body and move with it; the ball has stopped, and it is therefore a carry

its a legit rule but at the same time if you hack a player and the refs hear a slap on the hand they're calling the foul... best to just keep your hands straight up and close out without jumping. or do that verticality thing in the paint

Hand not wrist.

It just means where the hand is on the contour of the ball it is consider an extension to the shape of the ball.

Say when a shot is released the hand is no longer 'part of the ball' and a foul may be called for and contact with the hand.

Ultimately it is the refs subjective decision on such matters. Such as 3 second in the key calls where a referee may deem a player that is in the key more than three seconds not commiting a violation if he shoots immediately.

It is a confusing and slightly silly statement tho.

The hand is NOT part of the ball. If the hand were part of the ball, then they could not enforce rules like traveling, carrying, double dribble, etc.

I agree, it should always be called.

Why don't you just look up the rule?

https://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_12.html

b. Contact initiated by the defensive player guarding a player with the ball is not legal. This contact includes, but is not limited to, forearm, hands, or body check.

EXCEPTIONS:
(1) A defender may apply contact with a forearm to an offensive player with the ball who has his back to the basket below the free throw line extend-ed outside the Lower Defensive Box.

(2) A defender may apply contact with a forearm and/or one hand with a bent elbow to an offensive player in a post-up position with the ball in the Lower Defensive Box.

(3) A defender may apply contact with a forearm to an offensive player with the ball at any time in the Lower Defensive Box. The forearm in the above exceptions is solely for the purpose of main-taining a defensive position.

(4) A defender may position his leg between the legs of an offensive player in a post-up position in the Lower Defensive Box for the purpose of main-taining defensive position. If his foot leaves the floor in an attempt to dis-lodge his opponent, it is a foul immediately.

(5) Incidental contact with the hand against an offensive player shall be ignored if it does not affect the player's speed, quickness, balance and/or rhythm.

Well... since you decided to make it about agendas and derail real basketball discussion:

Yeah because the refs consistently use the rulebook :oldlol:

What does that have to do with the 'hand is part of the ball' discussion? I stayed on topic, you didn't. Damn. Sad.

its hard to take this sentence at face value

it depends on the context of the hand/ball

for example, this is clearly a foul:

commentator (forgot his name right now) obviously wrong when saying "hand is part of it" lol, because he didnt get the block on the hand from behind, but straight up slapped wrist/hand

It should never be called in my opinion if you touch anything above the wrist on the BALL HAND.

Basketball is a man's game. Y'all are way too soft. You can't even play defense with half these rules.

I always reference this in the park when i smack someones hand which is on the ball.

Clean block.
