1990. Barkley*
1991. Jordan
1992. Jordan
1993. Barkley
1994. Hakeem
1995. Robinson
1996. Jordan
1997. Malone
1998. Jordan
1999. Malone

*note that I refuse to acknowledge Magic as the 1990 MVP given the established fact of intentionally biased and collusive judging that year

Here's mine:

1991 Jordan
1992 Jordan
1994 Hakeem
1990 Barkley
1993 Barkley
1996 Jordan
1995 Robinson

If anything, Jordan has a stronger case for MVP in '90 than Barkley does

Yeah I would have given the 1990 MVP to Jordan, Magic had several MVP caliber seasons but 87 was the only one I would have given to him personally

Anyway,

91 MJ
92 MJ
96 MJ
94 Hakeem
90 Magic
98 MJ
92 Barkley
95 Robinson
97 Malone
99 Malone

MJ probably should have won all the MVPs besides 94 and 95 for obvious reasons but 90 and 93 were reasonable given the seasons Magic and Barkley had, but Malone :facepalm

99 had to have an MVP, trash season overall due to lockout

Tier 1: MVP + Champs

1) Jordan 1991 - Finals MVP
2) Jordan 1992 - Finals MVP
3) Hakeem 1994 - Finals MVP
4) Jordan 1996 - Finals MVP
5) Jordan 1998 - Finals MVP

Tier 2: MVP + Finals Appearance

6) Barkley 1993
7) Malone 1997

Tier 3: MVP + Conference Finals Appearance

8) David Robinson 1995

Tier 4: MVP + Semis Appearance

9) Malone 1999

Tier 5: MVP + First Round Loser

10) Magic 1990

72-10
04-01-2019, 03:57 AM
91 MJ
92 MJ
96 MJ
94 Hakeem

Anyone who doesn't think these are the top 4 would have to be a nut.

98 MJ, while not a "shell of his former self", was far from what he had been previously, what with his jumper not falling as much as in years past, but it certainly wasn't a lifetime achievement award, he earned it. Malone's were the most "lifetime achievement" like.

Mix the 80s with the 90s and then it can be interesting

If all of these seasons were had at once by different people I suspect 96 MJ wins the MVP followed by 92 MJ.

This is still an insanely flawed way of ranking. For example having '99 Malone anything but dead last is a joke

Those saying that Jordan should have won the 1990 MVP... maybe so. I certainly wouldn't argue against him being the best player.

BUT.. Barkley won the Sporting News MVP that year as well as by far the most 1st place votes in the official award. I would say there was some consensus that he was the true MVP.

91 MJ
92 MJ
96 MJ
94 Hakeem

1993 Barkley was a superior player to 1996 Jordan.

Statistically...

Regular season

26 / 12 / 5 / 1.6 / 1.0 / 55%efg

Vs

30 / 7 / 4 / 2.2 / 0.5 / 53%efg

Playoffs

27 / 14 / 4 / 1.6 / 1.0 / 49%efg

Vs

31 / 5 / 4 / 1.8 / 0.3 / 49%efg

(Note Jordan's efficiency is enhanced by the shortened 3pt line)

And from a team performance perspective also, Barkley's impact was exceptional.

The Suns went 61-15 with Barkley playing, with no All-NBA team mates and despite KJ missing half the season. They went 1-5 without Barkley.

The Bulls obviously went 72-10. But with Pippen being All-NBA 1st and All-D 1st team, Rodman being All-D 1st team and Kukoc being 6MOY, Jordan had way may help than Chuck.

The only reason Jordan ended up with a ring and fmvp, while Barkley didn't, is because Jordan faced Kemp and Payton in the finals, while Barkley faced Jordan and Pippen.

1990 Barkley was better than 1993 Barkley, which is why I think the following is the correct top 6.

1991 Jordan
1992 Jordan
1994 Hakeem
1990 Barkley
1993 Barkley
1996 Jordan

Not to mention....Magic Johnson only lost a first round series during his 96 comeback and in 81 when it was a 3 game series they lost 2-1 by a jumper. They lost in the second round in 1990.

Let's, for a moment, ignore OP not recognizing Magic as an MVP (which he did get, so a list with '90 Barkley is invalid, regardless of what your feelings on that MVP race are).
I don't, however, get why '94 Hakeem doesn't get #1 mentions (aside, of course, the fact that he's like 100 times less marketed than Jordan). Not only did he win MVP, but DPOY, as well, becoming the only player along with '88 Jordan to do so. '88 Jordan's regular season is deified for him doing so. In various "player of year" projects/comparisons I've seen in various boards, '88 Jordan beats out '88 Magic because of this combo, despite Magic winning the title and Jordan only getting up to the 2nd round.
Throw in for good measure that Hakeem got at least as far away in the playoffs as anyone in the list with less help than anyone else in this list and obviously got the F.MVP as well, and you get #1 material, not #3 or #4.

Should Jordan have 10 MVPs

Should Jordan have 10 MVPs
89, 90, 97 to the collection? Yes.

But I see arguments for Barkley in 90, and 93.

He should definitely have 8. Possibly 10.
