Of course you do. I think its the
"RKO...out of nowhere" aspect where even when you see it coming....it still feels like it shouldnt have gone down that way. Like here...
There is no way they should have allowed Pippen to block this shot....

If im the other coach im not sure if I chew my guys out for not hustling or just let it go because of the monumental effort needed to get there. Probably chew them out though. Anyway....im gonna talk about some of these while my chicken finishes on the grill......

Unrelated... Kblaze, you're older than I am... am I suffering from nostalgia or were the players of the early 2000s better than modern day players?
I'm looking at the end of that all star game clip that jameer posted, and it's like... damn... I'd take 90% of those players over most of today's players.
I dunno. It's probably just nostalgia.

This Jordan block always got love but they dont usually show the play leading to it. He got blocked by Artest then hustled down to get it back. I feel like the first block makes the second even nicer. That "Cleaning up your mess" aspect. He couldnt let it go.....

Kinda like when rod Strickland jumped in to steal Hakeems pass leading to perhaps the greatest call on a block in history:
https://thumbs.gfycat.com/YearlyQualifiedClingfish-size_restricted.gif
"Hakeem giveth...and Hakeem taketh away" Nice when you get an iconic call to go with the play. Rod shot out of there like a bullet and Hakeem couldnt let him go.

Greater mockery of the game....
Jason Richardson trying a 360 in a 2 point game in the 4th quarter....
Or
Lebrons obvious foul in "blocking" it not being called?
https://thumbs.gfycat.com/ConsiderateTerribleBorer-size_restricted.gif
Both are pretty brutal. It was clearly a foul....but hes clearly a jackass for doing it in that situation.
Is it a wash?
Do the basketball gods just let it slide and dole out no karma to either party?

I think its a combo. Plenty of them are better....but their careers are also over so we have a better idea about their all time standing and significance.
Seeing Harden play Giannis is nice...but in 20 years a Giannis/Harden matchup will be something for people to study as they appreciate two of the GOATS(in their eyes) in their primes doing battle.
The games full of retired legends always seem more special. In 88 you had Magic, Bird, Jordan, Hakeem, Kareem, Isiah Thomas, Barkley, and Malone....
So you have the best point ever another all time elite one...the best player ever....the best 3 ever.....arguably 2 of the 3 best 4s....arguably the top 2 centers(id say 2 of the top 5ish)...
Its way more significant looking back than people thought it was at the moment.

Josh Smith was the GOAT at this. People would make a big deal when other players did it but Smith did it routinely.

Im not gonna say Josh Smith wasnt a monster on the chasedown but there are a lot of contenders. Guys like Tayshaun or Bobby Jones:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPPB7VPKQXU
have been running own down for 50 years with little fanfare.
I wish footage existed of the Coleman play. Bill Russells title saving block where he supposedly ran about 80 feet to block an otherwise uncontested layup. Ive seen two people who saw it claim its the greatest hustle play they ever saw.
It was recorded. There is footage of that game but defense wasnt usually shown in highlights back then.

Let's list the 2001 All-Stars
-West-
Kidd
Kobe
Webber
Duncan
Shaq
Gary Payton
Kevin Garnett
Karl Malone
Antonio McDyess
David Robinson
Vlade Divac
-East-
Allen Iverson
Tracy McGrady
Vince Carter
Grant Hill
Alonzo Mourning
Ray Allen
Allan Houston
Stephon Marbury
Jerry Stackhouse
Anthony Mason
Glenn Robinson
Latrell Sprewell
Antonio Davis
Dikembe Mutombo
Theo Ratliff
Let me just say... initial reaction... there are no bigs in today's game as good as Shaq, Duncan, & Garnett. That probably has a lot do with my feelings towards the situation. That's not even getting into Webber, Rasheed, Dikembe, & Mourning (well, if he wasn't out because of kidneys anyways...)
2019 has what? Embiid (still young), Jokic, Towns, Griffin, Davis (only legit name besides Embiid)
I mean I don't even think that's a contest... clearly in favor of 2001. 2019 would get eaten the **** alive vs those guys.
The 2019ers get the nod with the perimeter players, but not by nearly as much as the 2001 interior players... it's a lot closer on the perimeter... Durant, Curry, Harden, Giannis (go either way I guess), LeBron(clearly past it), Westbrook... compared to McGrady, Kidd, Kobe, Iverson, Carter, Allen...
I dunno, I think 2001 takes it by quite a wide margin. I don't think it's just nostalgia, though that undoubtedly plays a part.
I guess I just don't see the 2019ers going down high enough collectively all time to surpass my perception of the 2001ers.

Kblaze you literally posted 2 that immediately came to mind when i read the thread title.:lol
The old man Mj block is one of my favorite ever because you could tell he was pissed and that was a "I'll show these mofos" display and it's always cool to see the old dogs show flashes of youth.
**edit just saw the Russell snip in your post
That Lebron block was a foul but it was also message to Jrich from the refs:D
Prince had one of the more iconic ones along with Lebron's in the finals. I wonder if Russell has any? Seems like he'd be capable of them too.
There's another that comes to mind but it will likely turn the thread to mud so I won't be the one to post it.....

The 01 team has like 11 serious serious competitors. The 2019 team?
Who on that squad takes basketball as personally from a competitive point of view as Kobe, Gary Payton, Zo, Kevin Garnett, Karl Malone, AI, or even Mutombo?
https://thumbs.gfycat.com/AlivePerkyAmbushbug-size_restricted.gif
You've got Russell Westbrook....then who? Giannis has some old school in him too I guess. These guys now are......maybe soft isnt the word...but soft.
That 2001 team would have a pretty insane will to win.

Oh yea he ****ed Jerry Wests world up many times:
https://thumbs.gfycat.com/SleepyQueasyDarklingbeetle-size_restricted.gif
Isnt much footage of those times but I swear like 30% of all recorded Russell blocks are him emerging from the shadows to block Jerry West.

I considered him but decided not to mention it for whatever reason.
You know he and Shaq would take that battle dead serious.

LeBron's block on Iguodala is an ultimate example of his PED use.
2 years earlier his athleticism was declining his first year in Cleveland with the HGH ban talk.
Takes random trip to Miami midseason.
Then a 260 pounder in his 30's pulls off a play like that 2 years later:rolleyes:
