View Full Version : Bird >>> Mullin Arguments

So it has been a while since anyone has been able to give me viable evidence for Larry or Chris.
Just wandering if any of the new posters or old timers have any arguments for this?
I mean damn Mullin half cut off of larger was putting up 27/6/5, imagine if he was sober and had Birds team and structure, he'd have had maybe 5 straight MVPs

The only thing Bird has on him is that he is white.

Having better teammates not necessarily makes you a better player, or jacking up your stats.
Your "better" teammates can take away some of your rebounds and assists, maybe playing minutes also.
"Better teammates" could win you some more games, but not increasing your average by default.

Bird had players who could get the ball into him, create their own shots and make the ones Bird would feed to them. He had better rebounders which meant they could take away the giants in the paint leaving Bird to get Westbrook rebounds.
Mully had zero help. His best teammates were like Chris Gatland and Jalen Rose, if he had DJ, Parish, McHale he'd have had Birds legacy.
Remember that game when Bird starting shooting with his left? Loads of players have attested he was jealous at the attention Chris was getting as the greatest shooter the game ever saw.

Bird made it to five finals and was outscored by his OWN teammate in 3 of them so it's tough to rank him.

Yeah, considering that Bird has the same number of championships as Lebron, I do have a hard time deciding who to rank higher.

Probably you are the few that saying, Bird's teammates (Parish, McHale) were making Bird's job easier and making him a better player, a player with better stats.
Don't need to say Bird led the team in scoring and assists
Bird led the team in rebounds, more than Parish, more than McHale
Bird led the team in steals, more than the guard Dennis Johnson
If you want to say Bird's teammates jacked up his stats and made him better... be my guest.

So you're saying having them hurt him
Don't be foolish, having great players with you opens up the game. Bird was a known POS, wouldn't be surprised if he talked down to the black players and made sure he got his first.
When the best player you ever played with was the bucked tooth bastard Jalen Rose your job is obviously more difficult, and dispute that Mullins outplayed Bird everytime they laced up against one another

I said playing with better players is "NOT AUTOMATICALLY" or "BY DEFAULT" to make you a better player and will jack up your stats.
Go check Dream team's stats.. I don't think Jordon or Barkley or even Magic were having a career stats or phenomenal stat line by playing with a team of legends.
They had their shares of playing minutes, they had their fair stats, but having Magic/Stockton as your PG doesn't mean all out of a sudden you will have 20 extra wide open shots in a game. Having Ewing/Admiral/Mailman to box out doesn't mean you will have additional 10 rebounds.
Put Larry Bird or another superstar next to Mullin, does not mean Mullin will score more, have more open shots and he will have more rebounds, steals, etc.
Can't believe you don't understand this concept.
Including the sentence that I highlighted, you are just making up something to discredit Bird.
I see what kind of person you are.

I know you're trolling but whatever.
Bird on that 61 win team outscored, rebounded, assisted, and stole "cornbread"...by a lot.
Outplayed my ass...
I think he was literally the only difference between a team winning 29 and winning 61.
So think about this: he went from taking INDIANA STATE to the NCAA finals...to single-handedly helping an NBA team improve by 32 wins as a rookie...in one year.
So yea

Some dumb @$$ just have an agenda and cherry picking one or two aspects/games/series out of a decade of career to bullshit.
Next time the dumbass may say, if JJ Reddick had better supports he would be as good as Bird.

IT and Dennis said it best decades ago, if Bird were black he'd just be another guy. They never said that about Mullins.
In the 80s I'd take without hesitation Mully, Nique and Worthy above Bird. If Jokic plays another 3 seasons then retired he'd have taken what Bird did, done it better and moved on.
The JJ thing is off, great college player but he has had some of the bet support ever and done nothing with it (tho he is playing great as of late). Mullins had Jalen Rose as his best team mate

Not sure why we're continuously choosing to ignore Tim Hardaway and Mitch Ritchmond. Hell even Marciulionis.
Those teams were stacked offensively.
You know this is actually quite a testament to Bird.. that someone needs to lie blatantly to make a still weak argument that Chris Mullin, a HOFer in 3 different categories, is better than him.

Bird put up 27/10/8 on 49% shooting in that Detroit series when Rodman made that comment. Lets be real, Rodman was butthurt that Bird ripped them a new asshole and how Detroit lost that series in a heartbreaking manner.

Op what are you trying to say? Mullin would be better if he was no.1 option? Or Bird would be Mullin drafted with Mj? I'm trying to find your angle. At face value it's a non discussion. Bird was just better and the main separation you can't get out of the blocks with is Bird Led teams to success. He wasn't ever just a cast memeber like Mullin. 2 different class of player. I'd accept that Mullin was a Parade brand Bird, similar taste, lower quality, cheaper on the shelf.

The Celtics won 29 games the year before Bird got there. They won 61 in his rookie year. I think that is pretty self explanatory.
Comparing him to Mullin is strange. Bird's career averages were 24/10/6. I don't see the comparison.

Bird's left handed game was in february of 86 on the west coast swing. He was using his left hand because he wanted to go at Michael Cooper with the Lakers and show him a few new moves.

He'd never openly admit it was subliminals to Mullins, you know full well he was trying to intimate Chris.

Mullin was a rookie that year, Bird was the best player in the NBA. Mullin averaged 14 pts per game on 46.3% shooting and shot 18.3% for his 3 point %. Yeah, I'm sure that was it LOL.

Mullin is not even in same tier as Bird in terms of talent. Bird was a more polished scorer, better defender, better ball handler, had better court vision and better passer. I would agree that Mullin was probably a better shooter, but he wasnt scoring over defenders with the confidence bird could.
Mullin is highly underrated but he isn't on Bird's level.
