The 1980 Rookie of the year (ROY) was so crazy close I had to take a second look. The numbers are so damn close (crazy close) between Magic and Larry and even though Magic won the chip that year and became the 1st and only rookie to win FMVP, it was Larry Bird who won the ROY. Check it out:
1980 regular season
Lakers: 60 wins
Celtics: 61 wins
A one-win differential. It gets crazier, too.

It was very close. Bird should have won ROY and did. But, Magic was the better player the first year - largely due to the post season. Bird had more skill but Magic had better judgement. Both did a bit of everything. Bird was the better defensive rebounder, Magic the better offensive rebounder. Bird had the better all around game but Magic had more control. Bird was depended upon more than Magic was, and was the leader of his team but Magic could still dictate more aspects of the game. It was a give and take that first year.

Bird was always the better basketball player up until '87 or so. Even then you could argue Bird was better than Magic in '88 as well.
Bird clearly deserved ROY, he turned a 29 win team into a 61 win team, Magic although great, had the best player in the entire league as a teammate at the time.

Rookie Bird was a far better defender and better defensively than Magic ever was for that matter
he has much more impact off the ball too which those numbers dont capture
theres a reason Boston went from 29 wins to 61 with the exact same roster outside of losing 21/8/3 McAdoo and having 11/4/2 Carr.........:oldlol: and from the 19th best offense and 19th best defense to the #2 offense and #4 defense
it wasnt a close race like the false narrative ur attempting to create. Bird won in a landslide
he got 63 1st place votes to Magics 3:oldlol:
Bird even finished #4 in MVP voting (w/ some 1st place votes even) in his rookie year while Magic wasnt even top 10. They werent close as rookies. Bird was far better. Only reason ppl attempt to revise history is b/c of 1 ATG game performance from Magic

Should we really be telling this to them instead of letting them to live their dream?
Close race my ass. Bird won that award by 63-3 against Magic. Really close. Bird couldn't get all of the votes. Bird got some 1st place votes in MVP race even though he wasn't an actual candidate, that MVP race was won by Magic's teammate BTW. And then there's this thread.

And Curry was the 1st unanimous MVP so let's put full 100% stock into the voting :lol

The results were not close. Their real value was a lot closer, though. A 63-3 blowout is what you'd usually expect out of a "future GOAT candidate vs future marginal all-star who just had a good rookie season" type of race.
Allegedly, Magic learnt of this 63-3 result a few hours before the tip off of Finals' Game 6 and got infuriated, responding in the lines of "today you're gonna see who the real ROY is".

Bird rarely outplayed Magic at any stage head to head (college included). Magic played bad once and that's the only time he didn't look noticeably better than Bird in championship play H2H. Magic was clutch way before Bird was. Bird played bad in his first 4 playoffs and you are lying to say otherwise. His scoring in the post season the first four years was not much different than Magic's scoring, but Bird was far less efficient (as he was his whole career). And Magic was the one that could dominate a game without scoring. Plus Magic played out of his position the first four years.

Yes, Magic had Kareem but Bird also had Dave Cowens (8x All-star), Pistol Pete, Cedric CORNBREAD Maxwell (FMVP winner the next year in '81), Tiny Archibald...The Celtics were a very good squad.

So Bird had a bunch of washed up guys that were good in the 70s and Magic had the best player in the league. The Lakers went from 47 wins to 60, the Celtics 29 to 61. STFU.

Celtics also didn't have Pistol Pete in 79, Maxwell was only on his 2nd year in the league, and Tiny Archibald was coming back 1st season after achilles injury. STFU.
