Usually people tend to argue that the younger generations will typically put Lebron as the GOAT as players from the past tend to fade as they are further removed from the present day.

The Athletic did a poll of 30% of all NBA players and the results were interesting - but not close - at least for the top spot.

The players had it as:

1) Jordan at 73%
2) Lebron at 11.9%
3) Kobe at 10.6%
4) Kareem at 1.7%
5) Magic and Iverson tied at 1%

What are your takes on this? Is Lebron really much closer to Kobe in the all-time rankings than he is to Jordan? What's your take on why players often view Kobe on-par or ahead of Lebron yet fans tend to see it otherwise.

I think Lebron going to the west and struggling is actually the best thing for Kobe's legacy and for Lebron obviously not great. He can queit a lot of that next year but if he has another down year or even fails to make the playoffs more people might start coming around to the idea that Kobe is in the mix with Lebron.

That's another thing I thought was weird... they obviously disregard ex legends but still have the reverence for a guy like MJ.

I would have been more interested in seeing them rank a top 5 or 10 and seeing how players like Russell and Kareem and Wilt fit in. They may not have them as GOAT but do they respect their history enough to have them in the top 5? Top 10?

Kareem made his bed when he refused to play nice with the media.

Is it right? No, but it's understandable that the media won't wax poetic about the guy today when some of those media folk are still around or have kids in the business inheriting the grudge.

Jordan understood how to handle the media probably better than any player in the game's history.

I really can't think of an opinion more worthless than an athlete's when it comes to judging a player's entire worth. They don't have a clue. What they believe is almost entirely based on subjective garbage like emotions.

MJ indeed IS the GOAT, fwiw, but the last place I would look towards for some reassurance on that is what an athlete thinks.

I hope you're not saying this helps Jordan's case? The fact that Kobe Bryant had the third most votes is sickening...

And Allen Iverson? :lol :lol

Sports has always been a short memoried what have you done lately. Jordan, like Gretzky, in hockey is the sole exception because he's just such a huge icon. Iverson getting even 1% of the vote as the GOAT is completely laughable. He's top 40 at best.

Then you have guys like Pierce and Ryan Hollins lol

This is the standard response from Bron stans. Such denial. If you switched Bron with MJ's votes, yall would've been ALL OVER the results as FACTS because this is NBA players saying this. Just hold this L and realize, Bron ain't on MJ's level. The better discussion is Bron vs Kobe.

Woah, woah, woah top 40 at best? I think AI is easily top 30. The man had hame. Sounds like hyperbole. Is this hyperbole?

I mean, I think it might be worth looking at why the players voted the way they did but I think it's pretty odd that you would say the most worthless opinion on professional basketball is that of professional basketball players, the only people on planet earth who know what it's like to be in the NBA, to go up against other NBA players etc. You may not agree with what they say but that's pretty wild to say their opinion is worthless when we're all on here debating basketball topics on a daily basis.

I think an NBA players perspective is interesting and has value even if I don't agree. They offer something none of us can.

I agree with you on this, for them to just list one player is just too shallow to make a judgement on their thinking. It would be more interesting in doing a top 10 or 20 list and give points based on the rankings. It would definitely show more credibility and show what credentials give someone a GOAT title (or show the intelligence of the person).

I've been saying for a long time now that the further away LeBron is from his glory days, the worse his legacy will be. There's still some very vocal people riding his nuts; Nick Wright, Shannon Sharpe, Colin Cowherd and retards like Manny98, SpaceJam2, Dray n Klay, And1AllDay and other Wheels alts, all of whom are living in the moment. But fast forward 5 years... they're going to be silent.

Give it another 10-20 years and LeBron will ONLY be remembered as some glorified MJ wannabe that kept LOSING.

That basically is what the real consensus is.

Jordan at no.1 by a huuuuuuuge number.

LeBron/Kobe are basically neck and neck with a few feeling LeBron is better, but not many.

Yup, in 10 years or so, LeBron's number there will drop into only single digits easily. He benefits from recency bias, that number will drop as time goes on.

Just like at one time Magic/Bird were consensus higher ups in rankings like these, now as you can see they barely register, LeBron will go the same way. I'd say the same for Kobe but his fanbase is surprisingly loyal and vocal to him.
