If you let those guys walk you can't sign anyone better anyway because as I said, they're over the cap. It's either eat the money which Gilbert has no issue doing for players or not sign them, they walk, potentially make someone else more competitive in the East and you get to sign people for the vets minimum.

So here's what I gather. Magic quit abruptly because:

1) He didn't have the heart to fire Walton after the final game.
2) He didn't like the league fining him for every comment he made about other teams star players.
3) He didn't have the heart to tell Jeanie in person.

In the short term, free agents may hesitate after the Trainwreck season that has been LeBron James and the Lakers. But in the long term, the Lakers will get better as a result. Magic just made some terrible basketball decisions.
