I have actually. I quit, though. Not because it was hard, but because it sucked ass. I hated the change in style. I recently replayed A link to the Past and it wasn't difficult at all. It was fairly easy, really. Not anymore more difficult than any newer action rpg games. There's also the fact that there are hard games if you actually want to play hard games. I'm playing Hollow Knight right now and that game is much harder than many of those older games.

While this is quite subjective...

As close to objectively speaking as possible... gaming peaked with Quake 3 back in 1999.

There was not a better game before that or after that.

There is nothing else that has literally ever been released that tests your hand eye coordination, reflexes and your cognitive ability... to that extent. Nothing. It doesn't exist.

And arena shooters such as Quake died off because... most people are either stupid, lack the hand eye coordination and or they're casual players. The skill ceiling and skill gap in terms of mastering those games got so incredibly high that the entire genre just died off.

Watch this guy some time...

https://www.twitch.tv/rapha

When he chooses to explain what's happening behind his eyes, it's quite mind blowing how many thoughts he's having ahead of time while also maintaining hand eye coordination and a level head. It's amazing, really.

Quake is the pinnacle of gaming. If you don't agree or don't understand, I'm sorry, but that doesn't mean anything. You're wrong. As I said... this is all subjective, but really looking at it from as close to an objective standpoint as humanly possible... it's Quake... it's always been Quake.

Pro bw players are completing roughly 400 apm. Build this here, make tanks from each of these factories, rally them to the center, make workers, send them to mine, set control groups, send control groups, etc... 6-7 times per second. A single game between pros can last longer than an hour if they play macro styles... so they are maintaining that 400 apm for long stretches unbroken. Managing 5 bases with workers mining, armies of 50-100 units which can only be grouped in 12s, and micromanaging attacks amidst all of this. There is a reason this shit is literally a national sport in South Korea.

I know you're just going to stand your ground... and probably not even watch what I posted. I really hope we can get someone who knows both games to chime in here.

Yeah I have been watching Quake vids since this convo started. It's no comparison. Sorry bud.

All you have to do is consider that there are pro brood war players who make 6 figures for what they do, and practice on teams for 12 hrs/day. Is there a community of Quake III players who do that? Because even if the game itself was more intense (which it is obviously not), the application of skill would still be light years ahead for starcraft because of how much it has been played (and thus developed).

Or you could consider that it is literally 22 years old, and the metagame is still evolving all of the time. That's unreal.

But like I said, I'm pretty positive you'll just stand your ground here. Not quite the type to budge in your black-and-white opinions. I'll just sit back and see if we can get anyone to chime in that has played both.

You're not going to convince me. I'm not going to convince you. Here's my last word on the subject for now, Prometheus.

This is the best way I can "prove" to you that Quake's skill ceiling is higher.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarCraft_in_esports#Top_players_ranked_by_major_t ournament_wins

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuakeCon#Past_results_and_records_in_Duel_Tourname nts

Look at Quake III, Quake 4, Quake Live and Quake Champions... during those individual time frames, it's almost always the same guys winning over and over. There's a reason for that.

And that's just Quakecon... that doesn't even count all of the other events such as IEM and dreamhack winter/summer.

I just asked a quake channel and they said we both need to agree on ignorance.

They say that Starcraft requires more endurance and long term strategy and Quake requires more quick decision making and adaptability.

I can get behind that. And for those reasons I believe it to be Quake, but the consensus over there is that it's rather unknowable, and that the skill ceiling for both game lines have yet to be reached and that it's an apples to orange comparison.

First person shooters are super common in E-sports because for the most part they aren't mainly RNG and based on luck.

Unlike Madden or what not, your quarterback throws a pass and the catch/interception is random number generated on probability. With FPS games, it's basically whoever can point and click the fastest and most precise.

I don't think pro tournament gaming gauges which games are the best, just which games gives credit to players with the most skill, rather than RNG outcomes.

This I can get behind. I mean... sure, the sheer hand-eye coordination, precision and depth perception would be more demanding for Q. What amazes me about bw is the combo of immense knowledge of specific game mechanics (all build orders, micro strategies, etc.) in tandem with the absolutely absurd speed of multitasking required.

I mean seriously, not even for the sake of argument anymore... just watch a fpvod of jaedong or rain or something. It's mind blowing how many tasks they complete so fast.

i was always terrible at it, but when u clutch something like 1v3 on a save round, it feelsgoodman. the combination of team play, reading the map, mind games, etc is pretty hard to not get addicted to. esp when u have a group of guys to play with. pubs can be pretty toxic, and u end up chasing that good game until 3am.

it can be fun when u eventually find ur lvl in the rank system/ladders. when u do plateau though, as far as quickness with the mouse & keyboard, ur brain ends up being five steps ahead of your hands at all times and it gets frustrating. u end up getting raped when u know u could have avoided it if only u were azn. =/quote

that's why i take civ6 > sc.

yeah it's a very humbling game. I love playing it... but it's only fun if my opponent sucks as bad as I do. If I play anyone who is even intermediate at starcraft, I am lunchmeat. It's a helpless feeling.

different lore from 1-3 Greek mythology, the new one is Norse

there's a few cutscenes that touch on characters from the sequels but the gameplay and story is almost all completely fresh.

The skill gap in that game compared to any version of quake is huge.

The only reason why someone would think quake 3’s skill curve is greater is because that’s where they’ve invested most of their time into.

Ironically 2v2 in the first halo has a skill gap that is still being determined.

If you scheme correct you can overload probabalities in your direction. Ie you like throwing go routes and screens, zone will kill you. Crosses and cut backs man will bite. The chess moves made before the action hold heavy dictation.

Yeah I also heard the rumour that Bad Company 3 was going to come out with the new Playstation 5 console.

Just bought BFV so I'm about to find out. I'm sure there are, I like every BF game I've played, even the much maligned BF Hardline. Everyone of those games brings something new to the table, I wish people would stop comparing them or wanting the franchise to keep churning out BF 3 or 4 redux, as most BF fans seem to want. Every game is different and I actually dig that.

where u been? it's pc only, if you're a console gai. it's a team focused fps based on 5v5 rounds of terrorists vs counter terrorists. terrorists need to plant a bomb and hold it down until it blows, or kill the counter terrorists. the counter terrorists defend the two bomb sites.. it's basically the holy grail of competitive gaming. the amount of teamwork and skill makes the game so rewarding, or extremely rage inducing, lol.

ha, nah man. those are all recorded replays - the video editor just decided he wanted it that way. you'd think the guy CAN see through walls with the way he lines 'em up but that's just how the pros play.
