Great article explaining why Pele is the soccer GOAT.
Some great footage there like this one:

That's like showing an embarrassing clip of the G league. A basic weekend league game garners much more viewers than NBA playoff finals. Plenty of CL games crush Superbowl numbers.

LOL at Phelps and Usain Bolt being pretty much the only GOAT's that are more recent. All the other sports have guys that are waiting to be dethroned that won their first victory 20+ years ago.

Well, it's always been between Pele and Maradona.

There are plenty of recent GOAT.

Federer is certainly one of them. Phelps in swimming. Bolt in track. Lin Dan in badminton. Serena also in tennis. I do think Tiger is also considered GOAT by many despite personally I'd still pick Nicklaus. Simone Biles in gymnastics. If we want to include chess, then Magnus Carlsen as well.

Johan Cruiyff should get a mention. Ajax and Barca are still reaping the benefits of the way Cruiyff used to play the game. One of the engineers of modern football.

But Ronaldo nazario is the best player i've ever seen play.

Won his first US open almost 20 years ago.

15 yrs ago ya big dummie

And even that would be recent. But he's literally still playing now.

Sugar Ray Robinson is regarded as the best boxer ever by hardcore fans, Ali is the choice for the casuals. Ken Norton had Ali's number.

Many people feel Maradona is the GOAT, not Pele. Maradona played in tougher leagues and single-handedly won his country a world cup.

You are right about Sugar Ray Robinson. Amost every specialist has him as the GOAT

But most people who are old enough to have seen Maradona and Pele play, claim Pele was better. Some In the article

Take a look at the defenses Pele was going up against. Messi is the better player in absolute terms. Pele is the greatest relative to his era's peers. Messi is MJ. Pele is Bill Russell with Wilt's stats. Depends on your criteria.

Fair post. I can live with that split between better and greatest

And I've mate that same comparisson many times here in ISH. See below

"Pele is Wilt + Russell. Record scoring plus titles. He is the GOAT. Just like Jordan had the stats and titles to back him".

If Wilt had Russell's titles (even less, like 7 or 8), he would be the GOAT IMO.

I'm guessing because the guy's never had to pass back to his defensive player during offensive possessions?
