Jordan had Pippen for his entire career (1-9 prior)
Kobe had Shaq, and then Ariza/Artest
Magic had Kareem
Curry had Draymond
Duncan had DRob/Bowen/Kawhi

And just look at the glorious events taking place in this thread. On one side you have the logical LeBron fam, and on the other side you have the Glorious meltdowns fam. Anytime a great, irrefutable point is brought up it leaves LeBron haters in meltdown shambles. It really is a thing of beauty to watch.
I'll answer the question, since all of the haters are in meltdown mode. He never had the luxury of playing alongside a great defensive player. He truly is the Swiss army knife of the NBA. I can't even imagine how much more dominant he would be on defense if he had someone shouldering the defensive load like Kawhi Leonard or Draymond Green. Especially now that he's towards the end of his career and needs a defensive stopper to shoulder some of the load.

Prime Lebron (Cleveland 2008-2014) was a true swiss army knife.
I've always looked at his teams defensively being built to rebound and play solid positional defense.
Lebron is the eraser. if you play the positional defense, and get beat, he recovers and blocks the shot or steals it. He's a great help defender in the paint and on the perimeter.

Varejao was all-defense (10')
Lebron acquired reigning all-defense Hughes
Lebron acquired reigning all-defense Wade
Zydrunas averaged 2.3 blocks as an all-star
Chandler/McGee were established rim protectors
Shumpert and Bosh are considered good defenders
As usual, lebron played with more good players than MJ did... Heck, Cartwright and Longley averaged 0.5 blocks, versus 1.5 for Shaq in 10'

Anderson Varejao in Cleveland couldn't stay healthy. dude was playing 30-40 games a season. He was a great offensive rebounder and a guy who could switch decently on the perimeter. He's no an anchor. even with his low games played, only had 1 season in Cleveland of more than 1 block per game.
Larry Hughes was a good perimeter defender but we're talking about anchors. O yea, and he couldn't stay healthy consistently during the Cleveland years.
Big Z was an anchor. a 7'3 big with long arms and offensively skilled.
36 year old Chandler could barely play consecutive games without having load management. Tyson of New York and Dallas was an anchor. Mcgee is not an anchor he's a great rim runner but he's not an Anchor.
Bosh was a great switch big and rebounder. Not an anchor. Those Miami years, I'd say lebron and wade were more anchors than Bosh.

anchors, plural.
dude always had elite defenders doing the heavy lifting for him.
ben wallace, varejao, stepdad west in cleveland
wade, battier in miami
didn't have any elite defenders during the homecoming, hence why the cavs were always turrible defensively.
now he has maybe the best pg defender in the business in lonzo.
look at the lakers defensive stats with and without bbb this past season.
Through the first 47 games of the season, the Lakers defense was actually looking really good. Per nba.com, they had a defensive rating of 106.3, which was 6th in the NBA. They were 16th in opponents points per game averaging 111.4 and an overall net rating of 1.1, which was good enough for 14th in NBA, during that time. Now, remember, this is also with LeBron missing over a month due to injury.
Now we get to the Lonzo injury. In the 11 games since Lonzo went out, the Lakers have dropped to dead last in the NBA in opponent PPG giving up an average of 121.6 points per game.
Their defensive rating dropped to 116.8 (27th in the NBA) with an overall +/- of -10. That is bad enough for 2nd to last, in front of only the Phoenix Suns, who currently own the worst record in the NBA.
Not only have these defensive stats gone significantly down but almost every single defensive statistic for the Lakers has taken a hit. Call it a coincidence or whatever excuse you might think of, but the stats speak for themselves.

In 2015, the Cavs' season turned around with the addition of rim protector Mosgov
I also remember talk of Tristan playing great defense in a key series, and Shumpert too
In Miami - Bosh, wade and lebron were all anchors
Btw, How did the Cavs take the 08' Celtics to 7 games with lebron at 26 on 35% for the series?
How did they make the 07' Finals with Lebron averaging 25.8 on 43.4% for the first 3 rounds?
Answer - they were a great defensive team that shut down the 08' Celtics and also everyone in the 07' playoffs.. Coach of the year Mike Brown was a great defensive coach with decorated defenders like Varejao, Hughes, and Lebron, along with tough interior players like Gooden and Zydrunas
.

People forget the Cavs were a very good defensive team under MB, and that was when LeBron was below average defensively early in his career. They had a good number of interior and perimater defenders and they worked really well as a unit. That said, individually, Wade and Battier were the best defenders Lebron had.
Smoke117

Don't forget Horace Grant. He was one of the best defensive players at the PF position during the 90s.

Many guys were including lebron himself..
But the only "anchors" are centers, and lebron had WAY better rim protecting centers than MJ - Cartwright and Longley averaged 0.5 blocks, compared to 1.5+ for Mosgov, Zydrunas, and Shaq, with Chandler/McGee being better shot- blockers than MJ ever had

Curry, Lebron, Kyrie, Durant, MJ - nearly all players lose in their first couple years - MJ's early losses shouldn't get knocked any more than anyone else's
Otoh, Westbrook and lebron are having their 3rd missed playoffs or 1st round exit far into their careers - THAT should be knocked, and is being knocked - both lebron and Westbrook are being knocked

the boshosaurus' pick n roll defense was some of the best in the league for a big. probably only kg was better during the early part of the decade.
now look at the cavs defense during the homecoming or the lakers w/o lonzo to see how mr. 1-5's team defenses fare w/ no anchors.

Jordan had the quality over quantity, though.
Nah, you're just forgetting that mj HIMSELF was a kawhi
That's a big chunk of the quality you speak of
Varejao, Bosh, Mosgov, and Battier were equal or better than Horace
And Wade, Hughes, Zydrunas, Tristan, Crowder, Shumpert, Chandler, and McGee easily offset Pippen...
Or Mike Brown, who was a great defensive coach (defense is how the Cavs took the 08' Celtics 7 games despite lebron's 26 on 35%.. and ditto on making the 07' Finals despite lebron's 25.8 on 43.4 thru the first 3 rounds).

LOL......
Those Bulls teams were relatively healthy enough that that the metrics speak for themselves.
This narrative that Jordan had much less help should step. When he needed guys to step up, they physically were available to play and play hard.
Lebron's teams are always facing injuries and guys who are injury prone. Half the players you guys mentioned defensively played less games which affects cohesion.
These debates always turn into Lebron vs Jordan. One guys role was to attack attack both defensively and offensively.
The other guys role was to quarterback and then attack.

LeBron was such a shitty defender he couldn't even help relieve some of the load like MJ would do with Pippen against good offensive players.
The end result was that Matthew Dellavedova had to be hospitalized for playing such hard defense on Curry. Then again I wasn't expecting much from LeBron, a guy who got shit on by Jason Terry....
MJ never had a teammate hospitalized for playing tough defense on his behalf.

uh...theyre not. Rebounding occurs between offense and defense as its own entity. And defensive rebounding is the weakest measure of rebounding ability since the people boxing out are often more responsible for the stat than the guy who got it.

If the stat ranks bird over pippen defensively, then it's obviously flawed
So bpm is flawed because of the defensive component dbpm that is biased towards defensive rebounders
And MJ leads obpm if you exclude the wizards..
Ultimately, Lebron only leads in stats that are tied to games played (career totals and win shares, vorp)... Otoh, MJ leads the most important per game stat by a wide margin (ppg), and the advanced stats that measure the RATE of production (PER, WS/48), not accumulations based on games played

Who was LeBron's defensive anchor
his era didn't really need one.. it was the start of the perimeter game/stretch 4's and switch/help defense
you only need a defensive anchor for an inside/out system
lebron beat the thunder when ibaka wasn't a threat... the spurs when duncan was no longer a big scorer and the warriors when draymond wasn't a big scorer either and was suspended for a game
if lebron ran into a shaq/hakeem/robinson/duncan/ewing type then maybe that kind of defensive center would be needed. but it was a different game from 2012 onward
i think thats why more and more non centers are winning DPOTY in recent years

Zydrunas 2.5 blk
Mosgov 1.5 blk
Shaq 1.5 blk
Corzine 0.8 blk
Cartwright 0.5 blk
So Lebron had far more defensive anchors
In addition to better rim protection, Lebron also had more good bangers/rebounders than just Horace Grant (Tristan, Gooden, Varejao, Mosgov, Zydrunas, Shaq, Birdman, Haslem, Chandler, Love, Bosh), and better athletic guards than Kerr/Paxson (Shumpert, Chalmers, JR Smith).
To summarize, Lebron had better 1) rim protection/defensive anchors (thread title), 2) more good rebounders 3) better athletic guards, and 4) more guys with all-defense experience (aka Battier/Wade/Varejao/Hughes versus Pip/Grant/Rodman for MJ).. These 4 reasons explain why his teams ranked equal or higher defensively than MJ's.

the defensive anchors are the 2nd options. If you want your team to succeed, then have your 1st option take as less of responsibility as possible. You dont want to burden him that much because there are 5 players on the court. And thats why lebron is the defensive anchor because hes the 2nd option masquerading as 1st option.

I can't believe I'm seeing people post block stats like thats a good measure of a defender. McGee gets plenty of blocks but he's an atrocious defender because he's constantly out of position. Sells out for blocks and hurts team defense because of it. Blocks are a bad way of measuring who's a defensive anchor.
By the way, that comment shouldn't be interpreted to mean James doesn't have excellent defensive help (Davis and surprisingly a resurgent Howard) this season.

I have Bird #2 all-time
He was savvy, all-nba defender that averaged 2 steals, and therefore a 2-way assassin and versatile scorer - those are the best player types that result in maximization of teammates/brand/team ceiling, and that's why MJ, Bird, and Kobe are #1, 2, and 3 all-time..
The goat physical bigs are next (Wilt/Shaq), with the bird-feeders (magic) next in line ahead of the bird-fed (Kareem/Russell)… The team-hoppers/super-team seekers are next and round out the top 11 (Lebron/KD).. However, I stick Duncan ahead of Kareem/Russell because he was less bird-fed, aka didn't need great perimeter players to have great teams (and his carry-job in 03' was Jordan-esque).
But again, the defensive advanced stats are weakened because they favor defensive rebounders over actual defense.. Otoh, ortg and obpm are accurate stats as far as raw offensive production/efficiency because all the offensive metrics are covered in those stats.

Lebron's best defensive anchor is recruiting competition to be his teammates to leave a wide open lane to the finals.

Idk usually MJ, Pip, Hakeem, D-Rob, Shaq, Kobe, Wade, Artest, KG, Kawhi, and AD were their teams defensive anchors together. Post Jordan, the standard should be your best player is the guy on both sides of the ball.

You're giving him way too much credit. Lol. Nobody's going to pay someone to post who's so dumb that they end up making the subject they're supposed to prop up look bad.

Ben Wallace 4x Dpoy, Shaq, Dwight Howard 3x Dpoy. Lebron has played with 7x Dpoy winners. These are facts!
