View Full Version : What is the greatest fighting video game of all time?

Game Informer came out with a top 25 fighting games and listed Street Fighter 3 as #1. My friend was upset and said Mortal Kombat set the stage for all these other games to be successful and said Mortal Kombat should be number 1.

I wasn't really into fighting games outside of Tekken 3 (loved that game) but I'm interested to see what ISH thinks is the greatest fighting video game of all time.

Tried finding a link to the rankings, but couldn't find one. If anyone could help out, that'd be great.

I understand that Melee has less combo cheese, more techniques, and a higher skill ceiling... but for me personally, it's ssb64. I would 5-stock any one of you with kirby or pika.

Just any Tekken (T7 right now i guess), its not just another stupid arcade 2D fighter.... that game i think most realistically depicts fighting styles, well the ones i mostly like... like Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do and Taekwondo....

Taekwondo = Baek Doo San and Hwoarang depict the best TKD in gaming history, the stance & everything, the techniques on every moves are true to its origin and their move list is incredibly vast with millions moves from both stances.... super satisfying to mixup & combo with all those flashy kicks, dodge, sidestep, repeat...

Muay Thai = Bruce Irvin depicts the best Muay Thai compared to any other Muay Thai character of other games... techniques are very accurate & brutal and again... huge movelist.... he got ditched in T7, but there is always Josie and Bryan Fury who share much of his style...

Jeet Kune Do = Lee Chaolan and Martial Law.... best depiction of JKD... Martial Law is the best clone of Bruce Lee, ever.... and Lee Chaolan is doing his own JKD move list, more kicking based....

streetfighter 2 turbo. easly. not even close either. people still play it via emulation/mugen mods and have mimicked it a bunch in shows like family guy and every youtube videogame fighting scene

mortal kombat is a better series but they've changed their game so much and evolved to the point where no older game is even worth playing anymore

How did Mortal Kombat set the stage when Street Fighter 2 came a year before?

SF2 is hands down the greatest fighting game because it set the stage for combos to be mixed with special moves.

streetfighter 3 is a superior game but it doesn't have nostalgia because it was an arcade game and only released for the ps2 in japan

I forgot about tekken. Tekken on ps1 and ps2 was the shit

between street fighter and mortal kombat I'll go with mk. arcade, genesis and snes mortal kombat graphics were incredible for their time.

Street Fighter 2 set the stage for vomiting when hit. Most probably never even noticed this.

Never was really into fighting games as I just didn't have anyone to play with. My friends weren't really gamers. If you don't have anyone to play fighting games are just meh. I do play a lot of UFC and have the last 10 years, but that's because my best friend and I play it a lot when we hang out. I remember playing Tekken 3 a lot and loving it, but again, I had no one to play with so it got old quick. I was really into those wcw and later the wwf thq wrestling games on n64, though. Even playing by myself I played a shit load of those back in the day.

SF2 is the GOAT. Mortal Kombat would not have existed if it weren't for the popularity of SF2. The intricate joystick and button combos is what took fighting games to a new level. Mastering a fireball in SF1 set the stage up. SF2 was the first scene. SF was the pinnacle.

GREATEST as in "most popular" or "your personal favorite?"

personal favorite is obviously subjective.

but most popular was easily street fighter ii (pick your version, they had many).

i remember there was a comic store around my hood, and there were six game machines. they were ALL street fighter ii. the owner probably made way more money with those machines than selling actual comic books.

My senior year of high school I had lunch followed by study hall which essentially
made it a 1.5 hour lunch. We’d have 20 kids minimum surrounding this game the entire time:

https://youtu.be/-2ak_BjxKZo

Had we a SF2 machine instead it probably would have made enough to pay for the electric bill and some.

Anyone a fan of War Gods? Game held its own.

You talking Wrestlemania 2000 for N64? The black cartridge?

That game was amazing. Used to create my own wrestlers and belts, and have my own federation. It was amazing. Gameplay was great for its time.

Although Wrestelmania 2000 still looks great, what I was referring to is the 1995 Sega Genesis game.

What's funny is that I think I only have watched like 2 hours of WWF/WWE my whole life but enjoyed playing the video games so much.

It's definitely a rip of MK made by the same developer.

For its time I'll go with Street Fighter II CE. Marvel Super Heroes and Marvel Vs Capcom (the original) were pretty good games too.

It's gotten rather comical how entitled gamers of today are compared to gamers of the 90's.

SF2 characters = 8
MK characters = 7

That's all we needed. We mastered all the characters and their moves.
SF2 CE gave us 12 and MK 2 had 12.

Compare that to fighting games that have 50+ characters because current generation isn't patient enough to master the moves of more than just a few characters so they just pick a couple out of the 50+ and never use anyone else. What a waste. :lol
