View Full Version : Greatest FPS game of all time?

Subjective of course but lets discuss first person shooting games...
First got into them in the late 90s all through the 2000s with the Medal of Honor franchise, then got into Call of Duty before getting into my all time fave franchise, Battlefield. My fave so far is Battlefield 3 but I enjoy all of them because they are different. Just got Battlefield V so I'm going jump right in but I've been enjoying the hell out of BF1 right now.
Which games you guys like?

cs, halo, cod 1. SKILL based games without all of the extra fluff.
from a casual standpoint, though? i suppose the entire bf & cod franchises to start. half life & doom were kings for their time.

battlefield 1 will forever be one of my favorite fps games ever. shame that a lot of people have moved on. i can barely find servers on pc to play.
BFV is cool too though, but the scout dynamics have changed. i can still get a lot of headshots but not like BF1. i was unreal, i'd take on an entire squad and have people amusing me of cheating :oldlol:
anyways, best FPS ever overall? probably counterstrike if you're a PC gamer. console? halo though i personally never liked it much.

Counter-strike was the main reason soooo many PC/gaming cafes popped up in my city in the early 2000s. Highschoolers would stampede to them immediately after school got out to get a good spot.
In my adult years, i had a huge love for Overwatch. Bought a decked out gaming PC just for that game.

halo 2 and 3 are waaaaaay better than halo 1
why would they play that trash
Because they understand that the skill curve in halo 1 is so much greater than halo 2 and halo 3. In halo 1, the engine is so much better because it’s projectile and not hit scan.
halo 1 2v2 is the ultimate test of skill 2nd only to counterstrike.
People with high intelligence don’t play games for just their pretty graphics.
A cod player that never played halo can jump into h2 or h3 right now an get some kills. If they jump into a game of h1, they probably aren’t getting more than 2 kills if that.

Look dude, you said Halo was the best FPS in the other thread IIRC, and that's straight up bullshit.
Halo is garbage. First of all, disregarding the game itself, game pads are inherently complete and utter trash for playing FPSs on. Anyone who says that mouse and keyboard isn't the best input for shooters is to be completely disregarded on the subject now and forever. This is not an opinion. It's a fact.
Secondly... Halo is dumbed down for the masses along with a lot of other shooters that have been released post Halo. The reason? Regenerating shields. What kind of lame shit is that?
Do you have any idea how slow Counterstrike and Halo are in terms of gameplay, reflxes, aiming, cognitive ability, etc? lol. This is literally comparing chess to checkers. No, I'm not exaggerating.
You can say you enjoy those games more, and that's fine. But to say that they're "better" is factually incorrect.
Quake is the pinnacle of FPS gaming.
Have you ever even legitimately played a Quake duel? I'm guessing no, because you wouldn't be laughing and wallowing in your ignorance if you had.

Anyone who knows anything about competitive gaming knows that the pros who play/played both games will stay CS:GO has a much higher skill curve than any version of Quake. CS:GO is the GOAT competitive PC shooter and Halo 1 on the original XBOX is the GOAT competitive console shooter. Now Quake may be more "fun" to some players than counter strike, but it will always be the game that requires less skill to play competitively. GTFO with your Quake.

Goldeneye for n64
Haven't played most of the recent ones because I became an adult and got a life after Goldeneye
Multiplayer:
Battlefield 1942
Battlefield 2
Left 4 Dead 1-2
Counter-Strike ca. 1999-2004.
Team Fortress 2
Natural Selection 1-2 (the best, most underrated & most unknown for some reason MP FPS of all time, its only on PC tho, maybe thats why, highly recommend you try NS2, once you get into it you will be stuck for years)
Other FPS MPs were also very good (new ones aswell, ie. Call of Duty, Battlefield 4 and bla bla) but they got boring way QUICK... So much focus on physics/graphics/realism, instead of gameplay.... realism is not fun...
Singleplayer:
Fallout New Vegas
Bioshock
Quake 1
Half-Life 1-2
Medal of Honor
Call of Duty 1-4
Halo

The problem with Destiny is that every time someone found a good gun, Bungie would nerf it because the little fucc bois would complain. I had a Vex Mythoclast and was cleaning house. Fucc bois kept whining about how it's not fair that a weapon obtained in the PVE raid can be used in PVP MP. That was the whole point of the game, to merge the PVP and PVE experience. :lol
If you suck to the point where you can't beat a simple raid, it's time to put the controller down.

The Half Life series including both Portals are probably my favorites.
Might be showing my age but the OG Wolfenstein 3D, and Duke Nukem 3D games consumed much of my youth gaming. Those games (despite limitations) were amazing. All the reboots seemed incredibly lame to me, although the Duke one was kind of funny. :confusedshrug:

Why is the skill curve of quake so inferior to a halo 1 on the console?
I mean look at this....:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTp6KeTTMUc
Now compare that to halo where there's actually more to the game than walking around a map getting weapons and shooting someone. In halo, the physics are such that if you aim in a certain spot, your nade will always land in that spot enabling you to blow actual weapons and power up to various places on the map. Because of this, pro players have to memorize all the nade points to even have a chance at being competitive and they have to know when to throw the nade depending on where they are at on any give map. If someone get's camo and rockets, it's good for 4 kills. Fighting for the power ups is what 2v2 and 1v1 halo is all about.
halonades.com
Then you have the intricate respawn system. In 2v2, your placement on the map as the player who is still alive and not on a reswpan dictates where your teammate will spawn. There are certain locations on the map where if you stand there, it's a random spawn. This completely changes the game as all of the pro players are constantly watching spawns. Fail to random your teammate properly or force spawn him properly, and you will lose. Pro players memorize all the spawns on the maps.
halospawns.com
Then we have the power ups camo and over shield. These respawn either every 1 minute or 2 minutes depending on the map, so all the pro players have these timers which they start as soon as the map loads. When a power up is about to spawn, you may see one nade be thrown from one direction landing near it, someone else baiting it, and another guy searching the common nade from spots hoping to get the drop on the other player.. Your setup prior to power up respawns is critical.
None of the other halos have to deal with all of the above. Only the first 1.
Next you have the weapons. It takes skill to be able to 3 shot someone in the head. Most pros average 5 shots with a pistol to kill someone. The weapon sandbox is perfectly balanced for this game. Best of all, the weapons aren't hit scan, they are projectile so you have to lead your target. The combination of strafing, ducking, jumping along with projectile aiming makes it the ultimate FPS combat scenario as opposed to other games that are hit scan. Much harder to snipe in halo 1 than the rest of the halos.
Next there is the aspect of split screen. You have to be good at not only watching your own screen, but others as well. With everything going on, this can be one of the hardest things to master.
Fall damage.
If you don't crouch when you land from a fall, you take massive damage/die. None of this shit where you can just drop down from anywhere and not take damage.
Portals:
You can sit in a portal and wait for someone to come through and melee them in the back. You can also stand in-front of a portal with a zoomed sniper. These portal games make for some interesting combat situations because sometimes a player will go through the portal backwards anticipating that the other player will be setup for the back wack melee. Or the player may stand on the other side of the portal anticipating that the guy is going to come in backwards and then get the back wack kill.
In a nutshell, the complexity and difficulty of being good at all the above results in a much higher skill curve over over Quake and the rest of the halos in the series. Anyone saying otherwise just hasn't experienced playing halo against good players. It's the 3d chess of competitive console FPS games. Nothing tops it.

All you see is run and gun... the game is so much deeper than that, I don't have time to explain it all.
Look at that video... that's a guy that's got an aimbot and likely wallhacks as well... there are dozens of videos of this sort of thing against Quake pros... and the Quake pros always win.
Because of their aim being better than a literal aimbot? No.
Because they understand positioning, item timing, intuition, in addition to their natural talent for aiming, etc.

I honestly don't even know what to say at this point. At first I thought you were trolling and now it's clear you aren't. lol.
Aside from everything you're saying being a joke, I never said Quake Champions(which is still worlds apart from Halo, lol). I was talking about Quake 1 and Quake 3 (QuakeLive).

None of the Quakes have enough competitive aspects compared to halo for them to them to even be considered as having the same skill curve as halo. Play a game enough and you have a mental clock on when shit is going to re-spawn.

only problem I have with shooter games is that they suck up too much of your time. can burn entire afternoons and evenings sitting on the couch.

Yeah, it's called gaming lol. That's normal.
I guess you've never touched an RPG.

Problem with an RPG is you walk away and you didn’t impact anyone other than your own enjoyment. With a FPS, you got some incel on the other end of the connection that you can dominate and make his gaming experience a living hell. That’s much more fun.
Depends who you ask... and what you want out of gaming.
Single players games are infinitely better if you ask me.

Both have their place but making some lil fucc boi rage quit in a game that he soaks his life into always puts an ear to ear smile on my face.
