Here we go. Sounds like Favors will be back and possibly Rubio as well and Exum obviously isn't going anywhere anytime soon

Tobias Harris, meanwhile, is a native of New York and was intrigued by Philadelphia over the course of this season, dating back to his time with the Clippers. Around the league, executives believe several other teams, such as Memphis, Utah, Dallas and Brooklyn, will also provide competition for Harris.

The Utah front office believes the team is close to being a championship contender. If the Jazz can attract a top tier free agent, that might just be enough to get them there.

They had their guys and it would have cost them Exum. You think SA would have held on to Exum this long? They know when to cut their losses

Lindsey will be forced to make several spot-on choices in a sea of incorrect options

Get the best guys you can that fit. Ricky never fit. Favors hasn't fit since Rudy emerged. Exum sucks. It's not that difficult. Make a list of the guys that make sense around Rudy and Mitchell and go after them.

Like any GM in the NBA (or in any league for that matter), Dennis Lindsey will be tasked with making a long list of some of the most terrible yet all-too-important decisions that will shape the next five-plus years of Utah Jazz basketball.

5 years? 2 at the most. Probably just next year. Will be another year before they get serious about keeping Rudy in town

His first official item of business will come on June 20, the day of the NBA draft where the Jazz will have the 23rd and 53rd overall picks. This will be a walk in the park relative to what comes later in the summer. Sure, there will be some pressure to not draft a non-factor rookie like Grayson Allen tended to be this year outside of a couple of late scoring outbursts. But again, there are worse challenges that await.

Unless they get extremely lucky whoever they draft should have no impact next year on a 50 win team. Should be considered a Star until he proves otherwise

Cut ties with fan favorites in pursuit of title contention or keep the most lovable Jazz team in years intact and embrace playoff mediocrity?

What is lovable about them? Not a whole lot more lovable than the darkest period of Al ball

With that, Utah has officially entered a phase of team building that Jae Crowder acknowledged later in the day is incredibly difficult: Going from good to great, a task he said is much harder than going from bad to good.

It's really hard if you don't even try :rant

Offensively, the Jazz finished the regular season 14th in offensive rating (110.2) and 17th in points per game at 111.7. These mediocre numbers came despite the fact that, according to the subscription-based website Cleaning The Glass, Utah finished fourth in the league in percentage of their shots attempted at the rim and eighth in percentage of their shots as 3-pointers, which are the two most desirable shots.

Other teams will let Ricky, Favors and Exum have those shots all night long. That's over 40 million in those so called desired shots. That is the heart of the problem right there

The Jazz have a team option on Georges Niang, but general manager Dennis Lindsey has already made it clear that the organization will likely chase a strong wing or point guard option despite reaching the playoffs for the third straight season with a 50-32 record.

For the Jazz, free agency is expected to be a much busier time this year than it was in 2018 when Lindsey brought the whole team back from the 2017-2018 campaign save backup Jonas Jerebko. Lindsey knows the team needs to get better. Utah has momentum in trying to attract a top-tier player and a number of the players currently on the roster will be free agents, which should make for an interesting first few days of July regardless of what ends up happening.

He should have known last year. What makes this year so much different? He pretty much already said Favors will be back. They can't do much if he's back

39.8: Projected max salary cap heading into next season -If the Jazz are going to raise their ceiling, they will need to make some changes on the roster, particularly in the field of playmaking. If the Jazz don't pick up Derrick Favors' contract option of $16.9 million and they renounce the rights of Ricky Rubio, with the potential retirement of Kyle Korver, the Jazz could have potential cap space of nearly $40 million. That figure is more likely to be around $25-30 million, which could be just enough to try and lure a big name free agent to Salt Lake City to pair with Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. Names like Kemba Walker and Tobias Harris are among the targets that many believe the Jazz should try to bring in. If the Jazz can create enough cap space and land a big name, fans could very likely still be watching the Jazz on TV this time next season.

The NBA Conference Semifinals have featured a number of former Utah Jazz players putting on a show. Rodney Hood was the savior for the Portland Trail Blazers in their quadruple overtime Game 3 win over the Denver Nuggets. Like any issue, the inputs for the problem are complex. Donovan struggled for a combination of factors: enhanced scouting, his injury from the playoffs, heightened attention and popularity, increased responsibility, incredibly difficult opening schedule, and injuries to Jazz point guards just to name a few. Any normal person can see their production at work dip due to outside factors and Donovan Mitchell had plenty. While I’ve listed all those as potential excuses for his early season dip, he never did.

Injuries to Rubio and Dante were the best things to happen to him. Them and Favors starting are the biggest issues with Mitchell

There’s also the question as to what position Donovan Mitchell will play in the future. With Ricky Rubio most likely on another team this summer, the Utah Jazz have a chance to move Donovan to the point guard position—as if it really matters in today’s NBA. While Donovan may not necessarily be AT the point guard position, he may be initiating the offense more a la a James Harden or Dwyane Wade.

How do you get likely out of many scenarios where Ricky is back? :rant

This has every look of Dennis Lindsey become more of a mentor for Justin Zanik while Zanik takes over the reins from Dennis Lindsey. This is a big move right before what could be an even more pivotal offseason. Dennis Lindsey is able to shape strategy for the franchise as a whole which now is being made even more in his image. He has his protege in Zanik as his General Manager, his choice in coach with Quin Snyder, and his cornerstone players, Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, whom he drafted.

Expecting the Jazz to solve any significant issues with this pick is akin to a pipe dream. Still, there's always hope you're getting a good player, no matter where you pick. And despite this being one of the most top-heavy drafts in recent memory, there are some interesting forwards who might be available in Utah's range.

Shouldn't be expecting to solve any significant issues with any pick right away. Should be considered a Gleaguer until proven otherwise

Grant Williams is interesting for Utah for a lot of the same reasons Hachimra is. The height may scare some off, but he's certainly sturdy enough to handle the weight of NBA bigs. And despite his thicker frame, he possess enough mobility to play small-ball 4, and perhaps even some playmaking 5.

As valiant as the Utah Jazz’s effort has been the past few seasons as they’ve made the playoffs three years running, there’s no denying that they’re in need of changes if they are to get further into the postseason. One of their most pressing issues has undoubtedly been the non-shooting trio in their starting lineup of Ricky Rubio, Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert.

and Exum behind Rubio plus the guys that Snyder loves that play too big of a role and the ones he doesn't that don't play a big enough role

In all reality, Rubio wasn’t playing well and the Jazz were absolutely justified in looking to move him for a much more prolific Mike Conley. And though Rubio said you can’t take it personally, it certainly seems as though he did. When asked about his thoughts of returning to the Jazz, he said the following–

I wouldn't say he wasn't playing well. He was playing like he plays. He just never fit. Never made sense to get him in the first place. They finally had the blueprint of how to build around Rudy and than got Ricky, Hayward left, they let Hill leave, Diaw went to France, Johnson got old and Favors and Hood were put back into the starting lineup

In other words, it’s been quite apparent that Rubio has loved his time with the Jazz, and for good reason as he’s been incredible in the community and has fit well with his teammates despite some inconsistency. Prior to the trade drama, he would have gladly re-signed with the Jazz. Now, though, with Utah likely looking to move on and with him wanting to find a role where he can be a main figure (or a ‘protagonist’ as he called it), it’s far less likely that he’ll be back in Salt Lake City in 2019-20.

good luck finding that role!

One of those decisions is going to revolve around the point guard position. As much as we have all come to love Ricky Rubio and what his high character means for both the team and the community, the writing may be on the wall regarding his time here in Utah.

All? The high character stuff gets old. Lots of guys are. In Utah if they use it they probably just aren't that good at basketball as is the case here. Conley high character

People may have forgotten, but during the summer of 2017, the Utah Jazz were in talks with Houston to try and trade for Patrick Beverley. If the interest is still there, he would be an ideal option as he checks off multiple boxes that they are looking to fill.

don't remember hearing that but unlike Rubio and Exum he'd be a perfect fit. Should be high on their list. Other than Conley he's my guy and they could still have money to get the starting 4 they need

Ya that's kinda of my fear. Overpay for Conley and then when DM hits max, Jazz will be in a bad spot.
Look at a guy like Siakam. 27th pick and is not hitting his stride. Middleton was a 2nd round pick by the Pistons.

I always feel like the Jazz are alway behind the curb and have poor foresight. Signing Big Al to a big contract (at the time), Mo Williams, even if you want to say Rubio. None are bad players, but they are tapped out in terms of developing. They are what they are. Those types of players should only be supplemental and not foundational. Conley will make 35M when DM is on max. Rudy 26M. That is like 90M on 3 players.

Posted by Mr. Moundshroud on May 22, 2019 | 11:36 PM

At least know what you are talking about. Conley's contract ends same time as Gobert and Mitchell's rookie deal. A big reason he makes so much sense. They didn't sign Jefferson or Rubio. Traded for their crappy deals.

After a season in which Korver broke the NBA record shooting 53.6% from 3, the Jazz let Korver walk. In hindsight, that and the Millsap free agency have to be the worst two decisions made by the Front Office in the last decade.

At pick No. 23, the Jazz have selected a total of four players at that spot throughout their history:

Tico Brown (1979)
DeShawn Stevenson (2000)
Kosta Koufos (2008)
Rodney Hood (2014)

3 pretty good players

In 2014, Utah selected wing Rodney Hood with the No. 23 overall pick in the draft. Hood, who is probably the player with the best resume out of the four, spent his first four seasons with the Jazz prior to being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2017-18 campaign. He is currently in his fifth NBA season with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Wouldn't say he has the best resume. Koufos makes more money right now. Stephenson became a starting 3 and D player. Hood at best is a 6th man

For the season, Gobert averaged 15.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 2 assists per game. The points, rebounds and assists numbers were career-highs for the 2013 draft pick. His .669 field goal percentage led the NBA.

According to the Jazz public relations staff, Gobert joins Karl Malone, John Stockton, Adrian Dantley and Deron Williams as the only players in team history to earn multiple All-NBA honors while with the squad.

Gobert is also the first player in the league since Wilt Chamberlain in the 1966-67 season to score at least 1,200 points and pull down at least 1,000 rebounds, according to the Jazz, and is the first player since Artis Gilmore during the 1981-82 season to average over 15 points per game on at least 65 percent shooting while also averaging at least 10 rebounds and at least two blocks per contest.

With Zamora and additional kitchen staff members Ben Maldonado and Bernie Calder fueling Jazz players behind the scenes, Utah was able to reach the playoffs for the third consecutive season with the 16th 50-win season in franchise history. Zamora takes his role so seriously because there is a direct correlation between proper nutrition and on-court performance.

So it's Zamora, Snyder, Lindsey, Mitchell not Gobert?

No team gets to the top without taking risks. And the Jazz will have to veer from their reputed conservative path at some point and take a few chances of their own if they hope to reach the next level.

which is why they are who they are and will continue to be happy to be good not great

[QUOTE]However, chemistry also has a ceiling as the Utah Jazz showed clearly this year. After a spectacular conclusion to the 2017-18 season and due to limited options in free agency during the summer of 2018, the Jazz organization chose to lean towards chemistry and run things back with a nearly identical squad. 23. Utah Jazz: Nickeil Alexander-Walker, W, Virginia Tech. The Jazz could use a playmaker to help out Donovan Mitchell on the offensive end. They have plenty of defense but need some offense to help them get to the next level. Alexander-Walker can play a combo-guard-like role, is a decent shooter and can create a shot for others.

Ekpe Udoh is currently vacationing with family in Nigeria after spending a portion of last week in Istanbul, Turkey checking out EuroLeague action. When the Utah Jazz center returns from the break, he will have a big decision to make on whether or not to return to the NBA or go back overseas. The former EuroLeague champion and Final Four MVP currently has up to four to five multimillion-dollar offers from overseas powerhouses in Spain, Italy and Turkey on the table and will look to reach an agreement in the next week or so, according to a Deseret News source.
