So delicious. But so expensive here in the states. It's ultratropical, it won't even fruit in
south Florida. Had a 15lb case sent to a business associate. $120 + shipping. Ouch

Still takes a backseat to a Cherimoya though

Those are all asian fruits, which is why most ppl don't know about them. Lychees are delicious, go to an Asian Boba shop or Vietnamese restaurant and get a Lychee Fruit Tea/Milk tea. It's probably the sweetest thing you'll ever have.
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81EQADzzMVL._SX355_.jpg

I've seen lychees in Mexican grocers too. I think they grow them commercially down there.

If anyone gets a chance to eat a lychee, try it. It won't blow you away like a Cherimoya or even a mangosteen but they are fantastic especially the varieties with small seeds! Kind of like a big rubbery grape with a floral aftertaste and an easy to peel semi hard shell.

Apples and bananas. You can bake & cook them. You don't need a tool to eat them and they're easily available worldwide.

Mangos, avocados, pineapple, most of the tropical SE asian fruits are great, but you either need tools or they suck as standalone fruit.

You dont need to do all that crap with top tier fiberless mangoes like Keitt and Alphonso, and certainly not with elite tier mangoes grown on a non-commercial basis like sweet tart, coconut cream, and lemon zest. Unfortunately getting Latin American farms to switch out their crappy old school mangoes like Kent, Ataulfo, Tommy Atkins, and Haden, that are highly productive but uncomplex in flavor and full of fiber, is a slow process. Farmers that spent 15+ years getting a tree to full maturity aren't so eager to chop them down and start over.

India and SE Asia has very good mangoes but they are import banned here. Florida however has developed the best mango varieties in the world by far, it's not even close. In the next decade or so, you will see varieties starting to hit the market that will totally blow away anything that's you are typically seeing today. Eating a top tier mango is like diving into a bowl of sherbert.

Well eating a top tier California or Florida mango versus a hot water treated or irradiated Latin American mango is like the difference between a chuck steak and a prime rib eye. Florida and California can't compete with Mexico, Peru and Ecuador on price points, so they have to grow better cultivars for people to justify paying the premium price. Some of the newest mango varieties have a hint of coconut flavor, some really peachy, others have almost a carbonated cola flavor undertone. Simply awesome.

RESPEK!

As for Durian, it is repulsive bro. It tastes like Hungarian goulash. A fruit that tastes like meat and onions....heavy pass.

The perks of growing up in a family fresh market business, was exposed to all kinds of exotic fruits and veggies. Lychees, rambutan, mangosteen...all good stuff.

One exotic fruit that looks amazing but is extremely overhyped though is dragonfruit. Extremely bland, although mixed with other fruits, it will enhance tf out of a smoothie. Very strange, and very expensive.

This is False. Florida and California can easily grow subtropical fruits like mangoes, guavas, lychees and cherimoyas. And even tropical fruit plants like bananas and pineapples. The mangosteen is an ultra tropical tree. It cant take temperatures of below 50 degrees for very long, and even if you can get one to live in the warmest part of Florida, getting it to fruit is near impossible. The only places in the US they will fruit commercially is Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

If you live right on the equator it's still hard to grow these things. They cant take the full sun when they are a young tree, they need to be protected with shade cloth, as an understory tree in a grove of mature trees, or among fast growing shade trees/plants which can be cut down once the mangosteen trees reach larger size.

IDK why I said supermarkets, you're 100% right that they don't produce em commercially in the US to sell to supermarkets...but us small fresh markets and produce stands can get their hands on em locally from Florida.

I live in the part of Florida where 50 degrees is about as cold as it gets, we got mangosteens here. Again, you're right, not for commercial sale purposes, but they are picked and sold at local markets.
