It's a bit of everything I think. Players lacked in a lot of areas, which is completely understandable, knowing we had full time grocery baggers and janitors in our league at that time. You can't really expect those guys, who were really amazing players for their time, to pop out and hit you with tremendous foot work or deadly precision when shooting. Furthermore, the average NBA player was just lacking in height, which is something that's genetics and you can't really fault them for that. I mean, I am 6'2'' and I'd probably be taller than your average center if this were the 90's. It's easy to score when playing midgets.

Soft American Whites have been naturally selected out of the NBA. Back then? Every team had them as starters! :oldlol: DRob is a bitch who'd have a career destroying meltdown midway his rookie season if he had to handle today's media. Aren't there already like 4 of these threads floating around? Why not just keep the chats there instead of making a new thread?
Anyway, defense in the 90s was fine. I'd say defenses today while "smarter" in comparison to the 90s, are less effective. The latest rule changes basically crippled it to the point I don't foresee it being fixed until we get more rule changes to restore defensive impact
Posting little clips of 90s defense, or today's defense, doesn't matter. Anyone who extensively watched both will quickly dismiss those clips for not being reflective of the actual product.
The best defensive era was the early 2000s defense. The game was slowed down so much, rules had to be put in place to open it up. That says all you need to know
IIRC, only 8 or 9 or so defenses in NBA history had a -8.0 rDRTG. The ones that attained that are widely regarded as the best defensive trams in NBA history. 2 of them were from the 90s (92 Knicks, 96 Bulls). The last modern team to have a defense that effective was the 2008 Celtics. Bill Russell's Celtics and IIRC the 04 Spurs and Pistons round out the list (Might have to verify - been a while since I've looked at it)
