View Full Version : most complete 2 way player in nba history. 2003 Kobe or 2019 Kawhi?

both good selections in my book. i'd go with kawhi though

nobody else was perfect at every area of scoring and defending with elite athleticism, prime bodies etc..

either guy could win a dunk contest, three point contest and a skills challenge. then win allstar game MVP the next night while blocking lebron multiple times/forcing him to pass on the last possession to add insult to injury

Hakeem Olajuwon 1993. And weren't you supposed to leave the NBA board forever? David Robinson was also a more complete player than both for numerous seasons himself. Kobe in general never came close to even Kawhi defensively much less Hakeem or Robinson. Picking him as the most complete player is a joke when you have guys like Hakeem and Robinson who were dropping 26-30ppg while being about 100 times more impactful defensively.

That's actually a good and truthful OP if you read it all the way through

But I'd go with Kobe over Kawhi because his scoring edge was actually quite significant:

Only Kobe and MJ averaged over 30 in a Finals where the pace was under 90 - this covers a big sample size going back to 1974 when pace was first tracked

Kobe averaged 32 ppg in 2009 with 87 pace, while MJ averaged 34 ppg in 98' with 82 pace.. and 32 in 97' with 84 pace

So Kobe is literally the 2nd goat scorer, this giving him too big of an advantage in that area over Kawhi

False

MJ averaged 1.1 makes on 3.0 tries in 1990 (37.6%)

He also shot 43% on threes during the 91-93 Finals on 3.3 attempts (24-57)...

But he was only 2-4 in the 1991 Finals - so for just the 92/93 Finals, he was 22-53, or 41% on 4.2 attempts..

Overall, he was 35.2% on threes in the 85-93' playoffs on 2.2 attempts

And it was done during a time when you actually were allowed to play defense.

Back when guys had to dribble up court with their back to the defender because the defense was just that overwhelming due to hand check. :applause:

They only dared him in Game 1 and MJ taught them a lesson with the shrug game - after that, everyone knew better yet he still shot 41% on 4.2 attempts for the 92' and 93' Finals

And guarding Kobe or Kawhi close doesn't hurt you as much as MJ because they aren't as devastating going to the hole

Only MJ has 9 straight seasons of BOTH first team nba and defense

Yeah but his scoring sucks compared to Kobe or MJ:

Only Kobe and MJ averaged over 30 in a Finals where the pace was under 90 - this covers a big sample size going back to 1974 when pace was first tracked

Lebron is nowhere near this - he only averaged 33 when pace was 100 and DRtg was 115.. :facepalm

changing the way your team plays isn't a smart strategy

if anything kobe dialed it back and got others involved more often when it mattered most. he was a decoy in 1st quarters of a lot of playoff games to make shaq or gasol happy so theyed play defense and hustle. kobe knew how to take care of his co stars

kobes point per shot was identical to MJ's... he got to the line and hit enough threes to make up for his immensely difficult shot selection. he did it to demoralize opponents and make them quit defensively so his teammates could take advantage. how many free layups did other guys get cutting to the basket in the triangle after kobe would knock down a few fall away threes

go back and watch the 2010 WCF game 6 between the suns and lakers

he made nash cry for god sakes. the air got sucked out of the building. thats how you make an impact. not by dropping 63 in the playoffs and losing... by hitting 37 with a dozen insane god mode shots and winning

Lebron put up way better numbers vs Orlando than Kobe did that same playoffs.. Kobe had GASOL shooting 60 percent and shutting down DHOWARD while Lebron had Mo Williams shooting 37 percent as his second option.. This just shows you how much better Lebron was in 2009..

Same team except Kobe had the best squad alongside of him.. Marc Jackson commented on TV .. The LAKERS should win they have the best team during

Lebron is an entirely inferior scorer - this results in 3/9 because his lack of scoring versatility (ball-dominator only) doesn't fit with all player types or a good brand of ball, so his teams are worse, 3/9
