View Full Version : Chris Paul doesn't get enough respect defensively

I didn't even know this as I hadn't checked rpm stats in awhile and was looking up someone else...but he led DRPM for ALL guards (pg or sg) this season with a 2.27drpm...at 33. Am I the only one that finds that ridiculous that a barely 6'0" pg 33 year old pg is the best defensive player at the guard position? Even more ridiculous is how little recognition he gets about how good he is on that end. As I said before, what separates him from other star pg's of his generation is his absolute absurd defensive impact. You couple this with his impact offensively and it's no surprise why he's basically been top 1-5 in combined RPM his entire career.

He's also #3 in steals (impressive for his age).
DRPM adjusts the box-score and is useful. But its still a box-score metric.
Harden is #2 in steals for reference...and is a + defender according to DRPM. Not saying he hasn't improved. Just saying though.

pipm is another metric and box score component and he's pretty nice positive there(+1.9). I think he would look good in rapm. Lot of Hou fans give credit to Bzdelik coming to back to their defensive resurgence the 2nd half of the year but that also corresponded with Paul coming back. RAPM can account for context with lineups changing but it cant for a coaching change

I watched this guy closely when he was a Clipper. I swear he had the ability to get a steal anytime he wanted too. He was so good defensively. Screw the defensive numbers, i don't even look at them. I use my eyes.
I still think deep in his DNA, he's got that choking gene in the tightest moments. But 98% of the other time, this guy was/is a beast. A 6'0" guy being this great on both ends is a testament to his greatness.

DRPM is a terrible stat
u cant use box score stats to measure defense
but yes CP is a top 5 defensive PG ever for a reason
only Jrue, Smart and maybe Bev and Conley are better than current Chris defensively

I think it raises an interesting topic, Chris Paul's ball handling skills separates his defender by keeping the ball low after the change of direction, where as Stephen Curry changes the direction of which way he's attacking the basket only due to his inability to not get blocked on pull up jump shots, because he isn't setting up his teammates, but only on attack mode and awaits teammates to be freed up by such tactic.
And Stephen Curry doesn't protect the ball, he's essentially drawing fouls on his drives the way Harden draws fouls on his step back jump shots, and drawing fouls on his jump shots the way Harden is drawing fouls during his drive.
