View Full Version : Players whose Legacies Drastically Dropped after 2018-19 NBA Season

LeBron James - Went from 8 straight finals appearances in the weak East to failing to make the playoffs in the Wild West. Tried and failed to gut entire team for AD. Coach gets fired. GM quits. All in the same trainwreck season.
Russell Westbrook - Booted in the first round Western conference playoffs again. Has done nothing after Durant left. Still averaging triple doubles and threatening to beat people's wives up though.
James Harden - Disappeared in the West playoffs again after a rule abusing "dominant" scoring season. Had a chance to end the Warriors reign but succumbed under playoff pressure.
Chris Paul - Flopped and whined his way to the playoffs only to lose yet again to a Durant-less depth-gutted Warriors team. Battled all season long with refs about being able to develop a relationship with them instead of playing the game the right way.
Kyrie Irving - Failed to get past the 2nd round with the same Celtics roster that went to the Eastern conference finals the prior year. Also showed everyone how much of an emotional trainwreck he is.
Anyone else?

Very accurate.
I'll add
John Wall - not his fault, but unfortunate injuries are piling up for him, which will cause his legacy to drop. Five years from now we may see a video on YouTube titled "Where are they now / What happened to John Wall?"

Lebron's legacy went up. We are only now realizing how incompetent Magic, Pelinka, Jeanie and the rest of management were. Also, the news of how Magic was actually the one behind the AD debacle.
He went up a few spots in the deity hierarchy.

Kyrie probably took the biggest hit. He staked his legacy on being ‘the man’ on a team and failed spectacularly. It’s back to second option for him should he join bron or kd.
There isn’t really any hit on CP3’s legacy that hasn’t already been done. If you wanna say he was a flopper and playoff elimination fodder this year, fine. But that’s basically his whole career.

Forgot about Wall. The difference with him is he's been constantly injured. Even when he wasn't, the Wizards have always underachieved in the playoffs.

I meant disappear as in the James Harden we saw during the regular season disappeared in the playoffs. He shot considerably worse percentages in both the Jazz and Warriors series. In the clutch, he also disappeared when his team needed him.
kyrie's stock fell off a cliff.
lebron's stock went up for that reason. plus nearly carried what was a 17-win under the former leadership to a playoffs berth - too bad he got sabotaged by low-IQ magic and little jeanie and robbie.
jokic going up
giannis and the bucks going up
harden and cp3 unfortunately going way down

Nope.
Lakers last year without LeBron: 35 wins
Lakers this year with LeBron: 37 wins
LeBron added a paltry 2 wins. Get your facts straight boy.
LeBron got exposed. Dude couldn't do better than a 10th seed in the West proving all his doubters all these years right. You can keep pretending it didn't happen but it did. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

Kyrie. Westbrook. CP3 and Harden.
I wouldn't use drastically for either though.
Westbrook and Kyrie took a hit in that they're not who we thought they were. And that'll leave fans with a certain impression going forward.
lebron's stock went up for that reason. plus nearly carried what was a 17-win under the former leadership to a playoffs berth - too bad he got sabotaged by low-IQ magic and little jeanie and robbie.
Most people out here in LA think Lebron's stock fell off a bit.
Ditto w/ the media.
His ardent apologists will point to the Lakers 4th seed. Before injury. LA was still in playoff contention when Lebron returned though. And they dropped winnable games. Bad losses all the same.
His legacy is set in stone. Still a Top 10 player of all-time, give or take.
But missing the playoffs your first year out West? After making 8 straight finals in the East? Its a bad look.

I wouldn't say LeBron's legacy is set in stone yet. Let's not forget he had one of the best playoffs runs last year in the East and people propped him up for that. His stats are even better this year. If he can add to his accomplishments, it's only fair to take away from his legacy if he continues to fail in the West. It'd be another black mark in his legacy.
The difference is he's facing actual competition out West without having a team stacked with all star players like he's been accustomed to thoughout his career. There's really no excuse for him to not even be able to make the playoffs.

If there's no considerable drop-off in stats...
You could be right.
Almost as if people will praise Lebron for falling off a cliff...then playing with great longevity and getting blitzed out West :oldlol:

The team was destined to fall apart after the Davis trade fiasco, which has nothing to do with LeBron.
Again, he only rose up the ranks this year. Year 16 and he dominates the West pre-injury on a circus roster like the Lakers?
If one isnt inhibited in his feelings, they will accurately gauge this positively.

lebron is 34. his legacy, however you view him, is pretty much already set. he is the most polarizing player in the league, and there is probably nothing he can do or cannot do that will change your opinion of him. whether you like him or hate him, you know what he's about, and probably nothing from this point will ever change your view.
the others -- we've seen them in these same exact situations before this season, so it wasn't a grand surprise.
a guy like chris paul has been stuck in this "can't ever win shit" mode for like forever. this is not new. he's just bringing his clippers tradition to the rockets. still a talented point guard though. but he ain't winning shit. and many have viewed him like this for a long time.
same with westbrook and harden. we've seen them with these results in the playoffs before. it's just a repeat of what we've already seen. i didn't bump them up nor take them down. they are basically the same level of players from last year. no change.
i think irving was the only big question mark that was answered in 2018-19, and that answer wasn't very flattering. before, he had the luxury of not having much history to demonstrate the things that he showed the world this season, and they ain't good. i've taken him down a few good notches.

Harden and Paul took the biggest hit this year. Then maybe Kyrie because you add Kyrie and Hayward to the exact same team from last season that went to the ECF and you do worse the whole season? Kind of shows how Kyrie in-particular doesn't fit into a team orientated system.
LeBron's legacy is about the same. Putting out there wanting to trade for Davis is expected. Magic quit because of the ownership's incompetence and not giving him full control. Not because of LeBron. He missed more games this year due to injury than any other time his career. If he missed less they could've made the playoffs./
Westbrook to me is the same. I expect him to hurt the team at the end of games with bad shot selection all the time. He's done it his whole career. George was injury in the playoffs with his shooting shoulder. They couldn't done better if that wasn't the case.

That's because LeBron is somehow your God after winning Cleveland it's only championship.
He is not absolved from judgement just because of that. I warmed up to having him on the team through midseason. I thought he could actually get us to the playoffs at the very least. I gave the guy a fair chance to show us what he was capable of, and he didn't deliver. Instead he went ahead and confirmed everything his protractors have stated.
Awful non-existent defensive effort. Pretty 28/8/7 numbers without winning impact to blind those who don't actually watch Laker games. Threw his teammates under the bus to the media. Tried to trade their entire team for another all star player. Coach gets fired. GM quits.
LeBron can't even deliver this team any better than the 10th seed in the West. That's a black mark on his legacy. You don't go from 8 straight finals then fail to make the playoffs in back to back seasons while still producing elite numbers. There's definitely something wrong there.

Seek help with your anger issues. Why do you get so easily triggered? Did I talk about your boyfriend or something? Can't say I expected much from a LeBron stan. Maybe try and go outside more instead of worshipping a man who could case less about your existence.

You could be right.
Almost as if people will praise Lebron for falling off a cliff...then playing with great longevity and getting blitzed out West :oldlol:
Weird twist of fate, but I could see it happening.
Yup. If it continues to happen, historians will peg his career as the tale of two conferences. Part 1 Cake walking the East then Part 2 getting exposed in the West.

Gotta admit, Kawhi going to the East in his first season and winning the title without two other all-stars that LeBron needed even further drops LeBron's legacy this season.

Did someone hack your account?
But missing the playoffs your first year out West? After making 8 straight finals in the East? Its a bad look.
LeBron missing a third of the season, Ball missing half of it, BI missing a third of the season, and various other injuries. Lets not act like he was healthy, played all 82 games, and then missed the PO's.
The Lakers had a better record against the West compared to the EC teams, you autistic fish seller. :oldlol:
As for the OP, it has to be Brick. Got surpassed by Kawhi and Curry. Dude's gonna get kicked out of the top 20 if Giannis continues his growth.

Give or take means that Lebron is still a top 10 player. Top 3-5 if you want to argue it.
Right now? As in heading into 2019-2020?
You got lists with Lebron outside of the top 5. Peep backpicks. To me? He's still Top 5. Arguably Top 3.

LA dropped winnable games against bad teams. While competing for an 8th seed.

Agreed. Bran missed the playoffs because of health issues. Not his fault. This is also why 2016 is an asterisk ring too.

Dramatically is obviously an exaggeration, but since the playoffs ended the playoffs who have taken a hit
Westbrook, who had with another awful playoff performance
Kyrie ,who had a WOAT level series against the Bucks
Harden & CP3 who both went home with another early playoff exit, this time losing Games 5 & 6 with Durant out
Curry, definitely wouldn't blame him for losing the series due to all the injuries his team had, but he had extremely pedestrian performances in Games 4 & 6, and he frankly missed out on winning what would've been a huge series for his legacy and reputation

Exactly. Injuries aren't an excuse. Every team has them. Plus LeBron missed the last six games when they were already eliminated from the playoffs. Not because he was injured. FO decided to tank. Pathetic Bron stans trying to revise history.
The fact of the matter is, the Lakers were in the hunt for the 8th seed when LeBron activated playoff mode and then they proceeded to go 2-13 in the next 15 games with him in the lineup. Exposed point blank.

They did. A lot of that has to do with inconsistent lineups and players who were playing while being hindered by injuries. :confusedshrug:
Oh, and after LeBron came back, the Lakers were missing Ball, Ingram didn't play since the beginning of March, Kuzma missed time, Hart missed time, Kuzma missed a couple of game, Bullock was inserted into the starting lineup, etc..

I wouldn’t say lebrons stock fell of legacy wise, just wasn’t quite as good as last few yrs and ofc injury will affect some rankings. It’s just extra padding for his career resume(it’s not insignificant a top 10 yr will help career wise), he’s give or take top 3 all time still. Like backpicks thought bron had a down year but also thinks bron is 2nd all time behind Kareem with a good chance at passing him because a 15 year prime is so much value.
A ring would help ofc but it could come as a 2nd guy to ad so like Kareem 85. That’s not legacy altering either. I think next yr is his last yr he could be true mvp lvl but I could be wrong

I have Kawhi and Durant as the best players on the planet followed by a small gap and then Giannis. The rest of the top 6 (Lebron, Harden, Steph) are almost at the same level in my opinion. There isnt much between them.

Man, I was really high on Giannis and Curry, but the PO's were just terrible for them. Giannis is still extremely young, but dude was ridiculously passive in the 4 straight losses in the ECF. Curry flat out choked in the Finals. I mean, even without KD and Klay, the Warriors were still withing striking distance, but Curry was just bad.
Right now, I would rank them:
1. Kawhi (even though dude was invisible in the 4th Q of G6 and his team was elite despite him playing subpar in G1).
2. Giannis
3. Jokic
4. KD/LeBron
5. KD/LeBron

i think curry was fine. Maybe enough to drop him behind kawhi but he seems to be clearly top 5. had a bad shooting series but because he shoots so many 3's and got to the ft line more than usual, still put up like 60ts%. Still opened things up for teammates. Some layups and plenty of wide open 3's. unfortunately for the warriors dray and iggy werent very good this series.
Like the warriors still put up a rortg of 2.9 tht's not that bad(rs was a rortg of 5.5 compared to league average but with durant). The Rs numbers also undersell the raps defense some however, they obviously turned it up once they got gasol. I think backpicks calculated they're the 2nd greatest playoff defense adjusted for era after the 04 pistons.
GS' problem big picture wise was their shitty defense, granted some of that Currys fault. He did miss a great opportunity game 6 however to force it to 7. not a good game so many people who weigh that heavily will dock him, I dont really however.

Green was pretty good in the Finals. Did what was asked of him. 13/11/9/2/1. You can't expect someone like him to score 20 a night.
Iggy is like 40 years old and was HUGE in G6. Gave Curry the help he needed and then some more.
The Warriors outside Curry shot 53% from the field and 40% from deep. Dude was just horrific in that game. Right now, he's definitely not better than Giannis and Kawhi. The rest are arguable, I guess. Also, if it's the PO's, I'd pick LeBron 10/10 over Curry even right now.

Nah, WB took L's in these past two Playoffs but you can't give him shit for the 2017 season, his team let down down in multiple games against Houston when they blew 8-point leads within a minute of him resting on the bench.
He's fallen off these past two years but 2017 Westbrook was a monster.
