New Lakers coach will be Frank Vogel, with Jason Kidd as assistant

Former Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel has emerged as the front-runner to be offered the Los Angeles Lakers' head-coaching job, league sources told ESPN.

The Lakers are planning to pair Jason Kidd with Vogel as an assistant coach, league sources said.

Vogel's emerging candidacy speaks to the significant influence of Lakers adviser Kurt Rambis and former coach Phil Jackson, whose opinions weigh heavily with owner Jeanie Buss. Vogel was the runner-up to Jeff Hornacek when Jackson hired a New York Knicks replacement for Derek Fisher in the summer of 2016.

I like that idea! I would be interested in knowing who else would be on the coaching staff. Maybe Mike Woodson or Tom Thibodeau (sp). JB bickerstaff would be good assistant coach, perhaps bring in LeBron's buddy Juwan Howard to keep LeBron happy.

Vogel + Kidd is solid. Not amazing and not terrible but a decent move by the front office.


At this point we really need to see who they can land in the offseason as far as players go.

We need to also see who the other assistant coaches are. Luke didn't have very good assistant coaches so we need to do better there.

The fact that the Magic made the playoffs this year was a fluke. Vucevic played his best year due to it being a contract year (his last big contract) and adding young players like Mo Bamba. Birch, and Grant to get their defense better.


I'm not saying Vogel is an AMAZING coach, but let's not act the Pacers were not a good team under him. The only season they missed the playoffs was when Paul George got injured, and even then they almost made it.
