View Full Version : 1st option rings define a player's career - will we ever see another player get 6?

No way it ever happens again, since no player ever gotten more than 3
so 6 is a complete aberration - only the unquestioned goat gets that much

From 2001 to 2009, 5 weak teams made the Finals - AI (01'), Kidd (02/03), Lebron (07'), and Dwight (09') - all 5 teams were destroyed in the Finals
Why does this matter?.. Because the 00's East is the only time in history when a bunch of weak teams made the Finals and got crushed - only lebron played in a conference where weak teams made the Finals.. :confusedshrug:

MJ played two years and failed to make the playoffs in that "weak" East.

There are 13 players with 6 or more rings
There is 1 player with 6900 points

Why did MJ have a losing season for five years
3ball

Why did MJ have a losing season for five years
- He didn't enter the league with a 2-time all-star center on his team
- Nor did he get the NBA steals leader and all-defender added to his team (hughes), and a 2nd all-defender (varejao)
- Or 2nd and 3rd all-stars (Mo and Jamison), or the reigning all-star MVP (Shaq)
MJ got none of that - the 85-89 Bulls had ZERO accolades, while lebron's teams had 6 decorated players (4 guys with all-star experience and 2 all-defenders)

You have to 3-peat to do that ...
And be considered the goat already like MJ was... :pimp:
^^^ People seem to forget these things... And btw, those 2 years only allowed everyone to catch up a little - they HURT mj's rings/accolades, not helped
MJ 3-peated while being first option of the LEAGUE - either scoring title...... or regular season and Finals MVP (not just Finals)
So only MJ was on this kind of individual level, while also winning (team level)..
72 wins and title (goat team achievement) + MVP/FMVP/All-Star MVP/scoring title/1st Team Defense (goat individual achievement) = GOAT
.

Unless someone can 3 peat, leave the league and play another sport, and then come back and 3 peat again on the same team, one has to ask if they are even worth watching in the first place. The bar was set so high it's like watching a guy with no legs try to hit a pinata that's 10 feet in the air.

Not true because then someone would have the same accomplishment as MJ
But no one else is over 3, so only half of jordan - THAT'S why I tear others down - because they're vastly inferior

if you can't counter with Durant, lebron, Kobe, magic, Duncan, etc, you lose
Your counter is that 9 ppg and 6th option Russell has 11 rings?.. So I win - because Russell isn't a 1st option, nor is he a good counter..
And again, if you can't counter with Durant, lebron, Kobe, magic, Duncan, etc, you lose
Those are basically Ben Wallace rings
You think a player from the 60's, when there were only 8 teams and severe impediments to blacks being scouted and in the league, is goat??
Again, I win, because you don't even stan Russell or think he's better than lebron
Meltdown.
MJ has no argument over Russell.

No because the NBA isn't as watered-down as it was back then
It's funny because when AI's Sixers made the Finals, we all knew they would get smashed by the Lakers
Ditto Kidd's Nets
Ditto Lebron's Cavs
Ditto Dwight's Magic
We knew these were weak teams heading into the Finals and sure enough - they all got destroyed - it's the only time in history that a bunch of weak teams made the Finals and got smashed
But even though a good team wasn't needed to make the Finals, lebron couldn't make it in 09 and 10, so he stacked the deck from 11-18' to ensure Finals runs in the weak conference
Pretty ****in.g unfair

It should obviously be renamed after MJ since he redefined what greatness was (1st option rings) - that's all any player wants nowadays - a player is nothing without a 1st option ring
And he's the only guy to win titles as the scoring champ (6 times).. edit: Kareem and Shaq did it once each in their peak seasons of 71' and 00'

He was the team's leading scorer in 3 Finals wins, otherwise he was 4th, 5th option etc for 5 other Finals - 8.5 ppg for one, 15.5 for another

It has always been the best player. Same goes to those mentioned above. Durant may lead GS in FGA, but everyone knows it's Curry team.

are we talking 1st option or leading scorer
because tom heinson was his teams #1 option/leader in FGA's for 6 championships ( twice being edged out in PPG by 1 or so )

No I'm saying the term 1st options rings is pretty stupid because it ignores overall impact. Why not say most rings as the best player? Because there's been several times where the team's best player was not the high scorer. Most instances it's true but not in every example. So again why not say rings as the best player?
because it puts someone else above your obsession.
Saying 1st option then ignores things like defense and coaching. Russell won 11 rings as his teams best player and if you want to argue any of the later ones......he also coached 2 titles while playing. Thats beyond anything Mj can touch.
Alot of people said Lebron was coaching the Cavs in 2016 when he got Blatt fired.......until it backfired and he won the chip.
So he ends up looking like he:
1)led
2) coached
3) gm'ed
the Cavs to a title in 2016 according to the detractors. Mj can't touch that either. He gm'ed and coached the wizrads to the sidelines come june.

MJ has the most rings after quitting the league in his prime for 2yrs, then coming back.... 3
LeBron and MJ both have 3 true rings...... quitter rings don't count.
