I started reading it a little because my cousin sent it to me. Never read into it much. And so the first page was filled with how God just magically made all these oceans and rivers. And light and dark... and then talks about the tree of knowledge. And Adam names all the birds in the sky.

most people do not take the bible literally.

That's just a thing with fundamentalist groups mostly in north america.

The Old Testament that you are referring to is taken from spoken word tradition over 8,000 years ago. The people that were told these stories were barely above the chimpanzee on the evolutionary scale. Thus the simplistic creation story and the harsh laws. They (the Hebrew hierarchy) were mainly concerned with keeping order and keeping the tribes of Israel from killing each other.
