Why do some guys won't defend in basketball?

This might be NBA related although I'm talking more about outside the NBA.

In my rec games, we have this guy who when defending people, will give him 2 feet of space before lazily move forward and don't even put up his hand.

We have another guy who can leap very high and would get plenty of rebounds but won't challenge shots when a guard slips by. He could be a decent rim protector/help defender but just won't do it.

I mean, it's not lack of motivation since they seem to be very motivated on offense and are fighting for rebounds

I assume it's because most people aren't great shooters so they are likely to miss and you get the rebound. Just gotta defend around the basket.

i dont think leaping high has much to do with defense... IQ, general length, and willpower have more to do with it. look at tim duncan.

Because defenders dont get the big bucks. Everyone wants to be curry, harden, tmac, etc. I damn near shot up my church last weekend because the pastor didnt know who McConnell was.

If one of my teammates hits a deep unassisted 3 to conserve all our energy on that possession, you bet your ass we are all playing D in their next drive because they are also rested.

Because they are flat footed. I seen dudes incapable of staying in front of anyone :lol I'm pretty good perimeter defensively so I will get up in someone's face especially if I know they can shoot. A lot of times people will back up because they are lazy or just not interested in defense. For instance, I am a shooter and I look forward to playing against certain dudes at my park because I know I'll be open all game :pimp:
