After Kobe threw Shaq under the bus as a player and a person, I disliked him for a while. But eventually I realized that this was counterproductive, that Kobe was a special and unique player and that I was doing myself no favors by letting my dislike get in the way of appreciating that.

Aesthetically I don't love his type of game, favoring difficult mid-range jumpshots rather than looking to get teammates involved. But I can't deny that he was an absolute master at it, and the way he made a contested fadeaway almost as automatic as a layup was pretty awesome to behold.

I feel bad for those who are so consumed by their hatred that they miss out on appreciating these great athletes' games while they're still around.
